  1. So pointing this out in the appropriate thread. The Alex Len signing is an example why rebuild (2-3 year rebuild) is a much better strategy than tanking. Len is a 1st round draft pick taken #5 overall. He plays his 5 years with Phoenix, hits 25 (just before/entering his prime) and he leaves because Phoenix takes a player 1st overall. This is how the treadmill works. He's a quality NBA level player but something prettier comes along and he no longer fits into your plans. He was an unfinished product who hadn't proven himself worthy of that 5th overall pick. He's a fine player, but became a victim of the salary cap. Scouting, scouting, scouting. He's more of a mid-first round talent (still a fine player) and needed a team dedicated to developing him. I think he's found that with us, but I digress. This right here is the problem with tanking, with 5-7 year plans. Unloading vets to get younger and better with the cap is a great idea but bottoming out a roster and not surrounding those young players with vets who can teach them the NBA game creates situations like Len. Our gain at a very reasonable price but Phoenix is paying the common price of a wasted draft pick. They've been bad since the 2012-13 season except for one winning season in 13-14.
  2. Updating the depth chart. Young/Lin/ either Dorsey/Adams/Maybe Robinson Baze/Heurter/Bembry Prince/Anderson/ Collins/Spellman/ Dedmon/Plumlee/Len 2 slots available. Need a PG and either a PF or g/f
  3. Len > Moose which is making the Dennis trade look even better now. Whats odd is Len has range but only attempted 3 three pointers last year (making 1).
  4. That seems to be the case and probably would serve as a warning to other teams as well.
  5. You know I just finished the current cap situation thread, hit send and 30 seconds later this popped up.
  6. That's as good as you're gonna get at our available price tag, our desired age range and rebounding/defensive need.
  7. I think you're spitting hairs here! I'm assuming Woj wrote it for the common fan, not with a legal description as my description is boring and doesn't read well. But that is how it happens.
  8. Nope! Because Carmelo's people were granted permission to talk with the teams he was being traded to. There is only one reason to do that, to discuss that team's intentions pre-trade so that Carmelo would be informed when the league contacted him to approve the trade. The conversation happened because A) Carmelo approving this trade was a prerequisite of the league based on his status and B) His people (agent) was in contact with any potential trade partner (which is why they asked and were granted permission). I covered this earlier but here is how it goes. The trading teams make a formal agreement (in writing) and submit it to the league. The league goes over the details of the deal to make sure it satisfies the terms of the CBA. In this case, one of those terms is Carmelo's status as a 10/5 player that gave him the right to veto any trade. The NBA then contacts the player, who in writing, agrees at that time to the league to the trade. There is no "blanket" agreement to waive his trade rights. It is in writing to the league. Any blanket agreement is a verbal agreement with the team with conditions. In this case, that his people could get an agreement from the team to waive him if it wasn't a preferred destination.
  9. Feel free to edit / update this info as information becomes available.
  10. What follows is our current cap situation. Assumptions are total salary buyout for Carmelo with no stretch, both Cleveland and Morris were waived. 12 roster slots currently in use, 3 open slots. This does not include Adams 2 way contract as it only applies based on games where he's called up (as I understand it). Committed Salary Kent Bazemore $ 18,089,887 Jeremy Lin $ 12,516,746 Miles Plumlee $ 12,500,000 Dewayne Dedmon $ 7,200,000 Taurean Prince $ 2,526,840 Justin Anderson $ 2,516,048 John Collins $ 2,299,080 DeAndre Bembry $ 1,634,640 Tyler Dorsey $ 1,378,242 Trae Young $ 5,356,320 Kevin Huerter $ 2,250,960 Omari Spellman $ 1,620,600 Subtotal: $68,254,723 Dead money: $30,232,366 Total Salary: $98,487,089 Salary Cap: $101,869,000 Cap Room: $3,381,911 Exceptions available (count against cap if used or kept unless renounced): Mid-level exception - $8,641,000 Bi-Annual Exception - $3,382,000 Luke Babbit TPE - $1,471382 Basically these 3 exceptions can be used to sign players with no risk of violating the LT (we are over $20 million below apron). So when proposing signings or trades, these are the available numbers. Total Salary: $98,487,089 Alex Len $4,146,341 New Total: $102,633,430 Salary Cap: $101,869,000 Cap Room: -$764,430 (we are no officially over the cap barring an adjustment). Exceptions available (count against cap if used or kept unless renounced): Mid-level exception - $8,641,000 Bi-Annual Exception - $3,382,000 Luke Babbit TPE - $1,471382 Note: No word yet on if an exception was used in the Len signing or where the discrepancy is that allowed the salary over the cap. Will adjust exceptions or salary when its officially released.
  11. I'm still giddy as a 50's school girl over seeing Justin Anderson's name on our roster. I'm taking the rest in stride.
  12. Whomever they get (unless someone becomes available worth the mid-level exception) isn't going to start and will be getting less than 15 minutes per game (may only play in emergencies or garbage time). This isn't something to worry about regardless of who they get. IMHO, the 3rd point spot is the contract that matters. He may play a good bit. Young can't play more than 32 mpg at this point in his career, size until he accustoms himself to the NBA game. A decent 3rd pg who plays until Lin is ready is the real concern.
  13. If you get Jahlil, you are going to get him at the bi-annual exception for 3.382 million. He'll have to compete for playing time. It is the perfect situation for him to play for a year to reprove himself.
  14. I believe Kaba is the last resort plan....he needs to play to develop. They've already said he'd be overseas this year.
  15. Consider Buddy Hield...same team 2 years earlier. As a senior. 25 ppg, 5.7 rebounds, 2 assists. He was a senior. this board went bat crap crazy over trying to get Buddy Hield in that draft. Hield's OK numbers as a Freshman.....8 points, 4 rebounds 2 assists shooting 24% from 3. But you'd pee yourself if we traded for Hield. Trae is special, potentially top 3 player special. Doncic will be a good player, potential all-star but the Hawks flipped it for generational special + 1st rounder and an additional million in cap space this year.
  16. Trae Young article from Feb 10th. https://sports.yahoo.com/forde-minutes-oklahomas-trae-young-lost-grip-player-year-002221303.html Okay so this article breaks down the difference between his first 12 games out of conference vs the next 12 games in conference. Let me ask you. 29.5ppg, 8.1 apg, 35.9% 3pt fg%. Those aren't the original numbers but they are still stellar. Now compare Oklahoma the year before Trae 11-20. 6-7 out of conference, 5-13 in conference to Trae's year, 18-14. 10-4 out of conference, 8-10 in conference. Despite the team graduating 3 seniors the year before, losing 6 players total. So 6 new roster players but they improved 7 games overall, 3 games in big-12 play. So improving the team 3 games in conference, scoring 29 points, 8.1 assists on 36% 3pt shooting in his first 12 big 12 games as a FRESHMAN is being exposed, my God I want to see your version of an allstar. He led the league in points, and assists in conference play as a freaking FRESHMAN. His actual in conference (just big 12) stats. 27.4 ppg, 8.1 apg, 4.2 rpg, 40% shooting and 33% from 3. His stats drop was from the last 6 games of conference play when he was gassed, overused. Dude I don't mind you not liking a player but at least speak the truth. Trae shot better from 3 in conference than Doncic did in Euro ball. He averaged almost 2x as many point and almost 2x as many assists in conference play than Doncic did in Euro where Sergio Rodriguez is a flipping star. Throw out his overall numbers and focus only on Big 12 play and Doncic's numbers still don't measure up. I'm so done with this stupidity. You have a potential future all-star on the roster and got another 1st round draft pick out of it. See the light.
  17. Remember this deal that the league would not approve http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/7333285/los-angeles-lakers-deal-acquire-chris-paul-off Or this baseball trade the player rejected. https://kplr11.com/2017/12/08/giancarlo-stanton-rejects-trade-to-cardinals/ or this one: http://a.espncdn.com/mlb/news/1999/1213/231893.html Notice here that Griffey gave them indications he would waive his clause but then backed out when it came time to sign the paperwork.
  18. The no trade clause explained. A team does not need a player's permission to "discuss" him in a trade. A player does need a team's permission for his agent to talk to other teams. The permission sought weeks ago wasn't "permission" for the Thunder. The Thunder went to Anthony (and his agent) and said...we need to get out from under your contract so we're either going to waive or trade you. We'd like to give you permission to seek out your own deal. We are only interested in cap relief, but we would like to know if you will give your permission and under what circumstances you'll accept a trade. Anthony and his agent laid out the rules/conditions for a trade and they talked with teams to determine his value outside of the deal (pre-looked for F/A deals) to make sure he could go to a better location. This also enables the player to negotiate his buyout with the new team. This is a separate deal that can't be submitted to the league until the trade is approved by the league (officially). They are separate deals. The new team doesn't have those rights until conveyed by the league via trade approval. Technically, Atlanta could now turn around and do the same thing OKC did but why the hell would they ruin their reputation with every agent/player in the league. The waiving of the clause happens when the team submits the proposed deal to the league. In order to be officially traded, the league will contact Anthony (and or his agent) and have him officially sign away his no-trade rights at that time. It is not a blanket waive prior to trades to empower teams. It happens during the trade approval process. Anything reported beforehand amounts to a gentleman's agreement and nothing more. A player can (and has) reject a trade at the last moment during the approval process as a negotiating ploy or a change of heart. Which is why they talk about it beforehand instead of wasting their time and energy.
  19. My biggest issue with Lin is the hair. The final determiner of this deal is whether or not the man bun rubs off on Trae. If so, we lost that trade.
  20. Dennis got into it with almost everyone on the team at one point or another. See this article: https://pistonpowered.com/2018/05/29/dennis-Schröder-detroit-pistons/
  21. If Dennis wanted to win so bad, then why did he play point guard like he was the only one on the floor. Consider this Dennis took 17.1 shots per game last year and turned the ball over 2.7 times. That is 19.8 possessions that ended with Dennis. Dennis shot 4 fta per game last year. He had 6.2 assists per game. 23.8% of Dennis possessions last year ended in an assist. 65.8% of Dennis possessions last year ended up in a shot for Dennis. 10.4% of Dennis possessions ended in a turnover. This means that 76.2% of the time, Dennis did not involve his team mates properly in the possession....is that really someone who wants to win basketball games at the point guard position? Dennis 76.2% Team 23.8% There is a reason he was not popular with his teammates. There is a reason Prince openly criticized him on twitter. https://nba.nbcsports.com/2018/05/17/are-hawks-teammates-taurean-prince-and-dennis-Schröder-subtweeting-each-other/ Dennis was not popular in the locker room and his ball hogging, me first attitude was the primary reason. There's a reason you see Prince and Bembry court side at summer league and Dennis in Germany. In 5 short years, he bumped heads with Howard, Teague, Horford, Millsap and Bud getting benched on more than one occasion. Winning basketball isn't just scoring points 1 v 1.
  22. His deal is toxic. They like him on the cheap, not at 27% of the cap for a 6th man or 4th option role.
