First it was Pero. Now, it's Gustavo's turn to fill up the stat sheet in international play. His Mexico team gets going tomorrow in the FIBA Americas tourney in Caracas.

CARACAS - Spanish coach Sergio Valdeomillos confirmed Thursday the list of players selected to represent the basketball in the tournament Premundial Mexico, to be held between August 30 and September 11 in Caracas, Venezuela, which awards four quotas for Spain 2014.

Among the players called is the power forward Gustavo Ayón (2.13 meters from Atlanta Hawks)...

The Mexican representative will be part of the group B with Argentina, Paraguay, Venezuela and Dominican Republic.

After some consideration, Al Horford declined last month to play for Dominican Republic.

The FIBA Americas tournament began in Venezuela on Friday, but the host team had no answer to Mexico's Gustavo Ayón.

Can you spot the former Hawk in this paragraph?

Mexico 65, Venezuela 56 -- Mexico's Gustavo Ayón dominated both ends of this game, scoring 22 points, grabbing 18 rebounds and blocking four shots in the victory. Jorge Gutierrez had 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting -- the most efficient performance on a team that shot 32.8 percent.

Venezuela shot slightly better at 33.9 percent, but it lacked a big-time scorer. Small forward Donta Smith and center Luis Bethelmy led the team with 10 points each. Bethelmy missed out on a double-double with only nine rebounds.

A little thigh bruise for Gustavo (14 pts in <14 mins., 7-7 FG) in the midst of a laugher against Paraguay. He'll likely stay sidelined the rest of the game.

Nice Matt-to-Julio mimicry.

I still think POLLOS when I see Ayón. Wait, did I just come up with my new avatar idea?

Pollos Hermanos?

Exactly. It was a big time Chat Factory topic of conversation when we played the Magic and Bucks last year. Do not let him near and box cutters!

You're going from two guys to barely half of one?

Another efficient outing for GA (8-for-11 FG, 16 points, 8 defensive rebs) in a decisive wire-to-wire win over the Dominated Republic. Mexico gets Luis Scola and Argentina tomorrow.

"Consigue que el tiro fuera de aquí!"

The Pacers' Luis Scola managed 25 points for Argentina off of 16 shots and 16 free throw attempts.

Up next in Round 2 for Mexico is Canada, featuring the newly-ambidextrous Tristan Thompson of the Cavs and Magic forward Andrew Nicholson.
