The silver lining in getting a new GM....

Okay, I am a BK guy, so I am not happy he left, but I know others disagree. Not the point...A NEW GM IS LIKELY TO WANT TO GET A NEW COACH

Whoever the new GM is (unless it is someone from inside the org), is undoubtedly going to want to get a new coach. I mean, even if the ASG gives Woody a new contract (and I can't see it being for anything more than like 2 years, maybe 3, if they even extend him), after half a season, our new GM is going to want to fire Woody. Undoubtedly, after watching Woody bumble through "leading" our team, he will want to see a change. Even someone like Billy King, who I do not want to be our GM no matter what, would want to get rid of Woody, I feel fairly certain. So, hopefully we get a new coach out of all this drama....

Now, if we promote a new GM from within after the ASG has extended Woody, we are in trouble.

You do realize that when a coach is fired, he gets paid the remainder of his contract, right? I'm guessing that a new GM comes in here knowing that the owners will determine when and if Woody gets fired and at best, he will be able to hire the new coach once the owners make the decision on Woody. But don't expect the new GM to come in and have the power to fire Woody next season with the owners stuck with the expense of his recently signed contract.

Billy Knight wanted to fire Woody. Of course any new decent GM would want to fire him and likely would not allow the ASG to resign him in the first place.

From the quotes we are seeing from Gearon, it may be that GM candidates are being told that they need to be ready to work with Woodson.

This was the last year of Woody's contract.

I think anakin is assuming Gearon is not throwing us a deke in the media and is planning on resigning Woodson to at least a one year deal. I would not be suprised to see a 2 year deal or at least a club option for a 2nd year.

If Woodson is given a new contract there is no way in the world it will be a one year deal or a 2 year deal where the second year is a club option, IMO. That would undermine his future in Atlanta from day 1 of the new contract. He will be brought back with a multi-year deal - probably some type of 3 year contract.

If that is the case be prepared to see the Hawks hire a very underwhelming GM candidate, since a GM candidate with a decent resume wouldn't agree to those terms.

The fact that it looks like ownership is going to re-up Woody means that the best case scenerio for GM is a guy like King. King has experience. Knows how to build teams. Knows how to spot talent. Has mistakes to learn from. And most importantly with our situation is that he's already good with Wood and his staff.

The worse case scenerio for us is to bring in a GM that will limit Wood's power in coaching (i get the feeling that this is what happened with BK this third year.

Still the thing I hate is that Wood makes too many mistakes as a coach.

We really need an Offensive coordinator.

Alvin Gentry, Terry Porter or some other offensive specialist.

The Hawks need a good head coach. Woody is not that guy. Why handcuff a new GM with the old GM's mistake?

Getting a new head coach right now would be a mistake.

There isn't any great guy out there as of now, and it would be a move just for the sake of making a move.

Right now we should have continuity.

Give this team another year to build off what they did this season. If they don't then go find a new guy

But don't do anything while we're been improving every year and have finally started to get re-united with the post-season again
