Johnson and one other person in the car suffered serious injuries, according to Fulton police Maj. M.J. Wenda Phifer. The incident happened at Kimberly and Fairburn roads, near Cascade Road, in southwest Fulton. It's not yet known what exactly led to the accident, however Maj. Phifer said three people were in the car which burst into flames at the time of the wreck. The 6-foot-9-inch, 201-lb. forward has played in 158 games during his two seasons with the Hawks. He attended the University of Cincinnati, where he played on the Bearcats basketball team before entering the NBA. Fulton County Police Maj. Wenda Phifter said Johnson and one other person in the car sustained injuries in the accident. It happened around 5:30 a.m. Phifer said three people were in the car which burst into flames at the time of the wreck. Johnson, 22, was a first round pick of the Hawks in 2000, the sixth choice overall even though he played just one year of college basketball at Cincinnati. He played little his rookie year, but began to get more playing time later in his second pro season. A 6-9 small forward, he started 46 games last year and averaged 8.4 points a game. Johnson, 22, and two other men were in Johnson's Mercedes just before 5 a.m. when the car crossed the center line and hit the tree. It was not known who was driving and no other cars were involved in the crash, police said. Johnson was taken to a hospital with head trauma, and his condition was not immediately known. One man had internal injuries and the other only minor injuries, Fulton County police Maj. Wenda Phifer said. Hawks officials could not be immediately reached for comment. Johnson, a first-round draft pick in 2000 after only one year at Cincinnati, averaged 8.4 points in 72 games last season -- his second with the Hawks.
