Minny's got an PG too many and a PF too many according to their own beat writers. And they want/need someone who can play the 2.
We have a PG too few and while we'd prefer to land a conventional C, failing that, we at least need another big.
Ridnour is the prohibitive odd-man-out in MIN, and yet, a Sund favorite.
Randolph, the other prohibitive odd-man-out in MIN, is a big whose skill set fits really well with our rotation.
Then, I see that DAL has been trying to low-ball Stevenson whose perimeter D and 3 shooting served them so well in their championship run. So, we take the payroll we save from the difference in salaries from this trade, and give most of it to Stevenson.
Ready to start the season... and, at that, under the LT.

All I can tell you is it was rumored to be the case when they took Derrick Williams in the draft... and then someone wrote this for ESPN...
Spin: The 2010-11 season was supposed to be Randolph's breakout. Not only was he given an opportunity to compete for a starting spot on a fantasy-friendly Mike D'Antoni team, but the Knicks also had a vested interest in seeing him succeed. Randolph, however, disappointed mightily with New York and quickly found himself in D'Antoni's doghouse. After being traded to the Wolves in the Carmelo Anthony deal, Randolph showed why he was so highly touted coming into the season by averaging a productive 11.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, 0.8 steals and 0.7 blocks in only 20.1 minutes per game. Randolph is still just 22 years old and has a ton of talent, but Minnesota is now loaded with talented frontcourt players in Kevin Love, Michael Beasley and Derrick Williams, making it increasingly difficult for Randolph to earn consistent minutes. Keep him on your radar due to his upside, but realize that minutes may be tough to come by.

Minny does have a PG too many. Which is why it makes no sense to them to make a trade for Hinrich.

I understand and somewhat agree, but I wouldn't say "no sense"... he's regarded as a viable SG as well. I do agree, though, that they might look to exhaust some other options before they'd go this way.

For some additional insight into the general sentiment regarding Randolph, here's a Minny blog that seems to indicate the mixed feelings they hold...

It would be a great trade to make, but I don't think Minny would be interested in that they could get a pure SG from someone else.

I'd tend to agree, actually, frosgrim.
On the other hand, for whatever reason, I've been reading some comments Adelman's been making and he's been adamant that he wants to see some defensive leadership on the roster. And the deal also exchanges an $8 mil expiring for 3 years of Ridnour @ ~$3.5 mil.
In all of my years of being a sports fan, I can count on one hand the number of times that any one of my pro sports teams has actually made a deal vaguely resembling something I'd thought of... I don't know what these GMs are thinking.

I don't like the deal. I really want to see if we can get Howard. If we get him, we will have to overpay. That means Smoove/Horford for Dwight and Hedo. We would need a PF. Hedo is not going to cut it. We need to hold on to Hinrich contract to try to land Andrea B or A. Jefferson in another trade.
