Is there a way to get some sort of email notification when I get a new private message? And is there a way where the PMs can be directed to my GMail or even Hawksquawk email account?

Under "Email Settings" in your control panel there are settings for things like that. If you choose to get notifications then they will go to whatever email address you registered with.
