  1. It's funny because as a kid in the 80's, PNR wasn't run nearly as much as it is now. I read on Wiki that it came into vogue in the 90's, I'm guessing with Stock-Malone. It is now called the league's "bread and butter.". It accounted for 19% of the plays in the NBA in 04-05, I'm pretty sure it's much higher now, and I'm pretty sure we're one of the teams who run it the least. I still think Teague's jumpshot form is a reason why we don't run it as much: he releases way too low and could be easily contested by a big switching on him, along with the fact that he doesnt get some fouls he should near the rim, and some of his attempts to finish at the rim are shoddy. But surely with Al back, we should see it much more with his long strides to the hole and his already potent mid-range shot, and excellent hands for a big. They also mentioned LeBron and Ilgauskus, and they pretty much did PNR all the way to the Finals. Now if Big Z's sorry azz can make it potent, then I know Teague and Al could at least get on par with the rest of the league's success with the play.

Less Pick and Roll in th 80's....really? There was no hand check rule back then. Players were leaned on all the time. Picks were the primary way to free up a shooter. First thing you are taught in peewee basketball is to set a pick. The second thing was to call it out so your team mate didn't run flat into a big guy setting one.
  2. I figured it was the other way aroundLots of smoove lovers are anti-horford because if one has to go they don't want it to be smoove

I'm quite the opposite. I see the success of the Hawks built on Josh at the 3, Horf at the 4, true defensive / rebounding center with 2 ball handling jumpshooters. I want to play winning basketball and to me that is playing pick and roll with Al, Josh moving without the ball. Offense based on using big men to draw doubles, with 2 long range shooters to make them pay. Defense based on owning the glass, owning the lane. I see JJ on this team as expendable simply because his game is diametrically opposed to this philosphy. Give me Duhon/Rubio, Al, Josh and the true defensive presence at the 5. Josh is my favorite player in the NBA but I'm not stupid...Al is a winner.
  3. I think you are thinking of the earlier incarnation of illegal defense where players had to be on the same side of the court as their defensive assignment no matter what. The current incarnation just means you can't stand in the lane for more than 3 seconds unless you are within arms reach of your assignment but you can send you entire team in there as long as they reset every 2.9 seconds.I will give you that the Celts have been a lil iffy though because I noticed two games ago during an offensive possession where Joe was isoing on the opposite side of the court and Marv keep looking at the official and pointing at Pierce because he was 15 feet off of him and camped with a foot in the lane for most the possession but the official just shrugged and kept looking away. It's the Celts though, their entire defense and offense is predicated on being a fraction below and over what is legal or illegal. You see it in their moving screens, their borderline fouls, their travelling, their overloading entire sides with little respect to the key and holding guys when they try to get around screens. The thing is that they spend all season doing it so refs call it differently and just explain it away as vet moxy.

No, I'm using modern illegal D. Remember these are all highlights (all I could find on short notice) but in 3 of the possessions, Pierce is circling inside the lane following the ball without guarding anyone. In one, he's guarding Marvin who runs to the corner and Pierce is still in the lane with 2 other Celts while JJ has the ball at the 3 point line.
  4. The 2 most likely to trip people up and have us laughing. 1.Trade kickers are paid by the team trading the player. (changed from receiving team - imagine the hawks paying 3 million to drop a player)2. Non-taxpaying teams can receive in trade 150% plus $100,000 (when trading $0 to $9.8 million), 100% plus $5 million (when trading $9.8 million to $19.6 million), and 125% plus $100,000 (when trading more than $19.6 million). - from a flat 125% +100K for all transactions. This bit of math is going to make someone's head detach.

  5. I've been kind of quiet on this subject because I don't like sounding like a whiner but has anyone else noticed that the Celts pack the lane in an obvious illegal defense fairly regularly and it isn't called?

  6. I agree on the top 3 potential. This guy could truly be our best player. Josh gets criticized on this board because he doesn't play to his position while Joe gets criticized because he can't get past his defender and draw fouls. Jeff doesn't have the flaws that our best two players have, he is a point GOD! He can be our best player as soon as next year. That is why even if Josh does leave, I will look forward to how Teague developes, and if he truly does take the next step next year we should be contenders with Joe as a second option and Horf as a third option.

There was an assist from Teague to Dampere in the 2nd quarter last night that exemplifies exactly what I meant by "better decision within 15 feet. Damp was open there for about 2 seconds but Teague was dribbing with his head down. If he correct this, our offense would be light years improved.
  7. Can we please change the title to this thread? It's so stupid that we have to have members defending our own players (Horford mainly). If he could play, he would. Just last year, he was the guy that made the free throws to win a game after the hard foul from Griffin. He also showed his heart in the game at home against Chicago when we were down 15-2 or so?

Those are just a couple quick memories while I type. Do our fans even care about our players?

This thread should be about Smith and his injury updates. Instead I see a few guys defending our players because some people think Horford or even Smoove are soft? Seriously?

If there is a new update about Josh playing Friday, hopefully somebody makes a new thread. Until then, get well soon Smoove, Boss and Zaza. Some of us do appreciate ALL of you.

And that should be the sentiment of the entire board.
  8. Or Al could sit 2 extra weeks. We could find a way to get past the Celtics and Al could be much better in the 2nd round. Or Al could come back now, help us get by the Celtics but coming back could ruin our chances of going deeper.

  9. I've been the same asshole that I am now since long before 06 and that includes being a grammar "Nazr" as I prefer to say it... and my comments regarding the use of the word "Dominate" in this thread extend to many others than yourself NBAS.

Don't sell yourself short. There's always room to improve on being an A'hole. My biggest grammar and spelling pet peeves are loose being use for lose and there being used for their and they're
  10. But again...Between 4th and 16 in every category...top5 in FG %, etc. He's a top 15 point guard right now by the numbers. It is not a stretch on my part to say if he worked on those 4 previously mentioned categories that he could be top 3. Improved outside shot, better free throws would up his personal and team scoring, better decision making within 15 feet (ie eyes up) would increase team scoring and lower team t/o improving our win% as a team. Sometimes I wonder if you even read other people's posts before responding.

  11. He is in a PG dominate system with the ball in his hands a lot. He been given more shots than most PG's. I don't take stats all that serious when I watch the games and he looks average more times than not. There are so many PG's who are better than Teague and will always be better than Teague. He is not 10th in scoring. WTF kind of numbers are you posting. He is not even in the top 17 in that category. In fact most of the shit you posted is wrong. Man, if you don't stop wasting my time talking about this nobody. KG was right, Teague is a nobody. A clown. A scrub. He didn't lead this team, he was just a part of it. If we had a real PG or one who was really good, we would actually be contenders. He nothing more than Anthony Johnson in Indiana for the Pacers in his prime. An average player in a ball dominate system. Darrell Armstrong lite.

It is not wrong. Here: http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/stats/byposition?pos=PGTell me I'm wrong again. You seriously are hard to deal with. Filter by PG....then click any category, count down from the top till you see Teague.
  12. <--- Worlds biggest Josh Smith Homer!!!! Everyone know this. Remember who is saying this right now!

We didn't lose the game when Josh went out. We didn't lose the game on the ghost foul calls, Twin going out or Al/Zaza not playing.

We didn't lose the game because Marvin was tentative with his shot and shot for crap when he did. We didn't lose this when the bench came in or when the Celtics got physical.

We lost this game with 8:48 to go in the first quarter. Here watch it again.

This is the playoffs. You take the free two points and get back on D. This isn't the regular season. Teams that win in the regular season whip up the fans with an electric dunk. Teams that win in the post season dunk it for 2. Teams that win it all score two points and point to the scoreboard.

I love Josh. He is my favorite player since Mookie and Willis. But this is the playoffs Josh. If the crowd had a good time, if you made sportscenter, if go head band or not only matters in the regular season. All that matters in the playoffs is scoring more than the other guys. You want to get the crowd excited. It isn't the dunk, the head band, the flash. Go up 20-6 in the first quarter against Boston and the fans will be in a frenzy. Score the 2 first Josh. You are a pro and you cost us this game. I knew it with 8:48 to go in the first quarter.

  13. Bottom 5 starting PG's:D. CollisonTeagueKembaSessionsChalmers

LOL you base that on what?Teague is currently among PG's10th in Scoring, 16th in assists,16th in rebounds4th in steals,Meanwhile 15 starting point guards have more turnovers than he does.2nd in blocksHis team has the 4th best record in the east without Horford and the rest of our issues. 1st full year as a starter.Yes, I am confident in saying that if he worked on the 4 things above, he could be top 3 and if not he would be a backup in 3-5 years. There is nothing controversial about that statement whatsoever. However, your opinion that he sucks doesn't make him sucking be fact.
  14. Honestly if we make him the man would we be that much worse off? LD should just give him the green light and let him loose. We all know what we are going to get or not going to get from JJ and Josh. He appears to have that dog in him and that killer instinct.

What Jeff needs to work on before "the reins" are his.Jeff needs a pull up jumper of 15-18 feet. Enough to make middle defenders have to step up into him. He can't just go to the basket every time.Jeff needs better decision making between 15 feet to the basket. Far too often Jeff just goes to the rim and tries to score forgetting he should be drawing and dishing 70% of the time. His offense at the basket is a threat, not option 1. Twice last game Jeff split the D at 20 feet, got into the middle of the lane. 1 went for a basket, 1 did not. The second was a basket if he dropped it off after Garnett challenged.Jeff needs to work on his release on his deep, midrange jumper and he should be sleeping with a Ray Allen highlight video playing on tv while he dozes. Jeff's hands flare straight out, the wrist is flat, the elbow moving forward through the release. The ball is not rotating for shooters touch or arc out of his hands due to this.Jeff needs to work on his form shooting free throws. He is too quick and direct in free throw shooting. See above. Not enough arc, touch, wrist is flat, elbow is projecting forward. If Teague improves in these 4 areas, IMO he could be a top 3 point in the league. If he doesn't, he'll be a backup in 3-5 years when the speed normalizes.

  15. If only Al were dealing with Chrons or trying to come back from an Achilles tear, which BTW would have kept him out the entire year as well, then you MIGHT have sound room to talk here but you're not a doctor and you have no private knowledge of his medical condition. You're just trying to go out of your way to throw dirt on a player who has busted his butt in college and in the pros and is dealing with an injury that other professional athletes have had and have also had their seasons end from it. But yeah, we should totally listen to you and dog Al for this.

Sorry Dolf, but I have to disagree here. I too suffer with something terrible. Every day I wake up, log on to Hawksquawk and get this extreme sharp pain in the fold of flesh where my upper legs meet. My head throbs from reading comments on here and no amount of Preparation-H can dull the pain in my rear it is to listen to Hawksquawkers complain. Yet I log on everyday and even manage to go the extra mile and mash out a comment or two with absolutely no pay. The least Al can do is go out for 32 minutes a game dodging KG elbows, the paid headhunting of Hollins, getting shoved in the back to the ground by Bass risking a career ending injury and our chances in further rounds should we get there to satisfy my need to feel superior to inbred Bostonians. C'mon Horf...man up and take one for the fans on the Squawk.

  16. Smoove is a top 15 player this season. He will never get his praise due to his offensive IQ but his defense is top 3 in the NBA.

Offensive IQ isn't just about the shots a player takes. Finding the open man when you have the ball. Recognizing mismatches, etc.One of the things Josh brings to the table that goes unnoticed on this board is his recognition of when another player is in trouble. One of the reasons Josh gets the ball so often on the bailout is that he rotates to the ball when Joe is in trouble. Another is how often Josh comes back when the press is on to get the in bounds pass when the guards are being watched. Offensive IQ is many more things than deciding to shoot jumpers. An interesting thing about "those jumpers". when they fall and they have been with more frequency since the 2nd half of the season, it stretches the defense is many ways. This opens up offensive rebound opportunities as Josh's man is the opposing PF who is out of position to box out. Now, I would prefer he get his opportunities on cuts, posts etc but if you read Doc's comments after game 1, he was commenting on how he was upset Josh's jumpers weren't contested in the first half. That, would make my day. Contest the hell out of Doc. pull Garnett or Bass away from the basket.
