  2. Its important for attribution and legal compliance when quoting. Plus the guy makes a living writing that stuff. Its only right to share the link to give him a chance to make a dollar or two.
  3. From Kirschner's Athletic article yesterday afternoon. https://theathletic.com/3274544/2022/04/27/atlanta-hawks-loss-trae-young/ " A shakeup has to be coming ... The clearest way Atlanta will look to improve is through a trade. Collins has to be considered the likeliest person to move, because the Hawks just don't have high-level trade pieces to dramatically improve the roster. Its Collins or Capela, and it wouldnt be surprising to see both elsewhere, even though they're each meaningful players for the Hawks. Hunter, who had his best game of the season in Game 5, scoring 35 points, was below-average for most of the season. Your'e likely not getting quality back if Hunter is the main piece of a trade right now ... Bogdanovic will be 30 at the start of next season ... Gallinari is an interesting player to monitor because of his contract situation (his deal next season is only partially guaranteed) but likely will end up being a cap casualty anyways. ... The Hawks need more proven talent on the roster. That much is clear. They need better ballhandlers, better perimeter defenders, better role players, better vets, better leadership. "
  4. It was one of their standard out of bounds sets. Nate announced it to them as they huddled. Trae knew what he was supposed to do just from the name on the play. He got it, sat down. Gallo stepped in front of him and blocked Trae from the huddle. But Trae knew the play. OO did not know what he was supposed to do and was mostly stagnant. Trae started to run to his separation spot (through the place OO stepped in to). Trae ran into OO's back killing option 1. So it went to option 2, Gallo in the corner who was immediately swallowed up. Trae knew the play, OO did not because he's almost never in late in games. It was a synopsis of the whole series in one play. The injury to Bogi, CC and Collins blew up any chance we had in this series. Through all 5 games, personnel units not used to playing with each other on the floor were in together a lot. With reduced minutes for each of the above, groupings not used to playing together were evident. There was a play in game 3 where Huerter drove a curl into the middle of the lane and kicked to Collins for a wide open 3. It looked like the Hawks all season one possessions Trae took a breather. That's the Hawks with consistent personnel. Game 4, Trae called for high screen and roll with OO. OO came up to set the pick. Huerter floated to the right corner which is natural in this set. Wright came baseline and ran to the same spot as he expects Bogi to be chasing him to the left corner (he was not in). In this set, Trae took the pick and drove right. OO bounced off the pick to his left, Trae's right. Both kept moving at Huerter with Wright ending up right behind OO. All 4 players (and their defenders) ended up with 5 feet of each other bunched in the right corner. Gallo (the 5th on this play), didn't roll behind it but floated to the left 3/4 circle, completely out of the play, out of line of sight and impossible to get the pass. This allowed all Miami defenders to occupy the space between the elbow, the baseline under the basket and the right corner. All from personnel group mismatching and a complete misunderstanding offensively on how to beat the 2-3 zone.
  5. If I were them, I would be moving down, consolidating those selections. With 2 2nds and 2 3rds + the 8th pick, a good GM could turn this into 3 1st round picks 1 2nd, 1 3rd. There is also the matter of trading Ridley's rights which could happen on draft night. I'm hyper aggressive though and I see this as a very, very good draft to build all the positions that glue a team together. I'm also hoping we can squeak Zeus in there somewhere round 4 or later. I think he'd be a steal that late.
  6. The response from Aaron from Milwaukee, " Hey buddy! I am so sorry I just now saw this email. Yes actually I agree with the article. I do believe the officiating in general is this whole series has been unfair to the Hawks. I believe Trae has been officiated unfairly all season. Same with James Harden. The officials have made an conserted effort not to call fouls because of how great Trae is at getting to the line. There is definitely a bias. Thanks Aaron "
  7. This will probably be my last post as "an insider". Do not shoot the elected messenger. So a huge disclaimer before this gets posted. A few weeks before the play in, I lost 2 of my 3 sources. The 3rd guy has been spot on the last year or so with info but its hard for me to say “stuff I’ve heard” when its only coming from 1 guy. I had a talk with the both of the other 2 before their tenures where they were came to a final close (nothing bad, moving out and up in the world), and they downloaded the chatter they’d heard as a final goodbye. A short time after that, Sothron, Supes and I revived our rumor chat and many of the things I was told they had been hearing. Some of it was shared on the board. What follows is greater than speculation, not yet rumor, some hotter than other. Lastly, a decision was made not to discuss some of it openly as the playoffs has changed more players’ futures than Gatorade. What follows is the summation of conversations held early in April. I'll talk less about incoming players. Expect the other 2 guys to chime in later with their targeted players getting buzz. The trade deadline – ownership and other stakeholders were very unhappy about the dealing around the trade deadline. They wanted consolidation trades and couldn’t swing anything. There was a feeling around the league the Hawks were dangerous and no one wanted to help. But, there was also a feeling that everything the Hawks wanted to do was a swindle. Our players were valued greater as a whole than as individuals. Ownership is eager to shake things up. Specifically, to get bigger around Trae. Clint – Management likes Clint but they do not see him as defensively dominant enough to put around Trae. They see him as good and serviceable but a better fit on a team bigger at the 2/3/4. They feel he is not getting the help he needs. We either move Clint for a dominant center or will upgrade all 3 positions between him and Trae for size. Collins – Management loves John the person. Management also thinks John is a better fit next to a dominant center or elsewhere. John is not strong enough, big enough and is hurt too much to put next to Trae and Clint. They know his athleticism will fade. Bogi – Management is very frustrated with his injury situation. Mad at their medical staff for clearing him. Bogi’s knee issues are suspected to be degenerative and will need to be managed. Bogi’s defense is opportunistic but a net negative in its own right. He is a terrible fit next to Trae. Huerter is not the long term answer and will eventually be on the bench but his defensive fit next to Trae was a necessity. If Bogi plays hard defense 1 night, his knee makes him useless the next….This is why Huerter is starting and why Bogi is the number 1 person on the trading block. Gallo – The team loves everything Gallo brings. They do not love it $21 million worth. Gallo is a financial decision they tried to make at the trade deadline and got mediocre interest at best. A decision was made to waive or trade him in the coming offseason and the team isn’t happy about it. They love him but he just isn’t worth $20 million + a year at this stage of his career. Cooper – Cooper openly complained about his role and opportunities. He may not be back and could be packaged. Wright – The Hawks love everything about him. For a player the team thought they made a mistake on 10 games in, he is now solidly a Hawk. They can’t overpay him and he may take the money elsewhere (he’s played himself onto a number of rosters now), but the Hawks want to bring him back. TLC – If the price is right. Hunter – Hunter complained openly about touches and the end of the season was all about him proving he could hold on to the ball and be effective. The jury is out. He improved but is not efficient. The offseason will be big for Hunter and he could be included in a trade deal to get a true star 2 to put next to Trae. The team wants 3 things in the offseason. 1) To get bigger, more physical. This starts at both Center and PF. The Hawks will be shopping. 2) The team wants a solid #2 scorer/ball handler. 3) To utilize their draft capital and multiple assets to consolidate bringing in 2 stars. Either 2 elite bigs or 1 elite big and 1 elite 2. The team is very interested in trading out of this year’s draft and using their pick to upgrade. This entire offseason is about getting players who will help them punish teams that double/trap Trae. Nate isn’t going anywhere this season. He doesn’t like his team’s personal identity and has worked with management to address it this offseason. Expect moves. Everyone is on board. If you see the Hawks make a move for either Ayton, Gobert (or even A.Davis), then that is just the first domino to fall. Clint, John, Dre, Bogi, Gallo, Cooper could all have a new address next season and we could easily not have a draft pick. 5 out, 3 in is very likely.
  8. These guys use their bodies to bump drives, cut off the lane and never get a call on it.
  9. I'm getting really tired of seeing Miami chuck our guys moving around screens and not getting called. Tucker and Adebayo move up onto the body and hip check, shoulder check our guys fighting over the screen every time. Freaking call something.
  10. I don't have it in me to explain how a 2-3 and 1-3-1 zone impacts a penetration dependent offense. If you cant google it, I cant help you.
  11. That foul by Dedmon is the stuff I was talking about in my officiating post. This crew won't let that continue. Challenge them inside.
  12. So there is one thing you may not be thinking of. You're saying Gobert vs Ayton. It is never that simple. The cost to acquire Gobert < the cost to acquire Ayton....for the very reasons you point out. It isn't just a matter of cap but also a matter of cap + assets since most of this maneuvering will be done via trade, not signing. So the less you give up to swap out Clint for a more imposing center, the more you have in capital to go after another team's wing. With the cap going up and all of the players we're talking about having fixed salaries for a while it is safe to say a trade that lands us in the LT will probably only land us in the LT for 1-2 years, not cap hell. Also, part of this scenario is A) the money we're paying Lou and B) the expected money we pay an incoming mid level 1st round pick. Any player at 16 isn't expected to contribute right away, so I can see it being moved as part of the deal. That's another $3.5 million in salary you may not be accounting for as is Lou's 5 mil. The get Ayton and 1 other star concept is built around consolidation of salaries to a set 10 man rotation and then vet mins for people trying to catch on for a ring chase. Our current build is 1 Star 4 solid starters. The new build will be 3 stars, 1 solid, 1 take a chance starter and then ring chasing vets on the bench. There is money for that, the question is which build. Which new center (or elite PF) and which wing. Bringing in 2, 4 outgoing....fill in the other 2 slots with serviceable vets.
  13. In the video, you can see how the refs set up. Talking about "nuances of the game". The players are aware of these things as well. Take the fouls, baiting that Lowry has been doing. The players know how the refs are running up the court, when their backs are turned, etc. They know when they can get away with BS. Its a fine point in the game and part of the rookie vs vet mentality. Learning what's coming in the playoffs because players pull out all the stops. And the refs know this too and do things to try and limit it....its a constant NBA cat and mouse. One coach on each bench tasked with calling out to the refs to watch what's going on behind the play and trying to get them to turn around. Anticipate the shenanigans.
  14. So any takeaways from this, this is the most friendly officiating crew we've seen so far. Some quick whistles, quick technical fouls and dislikes of tight, handsy play. I full expect Zarba to get an earful from Spoelstra tonight. Might want to watch this before the game, its insightful.
  15. Zach Zarba - Young official to be considered the crew chief in a playoff elimination game....hmmm. Notorious quick whistle who doesn't like tight play. Reticent to change the outcome of plays via replay. Players are highly critical of him on numerous occasions. Bill Kennedy - Seasoned official with a notorious quick whistle and a quick hook. Very quick with a technical and ejections. Games are typically higher scoring when he officiates, calling more and 1's and more shooting fouls per capita. Mitchell Ervin - Very average NBA rep with little reputation around the league with players or coaches either positive or negative. However, there is this notable moment. Atlanta @ Miami Zach Zarba (#15) Bill Kennedy (#55) Mitchell Ervin (#27) Kevin Cutler (#34)
  16. I think the Gobert change isn't made in a bubble. I think its wrapped around a few things (listed below). All salaries are based off 2022-23 assuming all trades would happen post moretorium. Capela - $19.7 million cap figure Collins - $23.5 million cap figure Gallo - $21.45 million cap figure ($5 million if waived). Bogi - $18 million cap figure. #16 pick - $3.5 million Total - $86.15 million. Think of this like Tetris with Gallo being the straight 4 block piece. It doesn't matter how they all fit as long as they end up adding up to something close to $86.1 million and 5 players. Also in this mix is Hunter who is due a new contract but makes $10 million. IMHO - All 6 of these assets + Cooper could be on the move in the off-season. What remains for sure - Young, Huerter, JJ, OO (good value contract and tradable). Also IMHO - Wright is resigned for about $7 million starting to back up Trae. If you can send out all of those players, its very possible to bring back 2 high priced players to pair with Young on a better fit and a solid role guy to fill in at PF until JJ is ready to take over full time. If it was my offseason, I could/would ship out all/part of the above for Gobert or Ayton (as available and tradeable), Portis ($10-12 million ish at most) and 1 star level player/scorer at the 2/3 who can create for themselves. I start Gobert, Portis, Huerter, Star-2, Young. You have a ton of money to play with this offseason if you can sell on your moveable core. I expect big changes this offseason to get bigger, meaner around Trae.
  17. There is no "quick" in his first step. He pulls up immediately after step 1. Its pretty obvious his body isn't doing what he'd like it to do.
  18. @JayBirdHawk, @NBASupes I believe the below answers the question. I understood the question but wanted to make sure 1) There was no gotcha moment in my answer for people to come back later and say "but what about leap year during a full moon" and 2) I wanted to find a clear moment similar to what you're asking. Those usually happen pre moratorium for cap reasons (as Supes is saying) and for players other teams really want who the current team doesn't want going into the next season. In that scenario, the Hawks would be in rebuild, recap mode and the other team is looking for a player to build around (like what the Lakers are getting ready to do). From: https://cbabreakdown.com/trades TIMING AND PROCEDURES Teams can make trades between the start of the regular season up to the NBA’s trade deadline — 3pm (eastern) on the seventeenth Thursday of the season. (The trade deadline for the 2018-19 season was February 7, 2019.) For teams that do not make the playoffs, they can start making trades again on the day after their last regular season game. Playoff teams can start making trades once they’re eliminated from the playoffs. However, no trades can take place during the moratorium period. To finalize a trade, teams have to participate in a trade call with the league where they confirm the trade’s details. Teams must disclose all relevant information they have about a player during this call. (And this is why the New York Knicks disclosed the sexual assault allegations surrounding Kristaps Porzingis to the Dallas Mavericks during their trade call; if they had not disclosed this information, the league could have rescinded the trade, fined the Knicks up to $1 million, taken away future draft picks, or a combination of these punishments.) (Note, the league’s By-Laws prevent a team from trading or selling its first round draft picks if the result of that trade leaves the team without a first round pick in any two consecutive future drafts.)
  19. I waited to collect my thoughts before posting. Still not sure I'm going to say what I mean. There are a few things obvious to me as this series seems to be winding down. Trae is hurt and isn't saying anything. I expect news to come out post series. Bogi is hurt and may be damaged goods. He caught 2 flatfooted rebounds last night. No attempt to jump. Very late reaction. He wasn't going to move unless the ball came to him. We may have missed our window to trade Bogi. Collins lacks the dog in him. There's a want it, elevate your game, go get it quality and I just haven't seen it. He's starting to get old enough we can't say, lets wait, he's young. In the Trae/Luka draft, we had the opportunity to trade the Dallas asset (Cam) + a future pick and a player to move up for Jaren Jackson. I haven't mentioned it before but that was part of the buried draft night chatter. There wasn't a consensus at the time of what to give up and would he develop. He sure would look good at the 4 on this team right now. I'll wait until we're officially eliminated to finish this thought, say what I want in the off season, but the number one thing I want is heart and health for this team. When your star is hobbled but fighting through, someone has to step up their game. Someone has to want it, show the dog. That isn't here right now.
  20. Read the replies to the tweet. Multiple reference the Atl v Mia series.
