Do you realize how many different players/front offices, rebuilds, etc. some of us have gone through? I've been on this boat since 1978. I watched Hubie Brown's Hawks get dismissed after grinding 7 game series in playoff runs back in the 1970s. I saw Nique and Fratello. Kevin Loughery, Lenny Wilkins and every coach in between and after. This rebuild has been going on since 1968 and we are asked to be patient with whats going on with this draft? Its the true fans who are passionate about the Hawks who are complaining.
You got a lot of fake fans that point the finger at others because they are "conditional" fans. They lock into a player or players and see nothing else the organization is doing and could care less as long as they get to cheer and validate themselves through "their guy". Its why the Hawks get away with not being serious about championships.
This is true. My first Hawks memories are from 1979. My Dad said he took me to games even earlier than that but in 1979 I was three and can remember Fast Eddie and John Drew. I've been here for a long time. @Gray Mule is the oldest Hawks fan I know of anywhere.
I hate to say that your bolded is sadly true especially here on the Squawk. I used to call this place AgendaSquawk because it was far more about being "right" then just supporting the team.
This draft is the most divisive class I have ever seen. Even more than 2013 and 2000.
If I can offer comfort to Hawks fans it is this:
Tony Ressler is actually, finally, letting the basketball operations run this team without his interference.
Landry is smarter than most here give him credit for being. I actually believe this FO with a hands off owner will make this team better.

I don't think we have the same source(s) in the Hawks so just consider this confirmation from my sources with yours. Even if we got Clingan and the 2025 pick back we're doing good IMO.

Update:
We are down to basically two choices:
Take Sarr and get the Wizards to move up to get him. Wizards want him badly. #1 for #2 and #26 or something like that in value. We would take Clingan at #2 or take Risacher for the below scenario.
Take Risacher and either keep him or flip him to the Spurs. This would be like the old Elton Brand for Tyson Chandler trade. The Bulls back then would only do that trade if Curry was there for them at #4 in that draft. When Atlanta...sigh...passed on Gasol by flipping him for SAR the Bulls got their guy and made the trade. If the Hawks had taken Curry or traded it to someone else that took Curry...the Bulls don't do the deal.
So in this case if Clingan is there at 4 the Spurs take him and we swap guys plus pick up our 2025 and 2027 firsts.
In that scenario we turn Risacher into Clingan and our 2025 and 2027 unprotected firsts back. Spurs still have the pick swap in 2026.
If Clingan is gone...we just keep Risacher.
This seems to be the current thinking of the FO. Again, this can change. Teams are upping their interest in #1, DJM, Capela and Hunter. I'm hearing teams are making pitches for AJ and Kobe as well.
Houston is the swing draft choice. I wouldn't rule out a separate trade to #3 if this scenario above happens just to get Clingan and give #4 to Houston so they can take Reed.

I disagree. The more videos I watch the more I can see him being the best player in this draft.
I didn't say he wasn't a good prospect. Just not taking him at #1.

I've watched enough tape of Risacher to not want him as the number one pick. Give me Sarr, Clingan or Reed over him. I just don't see it. I think he's a top five pick but not the #1 pick. If another team like the Spurs really wants him at #1 for goodness sake trade down.

Been told Hawks just taking Sarr and keeping him is a building voice in the Hawks FO.

Plus who wants to try and pronounce Risacher for 5 years? That name gets stuck on my tongue trying to come out. I'd rather just take Sarr and see if that squeezes Washington.
Reese (like reese's pieces) - a- che (like club che che)
It really isn't that hard to pronounce.

I wouldn't say that he is not a reliable source. The Hawks are doing what they should be doing and making people unsure who the real target is and trying to drive up the price of trading up for #1. That is doing what a smart FO should be doing.

3 hours ago, ShooterSays said:I used the same Pistons analogy when we got Dejounte, but it’s turned out terrible. Genuinely curious why you think Trae / Reed would be different on defense.
His shooting is eye popping. That’s for sure.
Three reasons which are his main qualities:
Shooting: he's not a James Harden/Trae guy that dribbles forever and takes a 30 foot step back. He CAN do that but he's just as good as catching and shooting it. His shooting is ****ing ungodly. He can shoot it from anywhere in any way you can shoot. He can attack the basket. He can cut. He's not afraid of contact.
Defense: he is a good defender. He had the best max vertical in the entire combine. He showed in spades with his blocks he can just jump up and contest people's shots. His hands are elite. Watch his defense. He's constantly getting steals, deflections, blocks, tips...his hands are ALIVE and active.
Basketball IQ: This is where the Mark Price comparison really comes through. Price's basketball IQ on both sides of the ball was through the roof. Reed has that. He is usually one or two steps ahead of the opponent in where the ball is going and where the play is developing. You can't fake that.
You take those three and add that to Trae and yes, I'm not worried about them being short.

Any idea How his workout went with us? If he was 6'6 it would be a no brainer...
I've heard Reed has impressed every team he's worked out with including the Hawks

You know for everyone saying Trae and Reed wouldn't work...the Pistons won two titles with a short backcourt. Reed is a good defender and an absolute sniper. That would be fun as hell to watch.
Reed is honestly my favorite prospect in the entire draft. He feels and plays like a slightly larger Mark Price.

I've said it before, I will say it again: they won't let a prospect dictate to them if they will draft them or not. They had OO higher than Haliburton back in that draft for those curious.

What’s the latest with KAT to ATL? I know there has been whispers in the past about it. @Sothron
It has probably been buried in this mega thread but once the A-rod sale died there was no way Taylor was breaking up the TWolves. He's waited twenty years since the first time the TWolves went to the WCF to have a team go back there. He's not breaking that team up.

It was three firsts from us. Unprotected in 2025 and 2027 and a pick swap where the Spurs pick the highest in 2026. That's three firsts plus the Charlotte fake first. It was a horrible trade because Ressler's refusal to pay the LT meant this team could never contend. Trading for Murray was an all in move backed by...all out moves from the 7th richest owner in the NBA refusing, season after season, to pay the LT.

If you trade away Trae you are setting your franchise back for 10 years. Not only that…why do this in a draft year that doesn’t have a standout #1 pick!
I’m sorry but hawks are losing any Trae to the spurs trade. Getting picks back for Trae even if unprotected does nothing for us in my opinion. It would be a full rebuild mode…
kind of hard to imagine what a good trade is for Trae with the spurs when you know you can’t get back wemby ….so how on earth is it a good trade for our franchise cornerstone??….Cause we get back assets?…don’t nobody give a damn about those picks!
not asking for you to share anymore info @Sothron….but trading Trae makes this #1 pick underwhelming!
Now that I think about it….is this why sarr doesn’t want to come to Atlanta ?….they threw out the idea that Trae may not be here in Atlanta for him to play with ?
again not asking for more info to be shared just sharing my own personal thoughts. We are in the most important offseason of Atlantas history because our franchise cornerstone has 1 year left and it’s sounding like we are just going to reset instead of add.
Just because the team is considering all options doesn't mean they are going to act on it. Frankly, the fact they ARE open to looking at all options is a good thing for the franchise. Travis was fired in part because he wanted to blow things up, move Trae and begin a second rebuild.
Now we have a FO with a lot of voices in it and no one is being fired because they are advocating for a rebuild. It is crystal clear the current rudderless direction of trying to compete without paying the LT and sending out players for nothing has failed. They know this. They are trying to course correct.
I agree this it the most important offseason in Hawks history. I have been a Hawks fan since 1979. I cannot ever remember a time where the team could completely go in two different directions and both directions are valid. Rebuild or contend? That's the question.
I personally think they will go the contend route because unless we got out 3 firsts back from the Spurs rebuilding is NOT an option until 2028.

Kinda makes sense though, they’d need to know fan sentiment around trading the franchise player, and if they are trading him, slow leaking rumors to prepare the fan base. I don’t get the privacy around draft workouts though.
I think this isn't going to violate anyone's sources sense of trust to talk about this.
Teams hide their workout lists for a variety of reasons.
Any information a team has on another team is ammo they can use in future dealings. If you know what kind of players teams bring in for workouts you can start to figure out what that team values in players. You can see what range they think they are going to draft in. Are they giving out a "we'll take you if you are here at X" promises which literally happens all the time. Are they only bringing in a handful of players if they have a high lottery pick?
With the Hawks this year specifically you can tell by the leaks in the media who the confirmed workouts are so far and yes, there have been secret not confirmed to the media workouts as well. Why does this matter for us, right now?
We only have one pick in the entire draft. We have the first pick. Why would the Hawks work out a lot (and it is a lot) of players with only the first pick in the draft? It tells other team the Hawks are open to doing business at trading down or possibly making another trade to get another pick in the draft.
If you are working teams into trying to trade for your #1 pick you want to touch all the players you can. Make everyone worried we might take THEIR guy. If you are another team and you think "the Hawks are only going to take Alex Sarr" well crap, you (the Hawks) just lost any leverage in trade talks.
If, though, other teams see a wide variety of players being worked out...see above. Now you have teams worried what the Hawks are thinking. How much more if you are a high lottery team would you be willing to get YOUR guy with the #1 pick?
All this sounds like Secret Squirrel hijinks but it really does matter. There's a reason you haven't seen me really blow up with talks about things going on. Or @thecampster or @NBASupes .
Someone asked earlier for tidbits. I gave tidbits. There might be more than two serious trade offers for Trae. I've only heard of two and one of those is the Spurs. I don't mind sharing that because it was reported here first and then later by outside media months earlier that Trae wouldn't be opposed to a trade to the Spurs.

Same, SA is the only thing that makes sense. To be fair, it is also an absolutely dream pairing with Trae/Wemby so its not out of the realm of possibility they give up a huge haul for Trae.
Spurs are one of the teams. can't say who the other team is.

There's two real trade offers for Trae the team is considering. I'm not talking about the crap from bleacher report or random realgm trade offers.
There's five teams interested in trading for the #1 pick.
There's five teams interested in Capela and I think he's gone.
There's six teams interested in Murray. I think he's gone.
There's four teams interested in Hunter. I think he's likely to be gone.
AJ is being used as a sweetener option in some offers we are sending to teams on our end.
When I say teams are interested I mean real, actual trade talks not random media driven narratives.

I'm a little surprised, even though I might have missed it, that no one noticed in Landry's presser that he was asked point blank who was making the final call on the pick and Landry said it was his decision.

Landry says 10 days before the draft, they want to keep the pick. Isn't that a strategic thing to say? Like they want teams to think we value the pick, right? GMs use the media strategically, not to show you the cards they are playing.
Even if they plan on trading the pick, you always public face by saying you are going to keep it and use it. You have to play the game with the media. they know this. They have a plethora of draft boards and options lined up depending on what happens with trade offers or just flat out using the #1 pick and that's that.
