He's either signing for the max or taking a very slim home town discount at this point...Probably the max. Assuming 1 year down the road we're back to business as normal, the upcoming cap will go up a few million. He's going to get the max from someone and then we'll have to match. Given the cap goes up to $112 million next year (my estimate), Giving him the max will not put us in the LT but it will cost us one of Galli/BB in 2 years. When its Trae's turn.
Question:
With Gallo and Bogi's contracts, would we be able to go over the Cap to re-sign them if we wanted to (and go into the tax)? I guess I'm asking if we'd have their Bird rights to use or will they walk if we are over the Cap? I don't want to be in a Boston / Hayward situation where the player leaves and we are over the cap so we have no recourse to replace them. Is that where we'll be in 3 years?

You wait these things out and sign him at the end of the year if you're confident he's getting the max at the end anyway.
This is what I've been saying. There's no reason or compulsion to do the deal now unless it's for trade purposes. Otherwise, just wait til you have to do the deal.

Zero chance. He's too emotionally involved - which is fine if he wouldn't meddle in the FO decisions. But since he does, there's no chance the Falcons will ever win at the highest level again, imo.

Trae
Bogi
Cam
JC
Capela
Those are your starters imo. Gallo first off the bench. Wouldn’t surprise me if he comes in for Capela with Collins sliding over to the 5.
Cam and Hunter will sub out at 3
Bogi and Huerter sub out at 2

Are we getting philosophical here? Why does NBA basketball matter at all in that case? I'm not calling him a liar, I respect his enthusiasm and energy, but most of the information seems highly questionable and often wrong. Is having 30 pages about a so-called mega trade, which the details can't be revealed, really productive? To each his own, I'd rather talk about realistic possibilities.
No. Not getting philosophical at all. I've just never understood one person telling another person on a message board what they should believe or not believe.
And fwiw I wasn't specifically saying YOU were calling him a liar. I was saying in general why would someone call him a liar. Why is that necessary? Truth is, peo called him a liar just today. Maybe I should have just said that. LOL

That's fair, but Supes could say the Lakers are trading us LeBron and Anthony Davis and people will start responding and asking for details like it's plausible. Have a little hearty skepticism. Jeez.
My honest question to these type of criticisms is always the same....why does it matter? Why is it necessary to call Supes a liar even if you think hes BSing everyone?I just don't see the need for it. Who cares what someone believes or doesn't? This board is all entertainment anyway, imo.

Whoo, I still think the cRaptors consistent program will allow them to stay solid and ahead of us. We'd have to come together mighty fast to leap them Realistically, we'll have an adjustment period since there's limited ramp-up to the season.
Better than Philly? Whoo, again. I'm not high on PHI, at all. I think things will crash 'n burn under Rivers AS ALL HIS TEAMS DO (no idea why people ignore that), but I don't think it'll happen right away. So their record could still be better than ours.
So the Raps are interesting to me. I have A TON of respect for Nick Nurse and what he does with that team. I would still lean to them being much better than Hawks, but I'm not so certain of it given the losses of Gasol and Ibaka. I'm not really an Aaron Baynes fan. I just don't know what the drop off will be given their losses.
As for Philly. I'm not seeing it with them.
I'll admit to being high on the Hawks and usually end up overvaluing them, but still. I think at this point, they will be competing for 5th or 6th in the east with Bogi.

So CBS Power Rankings have east teams in the following order :
- Bucks (2)
- Heat (3)
- Celtics (4)
- Raptors (6)
- Nets (8)
- 76ers (9)
- Pacers (14)
- Hawks (18)
- Magic (19)
- Hornets (23)
- Bulls (24)
- Wizards (25)
- Pistons (27)
- Knicks (28)
- Cavs (29)
You guys agree with the teams ranked ahead of us? I can see the case for everyone but I think we outclass the Pacers at this point if the Bogi signing goes through. East is strong AF at the top now.
Just my opinion, only teams CLEARLY better than Hawks (assuming Bogi is here) are Bucks, Heat, and Nets. I'm not sold on C's or Raps and think Hawks are just better than Philly and Pacers.

Trae is an impact player as is Luka but one does a lot more for winning basketball. You can be an impact player and still need to do more to help winning Basketball.
Trae playing with a better cast will help him tremendously but that doesn't mean, those improvements aren't needed.
Trae played last year as the best player on a team full of guys that weren't even playing at NBA replacement level. I understand making winning plays but when you are surrounded by guys that have no business being in the NBA AND you are trying to win, I just think it's really easy to go down the hero-ball path like we've seen Trae do. Maybe he was hunting stats some, but I think it was more a realization that he didn't have any competent help for most of the season so he just tried to do it all himself.
One of the most exciting things about this season will be seeing how well Trae plays on a team chalk full of NBA level talent and experience. How much better can he be? How much better can he make the players around him? IMO, that will be fascinating to watch.

If a team offers him a 2+1 RFA deal and he signs, that's it...Hawks either match or don't. No other alternatives.
I get that. My point is they can offer him 5 years as a competitive offer. I mean, sure, JC could choose the 2+1 over a 5 yr max but I'd take that chance. I can't imagine JC would be so upset about not getting an early extension that he would turn down 3 guaranteed years.

That's a great way to get a team to offer your guy a 2+1 at the max. Then he's gone after two years.
Maybe. Maybe not. Hawks can still offer 5 years at the max. JC is all star capable but he isn't a superstar. 5 years means a lot more than 2 for guys like him. Just my opinion.

I was an advocate of waiting until Schlenk decided to go all in with ALL our capspace this offseason. There really is no point it waiting until next offseason since we won't have ANY capspace to go after FAs. This is it. This is our team for the next year at $100. We'll be locked in at $112 million (projected cap) with John's $12 mill caphold going into next season.
I say we have 2 years to figure out what happens with Huerter, Reddish and Hunter. Trae will have signed his early rookie extention, Collins extended (after the Bogi deal). Assuming no trades:
In 2 years Gallo and Capela will both have 1 year left, Rondo and Dunn expired. Bogi with 1+1 left (if he signs).
Huerter will be a RFA - will he be a super sub or will he be to us what Bogi is the Sac, looking to move on for a starting spot. This year will tell a lot.
Reddish and Hunter will be eligible for early rookie extensions if they have been GOOD ENOUGH. If not they'll both hit RFA or we trade 1 or both like we did with Prince.
Yes, we haven't seen the JC/Collins pairing, but why is the assumption that JC is the one that gets moved, maybe it's Capela. Just saying.
All of that makes sense from a cap perspective. I'm just saying it benefits the Hawks to wait. If JC doesn't work with the rest they can trade him or capela. Easier to do if he's still on a rookie deal. Just don't see the benefit of extending him early.
Heck he could get hurt or have another drug penalty. Any number of things could happen. If you don't have to extend, why do it?

LOL . . now it's "let it breathe". The team wanted to get something done before the season, but now it's let's wait and see how he plays with lesser players?
What kind of message does that send to Collins, when all of the guys around him in his draft class are getting huge extensions?
So I look around the league, and I say to myself
"Self . . who are the big men ( PFs and Cs ) who are better than Collins"?
- Giannis
- Davis
- Jokic
- Towns
- Embiid
- Adebayo
Then I say . .
"Self . . would all of those guys get MAX contracts from a team"?
I say YES.
Then I look at this site:
http://www.hoopsstats.com/basketball/fantasy/nba/playerstats/20/1/eff/1-1
and see that Collins ranks 12th in NBA efficiency . . . ( Trae is 15th, by the way )
((Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks) - ((Field goals attempts - Field goals made) + (Free throws attempts - Free throws made) + Turnovers)
Collins was the only player in the league last year to average more than 20 ppg, but have less than a 23% usage rate. At that rate, he should've been averaging somewhere around 15 - 17 ppg, not damn near 22 ppg.
His numbers and efficiency SCREAM that he should be getting the ball more . . . a lot more . . . instead of deferring to guys who can't shoot or finish at the rim. The 3 point volume should definitely be higher.
Just remember folks, paying these players MEGA dollars, is the cost of doing business as a playoff level team. You don't win in this league without star power, and good complimentary guys.
Laugh all you want. The team controls JC. It makes little sense to extend him now. More info is always better than less info. Another season of data will help inform their decision. I'm not saying don't extend him. Just that now isn't the time.
I don't care what message it sends to JC. If the Hawks want him long term they can sign him in a year.
-
I like JC a lot, but to me the prudent thing to do is wait. Let's see how it all fits together this year before committing to a huge contract. Not sure why there's a rush to extend now just because you can. Remember JC and Capela haven't even played together. Let alone adding in Big O, Gallo, and the rest.
Let it breathe. See how the season goes and then make your decision.

The reason to match is they can trade him a year from now instead him going to us for nothing.
I get the impression trading him in a year may not be as easy as it sounds. It would be costly to do and they'd be at the mercy of the league to provide suitable compensation. Sometimes it's just better to cut your losses.
To me, you only match if you decide you are ok with BB being part of the longterm plan. In that case, the better play would be match and trade Hield.

Well I do hope we get him. 4 yr/72 mil is a hefty commitment though.
I don't see the downside. The Hawks will have a starting caliber SG for 4 years. They have a clean sheet for the most part and have the ability to sign all their current players when the time comes. Even if 4/72 is an overpay (most ive seen say otherwise), its still one player and it isn't a max deal that limits other transactions.

Not hard to understand. Was hoping he really had his mind set on Atlanta and coming here . That’s all.
I think he wants to be paid first. Atl is probably in drivees seat until indy comes in. Now he's weighing his options. It's imprudent to expect him to not consider other offers as well.

The obvious answer is he's still deciding between Atl and Indy. Not sure why that's so hard to understand.

Beat writers generally aren't openly bullish unless someone told them something.
This is why I'm cautiously optimistic. No idea why it's not done yet. Or why it's not announced. Maybe Bogdan hasn't agreed. Maybe they are looking at sign and trade. I dunno.

I mean, Chris put out a story with Bogdan in the depth chart. That's pretty telling. The Peachtree hoops guys put out a salary cap note with Bogdan included. Not sure what more they could do other than out right announce it.

Chris Kirchsner of the Athletic's thoughts on the likelyhood of signing Bogi.
I'm going to lower my expectations on this one though.
Regarding Bogdan, I have to wonder of the beat guys know something. Whether its Chris or the Peachtree hoops guys, they are all speaking with strange confidence as if he's already signed. Its weird but gives me some hope.

It's going to be interesting. They signed away all their flexibility this off season so all of the growth of the team will need to be internal or through trades. I would think if the team shows growth and gets better each year, he would be willing to pay the tax to contend for a title. But if in 3 years this same team is still competing for a 5 or 6 seed and 1st round exit, there'd be no point to pay the tax.
I think when you look at the roster, you can make the argument that 9 guys are still in their upward arc of their careers and could realistically improve from year to year over the next 3 years (Trae, JC, Bogi, Cam, Hunter, Huerter, Big O, Bruno, and Goodwin). That's really exciting to me. The others - Rondo, Gallo, Snell, Dunn, Capela, and Hill are what they are at this point, imo.
