Shump is an actual defender who has Finals experience.

Also has tech experience, right? I'm sure that has nothing to do with your favor though.  Hehe

All seriousness, I'm not opposed to bringing him in but I wouldn't expect much at this point. I just think there's zero chance he's any WORSE than bembry, crabbe, turner, et al...

You’re right it could be all speculation, so we will see how things play out over the next few months. But if we start making moves....

But hasn't making moves always been part of the plan? The FA class next year sucks and the Hawks only have like 6 players under contract with 70+ Mil to spend. Making trades has always seemed like the prudent way to grow the roster in the short term, imo.

I don't think the Hawks making moves really proves anything. Trae is unhappy that they are losing. A lot of people are unhappy. Doesn't mean he's demanding a trade to get out of Atlanta.

Another question to be asked is are we good enough to start being contenders... Do we have enough talent to start being great? The answer to that is no. In the NBA, you either gotta be worst or first.  Everything else in between is trend mill. I would take no pride in seeing this team make a push for a 7th or 8th seed and get knocked out in the first round.  I'd rather see us get a top-10 draft pick and keep building. We could end up being one of the deepest teams in the league if we play it smart. If we end up on the tread mill, we will lose Trae and be right back where we were 3 seasons ago... except all of us fans will be 10 years older.  Could you imagine Trae leaving to team up with Luka? What a slap in the face that would be.

Scenario: It's the last game of the 2019-2020 season... if the Hawks win, they're in the playoffs as the 8th seed and Brooklyn is eliminated. If they lose, Brooklyn gets in as the 8th seed which means their pick in the draft conveys to the Hawks. The Hawks are back in the lottery, have Brooklyn's pick, and have cap space to burn. What are you rooting for?

Personally, I would be rooting for the team to make the playoffs. The odds say the Hawks would have a minimal chance at top 3 so the only thing they are losing is Bkn's pick this year and it would convey later. More importantly, however, IF the Hawks faced a Game 82 that mattered, it would very likely mean that the rookies had become more consistent and the young core developed to the point of making the team substantially better in the 2nd half of the season.

I actually believe the core of Trae, Bonehead, Kev, Cam, and Hunter is solid enough to build around without needed additional lottery picks. Especially when they have tons of cap space to spend. They would get playoff experience AND go into the off season with a ton of flexibility for FA, Draft, and Trades.

    Give me the 8 seed!

Was thinking the same thing. IF he increases his efficiency while also playing closer to 35 min/ gm, his overall stats will skyrocket (unless of course he significantly reduces his attempts which I don't see happening).

Damn. This is EXACTLY what has happened through first quarter of season. Trae currently sitting at 34.6 min/gm with increased efficiency and his numbers have skyrocketed to 28.9 pts/gm.  I still maintain that IF he had a decent roster around him he'd be over 10 dimes per game as well. Bonehead needs to be ready when he gets back.

Hi, I'm here and NOT during the game. Thanks.

The problems with LP are pretty glaring if you have a decent basketball mind and actually watch Hawks games.

LP's lineups are TERRIBLE and expose our players to their weaknesses, instead of their strengths. For instance, starting Djones (weak defender and weak rebounder) along with Jabari (weak defender and weak rebounder) makes things VERY DIFFICULT and futile for Trae in the first 8 minutes of the game. If you've done any research you'll see that our lineup in the 1st qtr and 3rd qtr (when this lineup is employed) is HORRID. LP peanut brain doesn't realize that, and apparently neither do some of you. Sad!

Is our roster trash? Yes. I don't care about that though. Even with a trash roster you can still employ lineups and GAMEPLANS that play to your strengths. LP hasn't REMOTELY done that. For instance, our trapping strategy should be employed for about 5 minutes straight each half. Specifically when we got Bembry and Reddish in the lineup. Catch them off guard like they catch Trae offguard when they trap him. Speaking of trapping, LP STILL doesn't have a gameplan for when teams trap Trae. Pretty disgusting, pathetic and incompetent on LP's part. Its not like this is some new strategy that LP has JUST encountered. Trae has been getting trapped since game 3 of the season. LP has made ZERO adjustments or even gameplanned. It's obvious. IF you can't tell, then ur just a casual fan with a weak BBIQ. (Maybe you should be coach, apparently you are qualified if your BBIQ is low)

LP's strategy is bad and/or nonexistent. When the Hawks are in the playoffs next season we are going to get exposed. The fact is you need good coaching. Part of that nowadays is an analytics team.

It's OBVIOUS LP doesn't look at analytics. He is either incompetent or is playing politics. For instance, VC should NEVER, EVER EVER be played at the 4. He should be a third option at the 3 or the 2. NOT AT THE 4. If you watch any games it should be quite obvious....for anyone but peanut head LP.

That's just ONE of many examples. Would a new coach transform the team? No

Do I advocate firing LP right now? No. It wouldn't do much this season. But LP has shown has can't gameplan or put his players in a position to succeed. Period.

Hope that puts some things in prospective. The fact of the matter is most you kids work at mcdonalds as the fry guy.

Let the lawyers and the MBA that are basketball fans opine about LP's shortcomings. The stats don't lie. LP doesn't bother looking at the stats. Is he a cool guy? Yes. Is he a nice guy? Yes. Is he a good coach? No.

Your rants during games are reason enough not to pay any attention to you.

I'll just say this...there's a plethora of reasons the Hawks are sitting at 5-16 right now and LP isnt in the top 10. Reasonable people certainly understand this. So you can continue to rant til your little heart is content.

It’s not like the coach haters are actually going to respond to the OP. They’re conserving energy for their next tantrums.

It's pretty telling that they only show up DURING GAMES to scream FIRE LP.

So here we stand having entered December with everything that could go wrong having gone wrong for the young Hawks this season. John Collins' suspension and Huerter's injury just when he was starting to find his sea legs gutted the already thin rookie filled crew. To add insult to injury(suspension*) the NBA unleashed upon this rickety team the toughest schedule to start the season in recent memory. The results have been... yea.... pretty much as bad as one could realistically expect with a team starting the likes of  Cam Reddish, Deandre Bembry, Alex Len and Damian Jones on the regular against a gauntlet of MVP candidates, super teams and road back-to-backs that even good teams would grimace at.

A lot of the fans have already openly mutinied against sophomore coach LP, ravenously calling for his head in virtually every post on the game threads, and it's tough to blame them as some nights the team has looked like it doesn't belong in the NBA, while other nights they have fought hard against good teams like the Pacers, Raptors, and Bucks, just to fall apart late... Hope has seemingly been snuffed out by heartbreakers and laughers and questionable coaching decisions and it's all added up to one of the more disappointing seasons to date.

But guess what Hawks faithful? What would you say if I were to tell you that I am starting to see some light breaking through the long overbearing seemingly never ending darkness that is the 2019-2020 season? Seems like a crazy thought? The product of a desperate sick mind of an Atlantaholic that has had to resort to too much of the cerveza to make it through the last few months of Atlanta sports misery?? Well hear me out first before you jump to judgment.

After yesterdays blowout win that snapped the miserable 10 game losing streak that saw so many of our fans jump ship, the few of us who have dared to stick around and look at the NBA standings this morning will have been surprised to find that the Hawks are only 4 games out of the 8th seed, some quick fiddling with the abacus reveals that with 21 games in the books, there are still 61 games left to play. 4 games out, 61 games left to make up the distance. Season is not over yet folks, heck... it's really just began. On top of that fact, taking a gander at the remaining schedule further reveals that the brutal first quarter Tsunami that the team has had to navigate through is subsiding and December winds are starting to sway much more kindly with our next 9 games coming against the beatable Nets (twice), Charlotte, Chicago, Indiana, New York,  with only the Los Angeles, Miami and Utah games looking like longshots.

Did I mention that our favorite ginger sniper Huerter is set to return either next game against Brooklyn or if not against Charlotte?

So more hands on deck, calmer seas, and if we are somehow able to squeeze out a respectable 4 or 5 wins during this stretch we’ll more than likely be just a few games out of the 8th seed as we get our banished and disgraced first mate back... Hopefully with a massive chip on his shoulder and hungry to atone for his unintentional treachery.

As I said Hawks fans, season isn’t over. Maybe I’m a damn fool for still having some hope in this raggedy bunch of misfits, G-leaguers, and baby birds, but I’m still not giving up on them for this season just yet, not with so much basketball yet to play, not with our crew’s full reunion right around the bend and Captain Ice Trae the Unmerciful with his hands firmly on the helm.

What say you, fellow Hawks’ fans? The abused and punished, forgotten and mocked? Will you join this fool and madman on the hype ship to an unlikely playoff push? Even if we fail, even if the Hawks and up Hawking the season up and sending us sinking like a stone once again into the depths of the lottery… Well, at least there’ll be rum:rumple:

I'm down with any reason to be optimistic.  Using my own abacus:

First 21 games: Teams are cumulative 240-177 (.572 WP or equivalent of a 47 win team)

Next 21 games: Teams are cumulative 218-199 (.523 WP or equivalent of a 43 win team)

It's a start. Also worth noting that Bonehead is only out for 9 of the next 21 games. Those 9 games are against 5 teams with .500 or worse records and against teams with a cumulative 95-89 record (.516 WP or 42-win team). Can the Hawks find a way to go 5-4 over those nine and then be healthy at 10-20?  That would be best case, imo.

Are we grasping at straws? Sure. But desperate times call for desperate measures.

I've been saying it for at least the last three weeks. Our two prized rookies have looked terrible on offense this year. We need to give them time. Hunter is a 21 year old rookie who should be further along than he is. Cam is cookie dough levels of raw out there.

The rest of the team is a bunch bad contracts we got in trades. Len isn't bad but he's regressed this season away from the growth he was showing in the second half last season. Bembry needs serious run to see what he can actually do.

Our team going into this season was Young, Collins and a distant third in Red Velvet. We didn't know what the rookies would do and Parker was going to be our sixth man. Parker has lived up to being a good sixth man who shouldn't start. Our rookies except for Bruno have honestly been huge disappointments.

Once we lost Collins and Red Velvet we knew this team was simply broke. There's not enough real NBA talent on our roster to win games. We have now lost 10 straight games with some of those losses being the most embarrassing blowouts I've ever seen as a Hawks fan.

Really fair assessment.  The only disagreement I'd say is I think several of the players look a lot worse than maybe they would had their roles been what the team expected. For instance, the rookies look a lot worse than they would have because they are being put into situations they were never meant to be in due to JC (bonehead) and Kev's injury. Hunter and Cam were, ideally, going to be 5th or 6th options and not counted on the carry any load for this team until at least later in the season, if at all.

You mentioned Jabari and I agree he's best off the bench and going up against other teams' bench players. Also, guys like Bembry and Vince should have bit roles on an NBA team, not feature roles every night.

I also think the team just flat mis-calculated at the C position. I think they thought Len could step into that role after his 2nd half last year but that just isn't who he is. He's a backup, bench C that should get low minutes on a decent team. Frankly, this team just doesn't have a starting C unless and until JC comes back.

How many wins better would we be now instead of 4-16 with John.

With JC they are probably 8-12 or 9-11 imo. May not seem like a big difference but it's basically in the 7-9 range in the East. JC just takes a ton of pressure off of Trae plus keeps Jabari feasting off the bench rather than being exposed as a starter. Plus, JC reduces the minutes for Vince, Jones, Bruno, and Len which is never a bad thing. His bonehead decision really cost the Hawks early on.
