Boomer
I know he doesn't have any coaching experience, but he couldn't be much worse than Woody. I imagine he'd get respect from the players. He seems to know what he's talking about when he's calling games with Rathbun.
Swatguy
I wonder if Smitty would make a good coach? I don't see it. His personality is very "laid back". I can see him as GM with his personality and basketball Intelligence. But not coach.

pimp
Question is . . . what would Smitty do differently than Woody? Smitty would do alot of things differnt than Woody. If you listen to Steve Smith , he always says ... ( I dont know why the Hawks aren't doing "BLANK") I don't know why the Hawks are not running any more.... I don't know why we're not pressuring the inbounder in crunch time I don't know we're not taking advantage of a certain mitch matches. I don't know why we're not giving the ball to Horford more. I don't know " " " "

Moderators macdaddy Posted August 22, 2008 Moderators Report Share Posted August 22, 2008 I wonder if Smitty would make a good coach? There's no way to know really. He could be horrible. But he's been in the league a lot more recently than Woody and he's played for some great coaches. When he came to the hawks he went from a guy with potential to the goto guy on 50 win teams. He did it because he's smart, hard working, and tenacious. I would think he could bring that to coaching. I know he wouldn't let our guys get punked without some retaliation and he wouldn't put up with lack of effort on either end. Of course, remember when Magic was a coach. You can't just say 'here's how we did it back in the day'

Boomer
Can anyone think of an example of a player that came back to coach his old team without prior coaching experience and was succesful? I guess Bill Russell did it as a player/coach so we won't count that.

Avery Johnson went to the finals with the Mavs with no coaching experience, after playing for them the year before..........i think. Maybe Nate McMillan with the Sonics???
