26) Atlanta (28)

Between a pair of losses to Indiana, Hawks put together a couple of intriguing wins over Toronto and San Antonio for what could be the team's most successful week all season.

PACERS GETTING THE POINT (1-20-04).

The Hawks and Blazers don't appear any closer to firming up a swap of Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Chris Crawford for Rashweed Wallace. My feeling is, Portland is delaying things a tinge in hopes the Mavericks come across with Antoine Walker (and more) vs. Antawn Jamison, Tony Delk and Eduardo Najera.

At any rate, sources say agent Bill Strickland is trying to involve the Knicks or Cavaliers in a three-way deal with the Blazers/Hawks. Supposedly those are the only two teams Wallace will commit to long-term; he loves the idea of playing in New York or with LeBron James.

Certainly that should get the Cavs' attention. I've been alerted all along they'd be interested if they knew positively Wallace would re-sign with them. Clearly, the Knicks don't have sufficient resources to compensate the Blazers and/or the Hawks, while the Cavs boast Zydrunas Ilgauskas.

Of course, the Hawks already have a center, Theo Ratliff. At the same time, the game plan of the new owners is to dump salary not exchange it for the same amount and number of years. In other words, simply switching Shareef for Rasheed makes much more sense.

Press release of the day comes from the Atlanta Hawks...

TRAVIS HANSEN UPDATE
SPECIAL ATTENTION: Chicago Bulls
Hawks guard/forward Travis Hansen will not be in uniform for Wednesday's game against Chicago, as the team evaluates the condition of his right foot. The injury, which kept him out of yesterday's game against Indiana, is being called a right foot irritation. Hansen had an MRI yesterday evening, which revealed no damage to his foot, but he will have a bone scan on Wednesday as the team's medical staff seeks to find out the source of his discomfort.

A "right foot irritation?" Hopefully Dr. Doolittle will find the source of his discomfort tomorrow.

28. Atlanta Hawks (Last week #28) - Was the victory over the Spurs last Tuesday a mirage or did it really happen? It will forever remain a mystery considering the fact that there wasn't a single fan in attendance to bear witness to the unexpected triumph.

THE DAILY (1-20-04).
http://www.hoopsworld.com/article_6870.shtml

Atlanta Hawks - After leading the Indiana Pacers much of the first half, the Atlanta Hawks can't quite hold in the second half and fell at home 100-97 on Monday. In perhaps their most exciting game of the season as far as tension goes, the difference in the game was one shot - a late three-pointer by none other than Reggie Miller. It goes down as a loss in the record books, but the Hawks kept up their recent trend of playing tough and giving themselves a chance to win.

NBA Power Rankings (1-19-04).
http://www.fullsportpress.com/rankings.html

27.(26) Atlanta Hawks (12-29) The Hawks had a big win over San Antonio to kick off their week and a victory over Toronto to end it. Sandwiched between the victories however was a loss in Indiana. Atlanta is playing a little better basketball, but still hanging near the cellar of the league. They just don’t have a consistent enough offense to hang with the rest of the NBA.
