Not my argument. My argument centers around the previous arguments I had over this subject. I said back then that JJJ was better than Ayton, Bamba, and Bagley. Many argued that he was the 4th big among that group. I was right.
Yes, he did. He accepted my arguments for Trae at the time. He preferred JJJ over everyone else but was accepting of Trae as the pick.

Yup, that's why you rarely see me argue with posters on trade proposals. You have no idea what your team will do in relation to the LT. LT can get out of hand quick. This is why I think a trade package that saves Phoenix money, gives the a cheap asset or two can work.

Trades can be completed Jul 6th. You won't hear much about trades (including rumors) until the 3rd through the 5th.
Due to the size of his deal, I would expect other teams to start fleshing out their rosters and DH/Capela movement would probably happen end of next week (8th/9th) at the earliest. Could happen faster or not at all but probably not until the biggest fish are caught 5th-7th.

NY was rumored to want to pick our roster dry. Some writer proposed DH for Hartenstein and Toppin + pick. I had to think about it. I wasn't against it. Wasn't chompin. I could see them wanting Clint as well.
I'd prefer not to weigh in on "who" wanted "who" because there was so much talk and its hard to determine what was serious and what was leverage.

You said.. IF COLLINS BLOW UP in UTAH AND IF JJ FAILS HERE that we STILL MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE.
IF you would like to sigh about something, sigh about this... That's the Kool Aid drinkers punch. Money over Winning is what I see here. Tell me how it's not.
You want to talk about Net Negatives. What has DeAndre Hunter Been? The problem with shipping JC off for nothing my friend is that there were several other moves we could have done before we got to this one. That would have made more sense and would have recouped us better value.
Moreover, back to your original statement. If Collins does Blow up in Utah, I believe that the correct diagnosis would be that we have been using him wrong.. which is something that everybody but statwatchers can see. You care to tell us what happened after those two years of his career that he was a net positive? Of course not, it requires dialogue about how our team has been set up.
Here's the prediction for you camp... JC = Allstar next year.
While we will sit here with financial solvency and using our TPE on Dario Saric or somebody. Mark it down.
You realize JC plays the same position as Markannen?
25 players in the western conference that played power forward had a higher PER than Collins last year.....just helping you keep it real.

Let me put my prediction out there. The TPE is going to be used to get us to 15. We just need 15 warm bodies. Let me describe the next player for you.
Salary = less than 7.3 Million.
That's it.
Hell it can be a trade for 2 players. Salary less than 7.3 Million.
Don't get me wrong, that can fetch us somebody useful..
Like
Jonathan Kuminga. GS needs to drop some salary. And instead of just not picking up his team option, they may get some second round picks out of us for him.
I mentioned Franz Wagner... simply because I am fearful of the truth of us going after Cole Anthony.
Finny Smith and Royce Oneal make too much.. but Patty Mills is in our wheelhouse.
Payton Pritchard is out there too.
I just want to temper you with the truth. The truth is that this was a salary dump. We're not looking to take on too much salary... so get ready for us to get a JHoli/AHoli kind of pick up with the TPE.
We have other exceptions. We wouldn't blow the TPE just to get to 15.
I think everyone on this board would take Payton Pritchard to replace Aaron Holiday

Gotcha...
Audible sigh. Hey wait, does that reaction count as histrionics?
We had Collins, we were not a championship club. Nothing in his metrics or trends points to him being a championship type player. He was a net negative last year and has been all but 2 years of his career. That makes his impact average, not championship quality. That can't be your 2nd highest paid player. It just can't.
I suggest you pour one out for Collins and move on.

This!!! When tanking, a number of us begged for a pivot, not a tank. This is why. Yes we got Trae, but Cam, Huerter, Collins now all gone. Most NBA Champs don't tank their way there. Culture, development, savvy trades.

I think the important thing to realize is they didn't just clear up $23 million this year. This deal gives them increasing flexibility for 3 years. John was the 2nd highest paid player and commanded 17% of the cap. No progress possible with that hanging over their heads. If he blows up in Utah and Jalen lays an egg, I'll stick to my guns and say this was the right move, right now.

Forget about him, he declined his $13 million PO, how much do you think he's asking for.
Kyle Kuzma is expected to be one of the hottest names on the market this summer after declining his $13 million player option for 2023-24 to become a free agent.
Whichever team hopes to land the former Washington Wizards star will have to cough up a lot of money with the 27-year-old eyeing $30 million annually on his next contract, according to Matt Moore of Action Network.
He's going to sign for 4 years $15m per (ish)

Some JC stats
Year DRTG (lower is better) +/- 2017-18 107.8 -217 2018-19 114.6 -76 2019-20 112.2 -165 2020-21 112.4 183 2021-22 113.4 36 2022-23 115.3 -21 On the topic of "why John was traded." He only had 2 years with a positive +/-, his defensive rating has been in steady decline for 4 years.
Jalen's defensive rating last year, 112.5 (heavily shaded by his rough Nate inspired start and still finished only -10).

For those still wondering about this move, refer back to this post. See "bigs giving marching order to be able to guard 3 positions", "Players targeted need to be able to guard 3 positions, create turnovers, change of possession."
Riddle me this....does that sound like JC since the finger injury to you?

Furthermore, if it's not obvious to all, the TPE (key word "traded") can only be used in a trade. You can't buy free agents with it.

One point of speculation nobody has mentioned (that I saw) was does this open up time for OO at the 4 and Bruno as the backup 5?

This is less a Clint vs Ayton and more of an Ayton has never really been very good issue. Theoretically, he can play away from the basket. He's another mid range guy who doesn't shoot threes and isn't very efficient on the shots he does take. He had big regression this year in his defense as well, and I don't see him as a guy who can guard on the perimeter at all.
IMHO, he's overpaid. If he were making $20 million a year he'd be considered a steal and that's the rub. It isn't Ayton = bad, it's Ayton hasn't earned being paid $32 million.

At worst, JC and JJ = same impact, but JJ has more impact and needs the playing time.
JC = $23.9 million in salary
JJ = $2.9 million in salary
Same production (at least) for $21 million less. By the end of the season, all the crocodile tears will dry up.

Love to.
When you come off the bench, you have the luxury of playing against guys who didn't game plan for you. Normally, you are lesser known because you're coming off the bench. Moreover, you're catching starters that are tired and you're catching 2nd stringers who you may be better than. So it's EASY to look good when you come off the bench. It's hard to "keep that same energy" when you start.
One place where you can see a measurable difference is "the playoffs". In a playoff series, the other team gets to do some advanced scouting. They get to game plan for all 12 players. Somebody ( @thecampster) said that JJ crushed JC this past season. However, what happened in the playoffs?
The eye test was no better.
But we're going to be put in a situation where we will play JJ. We're hoping he's our Draymond but he better get in the weight room.
I said last 30 games.

Getting 2x as many assists, 3x as many steals, 4x as many blocks, 50% more rebounds.....you're doing more to turn the tide...simple as that. most games come down to a few possessions....those plays matter....being active matters. Many times those last 30 games, JC was very inactive which is why his rebounding numbers continue to fall, his block/steals numbers fall. JC creates "zero" defensive chaos.

9 minutes ago, AHF said:The trade exception can't be combined with anything but picks so if you traded it with Gay that would be two separate deals - one for the exception and one for Gay. That isn't unusual but just pointing out that we can't combine the exception with another player to get someone worth more than $25M or anything. (Unless I am remembering incorrectly how these work which is always possible.)
- Trade exceptions created in non-simultaneous trades can’t be combined with one another, with other exceptions, or with a player’s salary; they can’t be used to sign a free agent (except in a sign-and-trade); and they can’t be traded outright to another team.
So with the above. You can send cash, draft picks or rights. But you can't send a signed player. So Gay + $8,000,000 of the exception does not work for another player. But future picks + exception = Rui/Kuzma or other. The salary difference is baked in so its not exception+ a %....that % is already baked in.
However, you can do the trade with a 3rd team, or 2 trades to make it work. So currently we're over the cap. But if a similar salary dump happens (holds waived, rights to non-guarantees waived) and then Clint finds a new home, you are under the cap and could make this happen. It's not ideal but dropping Collins isn't done in a bubble.
But again, if I had to bet money, they're planning to sign a 3 and D free agent and use the extension in a sign n trade or similar trade for someone else's cap problem. This was about executing a trade for Collins in 2 steps, not 1.

My personal opinion (just an opinion) is they're considering throwing that exception or at least a good bit of it at Rui Hachimura or Kyle Kuzma but that's just my speculation.

A $25.4 million exception (which can be split), meaning Atlanta doesn't have to send additional player compensation (but probably would non-guarantees) and could send draft capital instead. Simplifies the trade from Phoenix's end. Phoenix needs that cap relief.

1 thing to consider....
Statistically speaking, the last 30 games, Jalen Johnson wiped the floor with JC stats wise, effectiveness wise, defensively vs his man.

1 minute ago, Hawkish said:thecampster — Why do you think we are so insistent on acquiring Ayton while also preaching about culture, values, humility, etc.?
Ayton is a big, offensive threat we don't have. He is also able to operate outside the lane. If you can believe it, our offense gets miles better with him on the floor because he can step out farther than the 5 feet Clint could. Way more room for Trae/DJM to operate, room for cutters if he's the Center and every bit as terrifying in a lob situation. Offensively, we could easily be tops in the NBA with a little bit of 3 point shooting.
Defensively he's physically bigger than Clint. Clint = better help defense against penetration. Ayton = no longer just getting abused by every big bruiser. Ayton's physical size and ability to slide his feet means much less movement on defense, length to cover/recover on pick n roll. He's not perfect and if we acquired him we'd be banking on change of scenery, maturity.
Like everyone I have motor questions. But I also know Clint has missed an average of 15 games per season the last 3 years, all of which have affected our win %, playoff positioning. Clint misses on average 18% of games. Ayton hasn't performed better but there are concerns from my end about Clint's long term health, size, post defense, effectiveness against bigger bigs.

5 minutes ago, AHF said:It is totally fair to say that we need to see the full offseason before judging. But I think to marry these two posts the activity going forward needs to include something that really moves the needle and not just minor moves to finish off the roster if people are going to feel differently about this deal.
Like getting rid of salary in order to land Dikembe Mutombo felt great. Getting rid of Huerter for Justin Holiday and extras felt pretty terrible.
I don't actually see the exceptions if you posted them.
