One would assume that the much better player makes a lot more money...If not why would a team trade a better player who makes less for a worse player who makes more?
Okay?  So maybe you take two players who make less money, combine them and make a trade for one.

There's as much chance of the Hawks giving me a 10 day contract as the A$G amnesty clauses Joe and has to pay him AND still fill his salary under the cap with other players. The only way Joe would get that treatment is if the A$G sells the team and the new ownership decided it was worth it.

IF ASG was worried about the money, they would let Joe at the height of his value. You amnesty him while he's an allstar of the championship game... teams will have a bidding war to get him.  The more they bid, the less ASG pays.  However, there would be a great backlash from the fans.  Same fans who cry daily about Joe's contract would curse ASG for getting out of Joe's contract at the height of his value.

The bottom line is that the fans have to determine if they want to be fans of what's on the floor or fans of what's going on in the GM's office.  Sometimes, those things don't equate.
