  1. Actually, I think Diesel is correct here. Walker was an excellent passer coming out of college as well as being known as an outstanding ballhandler. He definitely exhibited much more talent in these areas in his two years at UK then Marvin did in his one year at UNC.

Argueably Marvin is a similar prospect. Also consider Glenn Robinson, Billy Owens, Jamal Masburn, etc. All those guys were stars, well except for Owens, but none were ultimately guys you would want to build a franchise around or a championship contender.

Again Marvin may be great, but there have been legions of multi talented forwards before him who were supposed to be great but disappointed in the end.

  2. Excellent post. I think people are getting carried away by labeling Marvin as a potential superstar. He clearly is not a can't miss prospect in the LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony sense. The guy is a good athlete (not as good as Smoove) with some good skills, but he could just as easily become Billy Owens (for those that don't remember, he was an extremely talented, multi-skilled player for Syracuse that never lived up to his billing) instead of James Worthy.

Quite frankly, if he were drafted, there is no guarantee he becomes as good a player as Smoove or Harrington - both of whom will improve upon last season (Harrington because of the experience of starting for a year and Smoove because of experience).

The Hawks desperately need a center and a point guard. They are in position to address one of those needss. Both Deron and Paul have demonstrated the ability to be potential superstar point guards.

  3. Gilchrist certaintly has the physical talent to be a good pro but it is the mental part of his game which is highly suspect. Based solely on his attitude/mental faculties he is not even CBA/NBDL material.

While arm length is a factor, Paul doesnt even have a weight of 185 pounds yet he got the bar up 10 times. Further, strength does matter in basketball, especially if you are playing a post position. I bet you Shaq could get that bar up 30 times. When you are talking about a top 3 pic, you should be talking about a guy that is a stud or has stud like qualities. Bogut has none of these. he's the white Michael Olowokandi, who is going to get drafted high just because hes 7 feet and has a few skills. Bogut is not athletic, hes not strong, he hasnt played against top competition in college and he tested poorly in Chicago. We can only pray that the Bucks fall for over rated 7 footer like other teams have in the past. Otherwise, its gonna be a wasted high lottery pick for us.

Again for the record, Bogut dud more reps then beefy power forward types like May, Villaneuava, and Simien.

but felton is the better playmaker

paul may be taller and stronger, but he's not the tallest or strongest

what i said was that deron and felton have things that they are clearly the best at...whereas paul is more middle-of-the-pack in each area amongst the three

That is crazy. Paul is the best shooter, can jump higher then the others, is the youngest and is an excellent distributer.

For the record, all three timed faster in the shuttle and sprint then TJ Ford and TJ clearly was not lacking in speed.

Paul would have averaged a lot more assists per game if he had May (with his soft hands) receiving passes then Eric Williams (who has stone hands).

I can't think of any player who has as much athleticism as Warrick and just became a bust. At the least he will become a solid player like Swift. Warrick should be better than Swift since Warrick averaged over 20ppg in college while Swift barely averaged 16ppg.

There are lots of players with great athleticism who become giant flops in the NBA - Kenny "Sky" Walker, Harold Minor, Darius Miles, Jeff Trapagnier, Steven Hunter, Cedric Ceballos, Johnathan Bender, Jerrod Mustaf, Marcus Haislip, Kwame Brown, Roy Marble, etc.

Others take years to develop and are still only average - i.e., Gerald Wallace, Chris Wilcox, Nene, etc.

last year jamison got a #5 pick, and he had a horrid contract

i'd hope that al+future would get better than 13

especially since we have to take back salary to make it work...that player better be good or else we are taking on bad salary and giving up a lot for a #13...

So did Stackhouse, who went to Dallas. I like Al, but Jamison is the better player so he has more value.

Deron, or somebody else? You guys all seem to think that Marvin is the only potential superstar and yet the only knock on the guy most scouts say is the most complete PG to come out since Jason Kidd is that he is only 6'1". Sorry but I dont believe that Marvin has anymore chance to become a superstar than does Chris Paul. Not only that but Paul will actually start from day 1 and he will make our other 2 youngsters (hell probably even Al) better from day 1 as well. I am sure that most everyone remembers what Kidd did for the Nets, basically elevating the games of Jefferson and Kenyon to elite status. He made the Nets a great team. Or how about what Steve Nash did for Dallas and now Phoenix. He took both of those teams and made them MUCH better. Am I saying that Paul will do that for us next year? Of course not. We wont get that good overnight, but he will make our other young investments better, unlike what Marvin can do for them. I just dont see how you can pass that up unless its for Bogut who I dont think will be there when we pick.

    Another great post.

I could give a rats ass which player has superstar potential. Give me the guy that is going to make the team better in the long run. A good point guard or good center is the best way to do that.

Seriously, we won 13 games last year..I would hope with the number 2 pick we could select someone that could start for us..If we draft Marvin , barring a trade, he is likely to be playing behind Chillz, Smoove,, and Al..Then we still have our glaring holes at the 1 and 5 spot..The free agent point guard group is less than compelling, and the decent free agent centers are all restricted..And.......Beside all that, look at the playoffs this year..Its all about point guards and big men..Even if Marvin comes in and turns into a great sf, when is the last time a great sf carried his team to a championship?Larry Bird?..High scoring small forwards don't win you anything in the NBA..A good point guard is much more likely to lead his team to a championship than a great 3..And one more thing, the Sam Bowie over Jordan example is wore out, every GM that has ever drafted a player has passed over players that were better than the ones he drafted..

This is a great post. Jordan and Bird are the only wing players in the past 25 years to lead a team to a championship, every other time it has been a big man (Hakeem, Duncan, Shaq, Wallace x2) or point guard (Magic, Issiah).

Comparing Marvin to Jordan and Bird is crazy, they are two of the 10 best players of all time. There is absolutely no guarantee that Marvin amounts to anything more then Tim Thomas. There is no guarantee he becomes a better player then Josh Smith.

  10. I would do that trade. I think a good point guard can make Josh Smith and Josh Childress look like absolute studs - both have shown a willingness to take it to the hoop and a good point guard would create opportunities for them. This is similar to Nash's impact on Stoudamire.
