It’s clear how we can land Dwight Howard but…

How can we keep him? He doesn’t want to sign an extension. Orlando wants a lot and he is willing to play with Dallas and Dirk when he is a FA. We would have to trade Smith/Horford plus 2011 ATL 1st to land Dwight/Turk which will kill our talent pool and he can leave us for broke in 2012. Here is what we can do to keep him.
Hawks:

Teague/Hinrich/Arenas
JJ/Stack
Marvin/T-Mac
Turk/Radman/Rolle
Howard/Zaza/Collins/Kito

This roster here will be Dwight’s first and last season with the Hawks as well as the lost of two top 15-30 players in Horford and Smith. This would be one of the worst deals in NBA history, much worse than when we traded Bill Russell who is basically Dwight’s game is model after. So clearly Atlanta would need to make a move. With Jefferson being on the market for expiring and a backup center, we could trade Hinrich and Zaza for Al Jefferson. That would give us.

Teague/ Arenas
JJ/Stack
Marvin/T-Mac
Al Jefferson/Turk/Radman/Rolle
Howard/ Collins/Kito

That would make us the best team in the NBA by far. The inside/outside game is one of the best in the NBA and we have one of the deepest benches in the NBA.

Now look at Orlando
Jameer/Duhon
J-Rich/Redick
Smoove/Q
Horford/Anderson
Big Baby Davis/Orton

This team is actually pretty good. Can compete with Orlando with Dwight but they still need something major and that something is a PG. If they trade Jameer and G. Pruitt as well as (two 1st rounders ATL/ORL) for S. Nash.  Use the TPE from the Gortat deal to land J. Childress

That gives them:
Nash/Duhon
J-Rich/Redick
Smoove/Childress
Horford/Anderson
Davis/Orton

This would be one of the best teams in the East and could win the East or at least be as good as New York Knicks.

This would help both teams.

So in other words, we can land Dwight and actually keep him as well as help Orlando at the same time. But as it stands with our roster, if we trade Smith/Horford for Dwight/Turk, we will lose him.

The competition for Howard is Boston, LAL, Chicago, NJN
Chicago- Noah, Deng, Gibson and 1st picks
Boston- Rondo and KG
LAL- Bynum and Gasol
NJN- Lopez and pick, could be Nene and Lopez though.

I would bet that Atlanta will land him for one reason. They never have any luck and even with this deal, they still might end up unlucky.

I really don't believe we will get Dwight Howard. Forget the pieces, ASG is just a failure in terms of trades and if they did, that's when the work truly starts. We will see.
