TheNorthCydeRises
I think we scored 6 points within 10 seconds after Jersey made a shot. We definitely ran more, and took more quick shots, after misses. Of course Chill would be all for running all the time. He's maybe our mot limited offensive player in the halfcourt offense. Maybe the solution is to have a group that does nothing but run for a period of time. Have JJ be out of the game, since he's hobbled, and just try to run with our bench [ Law, Lue ( since Wody isn't going to stop playing him ), Chill ], with Marvin and Smoove or Horford on the floor with them. It always starts with rebounding and defense though. Do those 2 things, and we can get out and not have to force the run.

We might not need him for 40+ minutes a night. If that group was successful running in stretches, we may be able to get away with JJ playing 32 - 37 minutes a night. If Woody could give JJ rest from the 3 minutes left to go mark in the 1st and 3rd qtrs . . . to the 8 minutes left to go mark in the 2nd and 4th qtrs, that would be huge. That would give JJ at least 6 - 7 minutes of rest in the middle of each half. He'll try to do that now, when we're winning. When we're in a real tight game or when we're losing, JJ better expect to play 40+ minutes, with possibly playing the entire 2nd half.

We definitely ran more, and took more quick shots, after misses. That 6 points can be the difference between winning and losing a game for a team that struggles in the halfcourt like the Hawks. One thing that doesn't show up in the box score is the fact that the Hawks have more time on the shot clock when they push the ball up the floor. if the opponents know that the Hawks will run even after makes then they will be less likely to crash the offensive glass. A really key issue is that it keeps the Hawks in an aggressive mindset. Too many times they have tightened up late in games. Staying in attack mode makes that less likely. We're basically playing the type of ball that limits our strenghts - athleticism, young legs, points in the paint...

DrReality
It for sure fits Chill's game becasue he can score without using that ugly jump shot. Rebounding and defense lead to running, but it is true the other way around. Itchanges the tempo of the game and leads to rebounds and defense. Right now the Hawks are ranked 9th in defensive efficiency and 20th in offensive efficiency so clearly their defense is ahead of their offense. It will be tough for them to significantly improve their defense this season since they are inexperienced and undersized. Sometimes they will inevitably get confused on rotations. The only big adjustments they can make to improve defensively this season (without a trade) are keeping Lue and Zaza on the bench and boxing out more. Offensively there is a much clearer path to improvement.
JackB1
Why did it take almost half the season for the Hawks to realize they are MUCH more effective when they run and push the tempo? Doesn't it make you crazy when you hear stuff like this? Let's hope that the message sticks this time. And Woodson.....PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE reward Acie with more minutes tonite!!! He seems like he is on his way and we don't need to see more of "The Closer". Acie and AJ can push the ball, while Lue just dribbles away the shot clock. MORE ACIE!!!!! A halfcourt squad: AJ, JJ, MW, Horf, and Zaza (or Lo or Shelden). A Hybrid squad: JC, JJ, MW, JS, Horf. With these squads of course, you will have need for subs... Like Zaza/Shelden for Horf at Center. JC for MW. Lue for JJ. And that's it...
thesheedera
AJ can run too. You probably want to limit the amount of time he's on the floor at a fast tempo, but he's very capable of running the break and forcing the issue, without making mistakes. Premium Member Diesel Posted February 4, 2008 Premium Member Report Share Posted February 4, 2008 Well, I didn't mean to imply that the halfcourt team is a walk it up team. Just that they don't run it up on every possession. I think that when you build big leads, you need a team that can bring the ball up the floor and efficiently run a play that will either lead to points or to a player going to the line. I also think that we have to find a low post scorer for that bunch.

Traceman
I think it is obvious to everyone (even Woody) that we are at our best when we run. I think the difference for Woody is that he is FAR more comfortable with us running off turnovers and rebounds than he is off made baskets. That said, maybe there is a lineup of guys that we can put on the floor who runs off EVERYTHING, including made baskets, to force out tempo on other teams. Trial and error might determine what the best lineup for that is but I like the one you proposed of Acie, Chillz, Marv, Smoove and Big Al. Late in the game, when the ability to execute in the halfcourt becomes crucial, go back to the starting lineup of AJ, JJ, Marv, Smoove and Big Al.
