Popular Post DJlaysitup
I'm sick and dang tired of the anti-Smoove threads/comments. "What's wrong with Josh".. "Smoove is dumbest player"..."Smoove must be traded"..."Smoove eats kittens for breakfast" B and S. - Let's look at the Stats for all of our "Bigs" against the 76ers: Smoove went: 6-14 shooting, 4-5 free throws, 5 rebounds, 7 assists (16-5-7) not great on the shooting precentage - but not hideous....he also played the most minutes of any player on our team. Marvin went 5-10 shooting, 0-0 on free throws, 10 rebounds, 0 assists (10-10-0) good shooting and good rebounding. Zaza played a little over 11 minutes...0-2...2-2...2 rebs...0 assists (2-2-0) JP played 13 and a half minutes...0-3...0-0...0 rebounds...0 assists (0-0-0) Collins - DNP/CD...Al Horford - inactive/injury....E. Thomas - inactive. Obviously the only two "Bigs" who were even in the game (so to speak) were Marvin and Smoove. No other bigs contributed at all. and of the two "Bigs" who did contribute - one is 6-8 and the other is 6-9.... tremor
I'm with you, DJ. When JJ has bad shooting night he "at least does other thing well, makes his teammates better etc", when Smoove doesn't shoot well, he's eaten alive. BTW, how the heck he managed to get 7 assists in that game?
Premium Member NineOhTheRino Posted February 10, 2011 Premium Member Report Share Posted February 10, 2011 (edited) I love when Smoove hits a jumper and Nique praises him only to have Smoove come down 5 secs later and air-balls the same jumper and Niques says: "That's not the shot you want." WTH Nique! How do you kill him and praise him for the same action? Can we please have some consistency with Josh Smith? Either you love or hate him. Pick one! High5
The issue with Josh is that more than any other player his problems are largely self-inflicted. He should never have a bad shooting night from the outside because he's not a shooter. He can take the occasional wide open 3 in the flow of the offense, but he should never stand idly around the 3pt line for several seconds waiting for the pass. At least not without the intention of driving the basketball. He sure as hell should never take that stupid fade-away around the FT line that he shoots at about a 5% clip. Plus all of the general mistakes he makes when trying to do too much. All of our guys have their problems, but I can't think of anyone who could as easily solve many of them just by changing their mindset. A mindset change won't make Bibby a good defender or make Marvin a coordinated human being. And you have to see the problem with needing to compare Josh's game with Zaza, Collins, Powell, and Thomas.

This is where I come in. Josh is not the worst player on our team in virtually any game this year. He is the player with the most obvious and easily fixable flaws in his game.

DJlaysitup
And has shown for years now he has no intentions on fixing the flaws in his game which makes him expendable to upgrade at PG or C. C'mon Soth...you know better than that  . Smoove is a player who actually tries hard to add a piece to his game every year. This is well documented.

Smoove is a player who actually tries hard to add a piece to his game every year. This is well documented. He's had one year where he seemed to try and score in the post or the paint and not take ill advised jump shots. Every other year he's tried to be a jump shooter when he's not. He has the same lack of maturity and bball IQ right now that he has had since he was a rookie. He is by far the most expendable part of our core. Premium Member NineOhTheRino Posted February 10, 2011 Premium Member Report Share Posted February 10, 2011 (edited) Josh Smith is and will always be a lightning rod for criticism. Horford on the other is the Teflon Don. Imagine the firestorm if Josh's father made the statements that Al's father made. Somehow I don't think fans and media would be so nonchalant. Smoove is a player who actually tries hard to add a piece to his game every year. This is well documented. No one gives him enough credit for dramatically improving his game. And saying that Smoove has the 'most fixable' flaws in his game is a joke. Marvin just needs to decide to do something. The dude catches the ball and immediately looks for someone to pass to. How hard is it to be more assertive? Joe settles for more long jumpers than Smoove and is shooting 3s 5 percentage points below Josh. Jamal makes almost no effort on defense. I guess its just too difficult for him to try harder?
Premium Member NineOhTheRino Posted February 10, 2011 Premium Member Report Share Posted February 10, 2011 (edited) Why are the Hawks guards seldom criticized for passing to Josh on the perimeter and for not creating more opportunities for him down low? Seems like there's enough blame to go around but amazingly the bulk seems to settle on Josh. Good lord if it wasn't for the long jumper he'd never get a chance to score. JackB1
You are missing the point (much like Smoove does). You can't compare Smoove's stats to Marvin, Zaza or Collins. You have to compare Smoove to Smoove. The problem always have been with HOW he plays and how he SHOULD play. With Smith's ability, he should be getting near 20 points a night and at least 10 rebounds a night. He doesn't realize his own abilities and know how to maximize his strengths. Zaza does. How often do you see Zaza trying to dribble the ball up the court or shooting from 30 feet out? How about never.

If they didn't pass it to him on the perimeter then he'd never touch the ball in the half court. But of course there is plenty of blame to go around. He's just the most frustrating to me for the reasons mentioned.

Blame coaching! LD has to understand that he's setting Josh up for failure. Woody damn near lost his Job fixing Josh. LD undid years of hard work in one summer. The real issue will come in the playoffs. Josh will go into the playoffs thinking he can make long jumpers but will get a rude awakening fast. He may hit that when he's wide open but what happens when teams start to guard him. No way in hell he hits that shot if guarded giving his slow as molasses shooting motion. (TY BK) the fact that you are trying to use ZAZA or POWELL or COLLINS is exactly why Josh catches so much flack and deserves it . He had the most potential of anyone on the squad and people are realizing that the odds of him reaching that potential has dropped to maybe 5% . Nevermind the fact that he still is playing the game like some guy fresh out of high school not some well paid veteran ready to lead the team out of the first rd . So while of course Josh put up better numbers than the scrubs you listed HES SUPPOSED TO and while he is still a very good player he is falling way short of the player everyone thought he would become and doesn't seem interested in becoming much else . He should be pressed and pushed hard as possible as hes the key to this team either stalling out and free falling or making it out of the 2nd rd .
