exodus
“That man has made too many game winners for us to say anything about that free throw,” Hawks forward Marvin Williams said of Johnson’s late-game miss. “I missed three myself. It’s just one of those nights where you play great defense and do all the things you can, but the game gets away from you.” he is right about JJ and the defense, but he is wrong about doing all the things they can. Some here were complaining when it was pointed out (after wins against bad teams) how many dumb mistakes the Hawks were making on offense and how poor the offensive sets were. After all, we won so why complain? The games in the Texas Triangle and last nights game were all games the Hawks could have won if they actually played smart. They make way too many dumb mistakes (Horford's traveling, Smith's 3s and pg forays, turnovers due to a stagnant offense and too much dribbling) that are going to cost them a lot of close games. Obviously you aren't going to win all close games but the Hawks will lose a lot of them that they should win until they wise up.

Agreed Ex...and I'd like to point out another thing. Many of the things we rightfully complain about are the result of our weak offensive system (like JS shooting to much from the perimeter, Zaza bulldozing into a charge, etc.). Many times the ISO-JJ offense and the double-JJ defense results in so much standing around that when JJ finally is forced to pass the ball with <8 seconds on the shot clock, the recipient of the pass doesn't have much choice but to try something on his own. Usually nobody is cutting to the hoop or anything because they expected to just watch JJ shoot anyway.
Dsinner
Joe didn't loose that game for us... The reason we lost was because we missed our first 11 shots... If you truly believe that, you don't understand the "flow" of a basketball game. That first quarter ended up being close, as did the first half. Basketball isn't simple math were you can say if we had hit 2 of those first 11 that would have been 4 more points and we would have won. It just doesn't work like that. Gray Mule
Nope. Missing those first eleven shots had nothing to do with the loss. Missing seven free throws had nothing to do with the loss. It just doesn't add up that way. If not scoring points has nothing to do with whether you win or lose a game, why keep score? Making shots = adding to the score, or so we've been told. Scoring more points IS the object of the game, I believe. If it doesn't work that way, please enlighten us poor souls who are apparently in the dark on this matter.

JJ choked but Hawks as a team didnt make their FTs and JJ missed a big one..its that simple

That one stuck out to me. The Hawks were building a lead and ZaZa got it in his mind to try and take the defender and ended up with a turnovers. It's like: Don't even freakin think about it! Yet, he thought about it and tried it and turned the ball over.

Those dumb turnovers that many of us were complaining about when we beat bad teams are the same ones costing us games against good teams.

Sorry, this is NOT a good 3pt shooting team. Even JJ has been mediocre shooting the 3 this season. 1-7 AGAIN last night. 0-5 against Cleveland and 2-6 against Charlotte. He needs to stop shooting 3's. He is only shooting 36% in three's this year. The rest of the team needs to stay away. Guys like Smoove and Flip should be benched when they take 3's. They played a large part in the bad 3 point shooting of the team this month. 7-24 last night. Only 29% in three's.

The Hawks are 3rd in the NBA in 3 pointers made per game and 8th in the league in 3 pt percentage. Saying that they aren't a good 3 pt shooting team is like saying they don't play their home games in Atlanta. Shooting comes and goes even for the best shooters. But effort and smart play should be constants and they definitely aren't for the Hawks.

You don't just all of a sudden become a good 3pt shooting team. Marvin has made 26% of three's this month. Which is far more reasonable than the 47% he shot in November. He wasn't a 3pt threat before. It's very possible that he just fell back down to earth.

He doesn't want to bog down the team with systematic offense. When players have to improvise, the probability of accidents increase slightly. That's just the price you pay for freedom. Obviously Marvin wasn't going to stay as hot as he was. But Bibby, JJ and Mo are proven 3 pt shooters. Bibby is a career 37% shooter, JJ is a career 37.6% shooter and Mo shot 40% from 3 last season. If they just shoot the way they have shot in past years that makes the Hawks a good 3 pt shooting team.

Well, Bibby and JJ are exceptions. But JJ should consider cut back abit due to him not shooting them all that great this year. Mo was hot early on, but he's a journeyman for a reason. He isn't all that dependable. Edited December 18, 2008 by Hotlanta1981
