Pretty much a toss-up between the former #1 overall pick and the former #2 overall pick. Both teams should hope for better from these guys next season if they are going to fulfill their promise.
Bargnani was a foreign rook! Unlike MW, whose Tendex PER decreased, Bargnani's will increase at least a couple of points indicating not only improvement but a transition overseas and to the pros. It's certainly more difficult to move and play overseas as a 21 yo NBA rook than than it is a homegrown 2nd yr NBA 20 yr old. If he's better already, Bargnani should stay better.
W
?? Why should a foreign player be worse than a younger homegrown player?
I agree MW's static PER number was ugly but look behind the numbers and you find John Hollinger identified Marvin as one of the most improved players in the league because his PER jumped way up the second half of the season once he was healthy.
(Did anyone really expect Yao Ming to struggle compared to Drew Gooden when they were one year apart and Gooden was one year younger and homegrown?)
There is no legitimate basis to think that Barngani's year as a 21 year old was "great" if you think Marvin was a disappointment, IMO.
Their numbers are very comparable. One is younger, the other foreign. Boo hoo for both of them. Both need to step it up this next season if they want to be stars and there is good reason to think that both will (Marvin's improved PER the second half of the season & Bargnani's similarly improved PER over the course of the season).
