Apparently not until the off$ea$on:

acknowledged in a letter to season-ticket holders this week, signed by president Bob Williams, that scoreboards at either end of Philips Arena have not been operational this season. The matrix boards had displayed real time player statistics.

The scoreboards have failed to work since September, the end of the WNBA season. According to the letter, the scoreboards can not be repaired and will be replaced by “new HD ready LED boards” during the offseason.

“We are confident that the multi-million dollar end zone video presentation with which we’ll open next season will be a vast improvement,” Williams wrote.

Yeah...so we won't be going into the luxury tax anytime soon.

Probably has more to do with not having the ability to do the construction work during the season than the $ thing.

One thing is for sure I definitely get a kick out of how our digital equipment in Philips has so many problems, which is always on my mind when I'm making an electronic purchase and Philips brand is an option.

If that were the case, then why didn't they have them fixed back in September? That is more likely the down time for Philips than any other point in the year.

If you recall, back in September there was a little sale pending which involved the Hawks. Why invest into the product when you are selling it? Money is written all over this issue to begin with. You may be right that currently this is a timing issue since Philips does not have many open dates, but this has been known for a while. It might not have been known to the public (hence A$G going with the "if we ignore it, then it might go away" strategy), but the A$G has known about this for a long period of time.

I don't think it has that much to do with money.  There's a lot of logistics involved as well.  Typically these large HD screens are custom built to order so they'll fit correctly when installed.  There's also controlling software to install and integrate, etc.

What determines how long this process takes?

A lot of factors could determine time frame:
1. research for available options if upgrading to determine how much to spend (it's just like buying a flat screen you do your research on what you want for how much you have to spend)
2. Order time
3. Removal of old and installation of new (downtime)
4. Availability of provider
5. Trouble shooting
