I don't come here to fight, but I do enjoy when there are fights.   You guys can't see it because I'm on a computer, but after I read that inflammatory post I  shouted out "WORLD STAR" and then I hit like.

A very common topic in most college business programs is the danger of group think.  The internet is the giant vat of group think. People tend to sit in their group thought bubbles and only listen to things they agree with and then venture out to expose others to those thoughts. They are so used to only hearing 1 real point of view that they aggressively attack opposing view points and cheer loudly when others agree. It's become so extreme on the internet that when people are being disrespectful or rude, they don't realize it because they see the person they are in disagreement with as diametrically opposed to reason.

I remember a graph in one of my classes about this that the more isolated a group becomes, the farther from center they move, the less likely they are to see points of agreement, the more all or nothing their points of contention become. This happens on both ends of the spectrum. The farther from center you move, the less exposed to information you become and by extension the less educated.

Fandom falls into this category on a 30 points from center.  The more a fan of the Hawks you are, the less likely you are to be informed on players across the league. The more of a basketball generalist you are, the less likely you are to be engaged with the nuanced feelings of your favorite team.  I think because this is the internet, people find themselves arguing from a point of view that isn't appropriate to who they are arguing with.  Their perception of what is typed is affected by their worldview and they get angry or joyful when its not exactly how they interpreted it.

First, claps on the great content in these posts.  Much appreciate you bringing the discussion and detail behind your thoughts.  Wanted to say that up front so as not to give the impression that my one minor quibble represents me pushing back hard on the "real" thrust of the posts.

Second, my one minor quibble is with the above statement as it applies to the very best players.  Because there are maximum salaries, some of the best deals from a value perspective in the league are the contracts for S level players.  If the salary cap was $100M and you had prime LeBron as a FA under a CBA that did not contain maximum salaries, you might find teams willing to pay $60M to get prime LeBron because he is that valuable.  Because his contract is capped at $30M, you are capturing a ton of value.  That is contrast to someone like Gobert or Joe Johnson who gets paid at or sometimes a bit above a number that would quantify the value they bring on the floor.  So your superstar players represent fantastic value and make team building for a championship roster easier by capping out their pay at a level below what their production would merit as free agents under a CBA with no maximum salary restrictions.

No I 100% get that and agree...hence why I said teams know and accept it because the oddity of the S/A level players is their ability to take over. Its so hard to quantify.

  3. I've been following the Amber Heard/Johnny Depp trial and its really struck me how she promised donations and got away with not following through.

Good on Knox for giving back to those that helped him along.  Its a nice story, and reminds us there's more to being an athlete, a star, a politician than just getting fame and fortune. Its what you do with it that spells out who you are.

  4. How about something positive for a change?

After months of construction, Tampa Catholic faculty and donors were able to tour their basketball cathedral this week. The Kevin Knox II Field House, named after the NBA free agent who starred for the Crusaders, is a $6-million project that includes a new gymnasium, state-of-the-art fitness center, Hall of Fame Pavilion, Champions Hall, coaching suites, video scoreboard, men’s and women’s locker rooms, bleachers and concessions.

It was paid for in part by a $2 million donation from Knox II, along with contributions from other donors. The lobby includes murals that pay homage to Knox II and the student section, known as the Green Locos. The court will be dedicated in today’s ceremony to longtime basketball coach Don Dziagwa, who also serves as the school’s athletic director.

  5. Here, let me show you 2 images.

1st image is Josh Childress - #6 overall in 2004

Second is Jalen Johnson's rookie photo

Knowing nothing other than both players were drafted at a similar position, height and weight.  Look at their shoulders, neck, arms.  Who would you say was a better draft selection.

People should go back to that 2004 draft and wonder what the hell were we thinking.  Taken after Childress but before Josh Smith  - Luol Deng, Iggy, Biedrins, Humphries, Al Jefferson.

I’m really disappointed in the way Cam turned out so far. It’s soooo early that I’m sure he’s gonna find some nitch in the league being a specialist if he’s lucky. But man, how does someone with his talent level just become a specialist and that’s now probably his ceiling, at best.

From he himself saying all that he saw when he looked in the mirror was a star ⭐

    to..

    Robert Covington ceiling hopes.. sad.

ps I still have his first Hawks jersey I got a month or two after the 2019 draft.. ugh.. high hopes fell again. First Marvin then Cam.

Oh I think he's on the Julius Randle / Bobby Portis track.  Randle just didn't "get it" until late 20's then bam. Portis flipped a switch from gonna get mine to just gonna get filthy.

Cam has too much talent to not figure it out eventually.
