STARTERS
PG - Teague: 1.58 million
G - Johnson: 18.04 million
F - Marvin: 7.5 million
PF - Zaza: 4.75 million
C - Howard: 17.89 million
BENCH
G - Hinrich: 8 million
F - Anderson: 2.25 million
G - McGrady: 1.1 million?
F - Radmanovic: 1.1 million?
C - Collins: 1.1 million?
G - Sy: .79 million
F - Rolle: .79 million
C - Benson: .79 million?
Total payroll: approximately 65.7 million . . . and roughly 4 million under the TAX to possibly use the 3+ million trade exception . . or even re-sign Jamal Crawford if need be and go over the tax.
Am I missing somebody?
Honestly, I would do this, even if I didn't have a guarantee from Dwight that he would re-sign here. It would be taking a HUGE RISK, but it might pay off in the form of an NBA Championship. And it would be a revenue EXPLOSION for the ASG.
And if Dwight won a title in his home city, would he be quick to leave after one year, seeing that the Hawks could pay him the most money AND he'd instantly become the most beloved sports figure in the history of Atlanta sports?
From Orlando's standpoint, we'd be giving them 2 good young forwards + 2 first round draft picks . . for Howard.
While I would trade ANY of our 2 stars for Howard, this deal would make the most sense. I know we're not supposed to put trade proposals on the homecourt, but I would appreciate the mods if they would at least leave this up for a day or two, before moving it . .
If the ASG wanted to take a risk and bring a title to Atlanta, and make a ton of money, this is the time to do it.

I don't know that I'd trade away everything just to rent Howard for a season . . .

2nd question . . . if the Hawks wouldn't trade Smith and Horford . . or a combination of JJ and Smith or Horford . . for a sure fire Hall of Famer like Dwight Howard, will they ever trade them for anybody?
I mean, this is the type of risk taking move that a team should do, if they're willing to change their destiny. Playing it safe is NOT going to see us proceed as a team, unless our stars drastically improve.
And I'm sorry . . even if Josh Smith isn't here, and we make a major run at a title ( or even win it ), Dwight isn't going to say . . "well, Josh Smith isn't here, so I'm not re-signing". That relationship is overblown in my opinion. Otherwise, Dwight would be asking for a trade request to Atlanta, instead of Brooklyn.

Eazy . .. you'd have the most dominant force at center in the league. You could almost stick Shelden Williams beside Dwight. And like I illustrated with my opening post, we'd be more under the Luxury Tax with that trade, than we are right now. That would give us the option to use the MLE on a decent PF ( if people are worried about a PF ). You put a rebounding monster like Reggie Evans beside Dwight, and we'd have the best rebounding frontline in the league.
We'd go from 28th in rebounding, to 1st in rebounding . . without the worries of either Dwight and Reggie venturing out to 20+ feet to shoot jumpers.
Dwight DOMINATED us last playoffs, despite how heralded Jason Collins was for his "defense and agitation". The only reason why we beat Orlando, is because their shooters were garbage . . and because we got stellar guard play from Jamal, JJ, and Hinrich.

Zaza can play PF beside Dwight . . or the other way around. Put Zaza at center and Dwight at PF.

So why isn't Dwight asking to be traded to Atlanta, if he and Josh are that close and Dwight couldn't possibly play here without Josh?
Like I said, if the Magic WANTED to, they could trade Dwight to Atlanta right now ( if the Hawks offered up pieces that they liked ), and there's nothing that Dwight could do about it until after the season. He'd have to play for the Hawks in the 2011 - 12 season.
At that point, let's see how it goes. Let's see if Dwight wouldn't re-sign with Atlanta, even if we made a deep playoff run ( EC Finals or NBA Finals ).
I'll say it again . . . if the ASG wouldn't be willing to part ways with Smith + Horford for a guy like Dwight Howard, then the "core" will never be broken up.

We wouldn't be any better than Orlando with that line up. Trading both Al and Josh at the same time is.... It's hard to do without making a move for another legit starter.

A guy like Reggie Evans comes to mind.
PG - Teague
G - Johnson
F - Marvin
PF - R. Evans
C - Howard
You now have a frontcourt who instantly becomes the best rebounding frontcourt in the league. If Teague shows that his Chicago playoff performance wasn't a fluke, we now have a solid backcourt offensively and defensively. Of course, you downgrade JJ though, so it really doesn't matter if I like this lineup or not . . lol.
All I know is that we'd finally have a legit inside - outside pffensive game, as well as better defense on the perimeter, and we've effectively addressed our rebounding issues.
That's too much of a risk for the ASG to do though.
That squad is better than what we currently have
