Buried within an entertaining read regarding some problems/solutions for the NBA's haves and have mores comes this Hawks-centric tidbit from Simmons regarding the highest payed players in the league and those who should and shouldn't have the sized contract. And Joe Johnson, who has been married to the fact that he signed the biggest contract of last season, for better or worse, comes out on the "belongs on the list" from Simmons. Really, it's true:
Moderators AHF Posted July 12, 2011 Moderators Report Share Posted July 12, 2011 Shaq, Allen Iverson, Yao Ming, and others would approve of Simmons' criteria.
coachx
I expect a bounce back year for JJ with a healthy shooting elbow. Hopefully his 3pt shooting comes back to 36% or better.
HawkItus
Shaq, Allen Iverson, Yao Ming, and others would approve of Simmons' criteria. Actually Simmons criteria works perfectly for the situations. Shaq missed out on the All-star and service his last few years. Yao if he could play still would get that big of a contract. Allen Iverson today would not qualify and would not get the big contract.

There is no way they would say a guy who has made an All-Star team 4 out of the last 5 seasons wouldn't quality as an "All-Star" but someone who was an All-Star 2 of the last 4 years and played all 4 years with the same team was an "All-Star." Iverson was selected for the All-Star game in 11 of the last 12 years. If you look at an arbitrary rule like "selected for the All-Star team in 2 of the last 4 years" then he would easily qualify even though he can't even get a minimum salary offer anymore. Coming into last season, Shaq would qualify as an All-Star (2 of the last 4, 3 of the last 5) even though he was getting minimum salary offers. Yao would qualify even as well even though his health is so compromised that he has so little value that he is willing to retire. The guys whose reputation outstrips their play would like that system.
