  1. On the subject of Josh, he shot 28.5% from 3 for his career and only hit 33% twice. His career as a Hawk is 15.3 pts, 8 rebs, 3.2 assists, 1.2 steals and 2.1 blocks per game. All the while he played above average defense. He was statistically one of the best Hawks of recent memory. He doesn't really get his due. His real downfall and the reason for the 3's was a decline in athleticism. His game was always based on hops. Once his knees and hips started to decline, so did he.
  2. The math....33% on 3's = 50% on 2's. 6 shots of each still = 6 points. So from a very simple metric, 33% = shooting 50% form the floor. But this does not tell the whole story. 3's lead to long rebounds which is very similar to a turnover. Point Guard drives to the basket has 2 competing results. Misses by the guard either equals an offensive rebound as the Point draws the big and leaves his big open to box out or B, pulls the point out of the big court and requires rotation to the top of the key by a guard/forward or the defensive rebound equals an outlet pass. But remember, that is only on 1/2 of shots and the results compete. But 3 pointers are misses 2/3rds of the time and typically lead to a long rebound and transition. You 35 number might even be a bit low and should be closer to 38 to 40% to even out the negative results of a miss.

Putting a little feed out for the trolls.
  4. I have a theory on this. Some college players step right in (see Trae), while others take a lot longer to get comfortable. The difference is the different offensive sets in the pros and the spacing. The Hawks offense at right now is vastly different than what he ran last year that he might honestly not know when to shoot. Shorter shot clock, rarely moving it around on the perimeter, defensive switching. It has to be very strange as a pure shooter to spot up in the NBA out of college. There is no one committed to your zone. I keep seeing him get antsy feet, like he feels like he needs to drift, but there is no need. So he just stands there waiting to spot up. I feel, he is getting caught watching. Taking in the sets visually and forgetting his role.
  5. That's gamesmanship. What Matthews did/was doing was trying to get in the rookie's head. He was just messing with him back. It was brilliant.
  6. When you see Anderson play, you'll understand why Poythress is on a two way contract. Poythress makes up for a lot of his low bbiq with energy/grit. He has the body, athleticism to be an low NBA starter but what he lacks is a feel for the NBA game. It is much faster than he processes. Attached is a highlight video of a good game from Anderson last year. Anderson is not as athletic as Poythress but all you have to watch is the first play in the video. Watch how Anderson is seeing the drive develop before it happens and positions himself to get the easy block. He has a feel for the game. Poythress is reacting to everything, even on offense. He seems surprised when he sees a shot go up and scrambles at the last second to get in position for the rebound. Not Anderson, he's positioning before the shooter ever pulls up. That's the "feel" for the game. That's BBIQ. Its why Bembry and Prince get steals in the passing lane. Poythress has always gotten by on athleticism. He has to go back and learn to be a student of the game. He shows flashes but not consistency. Here's that Anderson video.....compare him as a player.
  7. Some of us are reactionary, but like to watch the whole game before making assessments. 16 rebounds...mic drop!
  8. Doncic started out on fire but finished the game 7 for 18, 2 for 9 on 3's. His main assignments to guard tonight were Prince/Bembry/Baze. Nobody ever said Doncic can't shoot or can't use his big body effectively to get his shot off....what we said is he couldn't guard the 1/2 at the NBA level and would still struggle with the 3. Go back and watch the comeback and only focus on Doncic on defense (don't follow the ball), He got lost on defense over and over creating mismatches and lanes all through the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Doncic is going to struggle his whole career to defend. He just doesn't have the quicks. This is and will be his problem. It won't get better as he ages.
  9. Never a fan of losing on purpose. I want to win no matter what. Winning breeds winning. We have so much cap room going forward, it would be just as easy to get another piece through acquisition than the draft. Never root against your Hawks.
  10. So for those who don't speak confusing title 1. Young - 23 ppg 2. Doncic - 18.3 ppg 3. JJJ - 15.0 ppg 4. Ayton - 14.3 ppg 5. Baley - 12.7 ppg 6. Spellman - 12 ppg ... 25. Huerter - 4 ppg Assists/Game 1 . Young - 8.3 2. Doncic - 4.3 7. Huerter - 2.0 Rebounding 1. Ayton - 10.7 4. Doncic - 5.3 5. Huerter - 5.3 ... 26. Spellman - 2.0 Most turnovers 1. Doncic - 13 2 . Young - 8
  11. and we revive this thread once more. Yesterday's performance shows why the premature obituaries were short sighted and in bad taste. HOWEVER!!!! Let's slow down on the parade plans as well. This is still a very young team. This is still the NBA. Right now, film assembly of the game by Trae is going on and future opponents will now scout positions on the floor, tendencies, etc. Enjoy the moment. A win in Dallas puts us at 500 for the year but it is a very long season ahead and this pace would be nearly impossible to maintain for 82 games. Guys will need rest if constantly running like this, the defense must be improved. Injuries to either point guard would spell disaster. An injury to Prince would leave Trae in double team hell. Dedmon Collins and Anderson have yet to see the floor. We need at least 10 games to get a feeling for what the team will truly be.
  12. Doncic through 2 games 18.0 ppg, 7 rpg, 3.5 apg. 5 to/g, shooting 40.6%, 28.6% from 3. The early results on Doncic for Young are promising.
  13. After last night. Trae Young is 27th in the league in scoring, 7th in assists. Shooting 45%, 39.3% from 3. - 23.0 ppg, 8.3 apg, 2.7 t/o Dennis Schröder, 15th in assists, not on the leader board in scoring @ 14.5 ppg, 7 apg, 3 t/o 28% FG% 28.3% 3FG%
  14. To be clear...for the predictions thread...Len got to the double double first...but Trae...oh so close
  15. Actually, I kind of did. Not necessarily today but yah, this year.
  16. Tell me a story. Someone tell me the one about how we should have traded down and just drafted Colin Sexton. Someone tell me the one about how Bud was Hawks U. Oh please or Please tell me about the scary Euro trade that will haunt us for years. It is almost Halloween and all.
  17. AHEM! Self medication is not okay....even for a doctor.
  18. yep, KB and I talked predraft and he was torn on Trae...he just like JJJ long term better. He still might end up being right about JJJ (probably will). But he was never "sour" on trae.
  19. So going through the game thread for Wednesday night, I was struck by the number of over the top "OMG this team sucks" and "Bud > Pierce" themes. Its one game folks, just one game. Its just one game in a hostile environment. Its just one game, a home opener where referees routinely favor the home team (see 30-23 fouls called). Its just one game where there was a 24-15 turnover differential. Its just one game where your starting power forward and last year's starting center were out. Its just one game where 3 different Hawks under the age of 21 made their NBA debut. It was just one game. Can we at least hold off on the autopsy for 5-10 games, until the body is at least cold?
