Moderators AHF Posted July 1, 2010 Moderators Report Share Posted July 1, 2010 (edited) I bet over half the list signs for $3 mill or less. I'll try to track the ones I said wouldn't and see. I bet that group falls into one of two categories: (a) they sign with a a specific team over a specific contract and usually a premium contender and were therefore never available to the Hawks to sign or (b) they sign for more than $3M If even 30% of the players I flagged don't fall into those categories, I will be surprised. More to the point, we'll see which of them the Hawks actually sign. Edited July 1, 2010 by AHF

spotatl
Considering how many posts have been wasted talking about Garret Siler I'd definitely say that a hawks draftpick deserves a 4 page thread.

Moderators AHF Posted July 2, 2010 Moderators Report Share Posted July 2, 2010 ZaZa's 1st deal was $4 mill per year for 4 years right ? That is pretty darn close. Here is a list a FA that will be probably be $3 mill or cheaper per year. Many of these guys will be LLE players. I am bolding the players who will likely get more then the LLE in my mind but not over $3 mill. Tony Allen Marquis Daniels Larry Hughes Will not play for the Hawks for $3M/year Theo Ratliff Brad Miller - could play for the LLE on a contender. Good fit off the bench for teams running a triangle offense. -- Will not play for the Hawks for $3M/year Flip Murray Big Z -- Will not play for the Hawks for $3M/year Johan Petro Tim Thomas Ben Wallace Will not play for the Hawks for $3M/year CJ Watson Will not play for the Hawks for $3M/year Kyle Lowry Earl Watson Steve Blake Brian Skinner Drew Gooden - $3 mill is possible and would be a steal Will not play for the Hawks for $3M/year Craig Smith Shannon Brown Joel Anthony Rafer Aslton Luke Ridnour Kurt Thomas Will not play for the Hawks for $3M/year Darko Milic Will not play for the Hawks for $3M/year Damien Wilkens Matt Barnes Will not play for the Hawks for $3M/year Chris Duhon Eddie House Matt Barnes Will not play for the Hawks for $3M/year Adone Foyle Channy Frye Will not play for the Hawks for $3M/year Louise Amundson Randy Foye Will not play for the Hawks for $3M/year Matt Bonner Kyle Korver Will not play for the Hawks for $3M/year Roger Mason Amir Johnson Will not play for the Hawks for $3M/year Rasho Nesterovic Gooden down for $6M/year Darko down for $5M/year Amir Johnson down for $7M/year

Moderators AHF Posted July 8, 2010 Moderators Report Share Posted July 8, 2010 Right in the ball park for a PG upgrade. Yep. Both over $3M but within reason for the Hawks. The tougher part may be the fact that these guys got 4 years. I don't think we wanted to commit to mediocre players like these for the next 4 years. spotatl
Right- the conversation was about how mcuh good it woudl do to save 3 million dollars. Duhon got 15 million dollars. Blake got 20 million dollars. Thats why its ridiculous to try and save money by selling picks like the Hawks did as 3 million just doesn't go very far in free agency. With the first pick in the second round you are paying the guy the minimum and don't even have to guarantee the contract if you dont' want to. Then the player will almost certainly give you a team option if you guarantee a little more money. And even if you allow the player to become a free agent they are a restricted free agent. TheNorthCydeRises
The sold pick at #31 gives ownership an extra 3 million to financially do whatever they want to with it Or to put it another way. If the Hawks had a payroll maximum budget of 70 million . . . and they ended up spending 1.5 million over the luxury tax . . . the league would come in and make them pay an additional 1.5 million ( the luxury tax $1 for $1 penalty ) . . . totaling 3 million the Hawks would have to pay over their set payroll budget. But now, because of the sold 2nd round pick, all they would have to do is write the league a 1.5 million check, and credit the other 1.5 million to themselves, thus, keeping them within budget. While all of us would've loved for them to use that #31 on an actual player, we do have to remember that this IS a business. And because we're a low revenue generating franchise, combined with a ownership group who may not have as deep of pockets as some of the other owners, moves like selling a pick for money may be necessary from time to time. If the extra 3 million they made by selling the pick, gives them a little more incentive to get one or two decent players that puts them over the tax, then I'm not upset with them selling the pick.
