Admin
I wanted to take a look at the stats of Josh Smith and see how he compared with the forwards who are playing in the All-Star game this year and this is how it looks. I've also attached the zip file that contains the Excel spreadsheet used to create these charts for those that are interested. Updated the charts to maintain the same order and make Josh's stats easier to see, plus included an overall rankings chart to see where he fits in each category, out of 12 possible. All Rankings (lower number is better here): <img src="http://www.hawksquawk.net/dolfan23/charts/Ranks.png" /> Per Game: <img src="http://www.hawksquawk.net/dolfan23/charts/PPG.png" /><br /> <img src="http://www.hawksquawk.net/dolfan23/charts/APG.png" /><br /> <img src="http://www.hawksquawk.net/dolfan23/charts/BPG.png" /><br /> <img src="http://www.hawksquawk.net/dolfan23/charts/RPG.png" /><br /> <img src="http://www.hawksquawk.net/dolfan23/charts/SPG.png" /><br /> <img src="http://www.hawksquawk.net/dolfan23/charts/TOPG.png" /><br /> Percentages: <img src="http://www.hawksquawk.net/dolfan23/charts/FG.png" /><br /> <img src="http://www.hawksquawk.net/dolfan23/charts/FT.png" /><br /> <img src="http://www.hawksquawk.net/dolfan23/charts/3PT.png" /><br /> Advanced Stats: <img src="http://www.hawksquawk.net/dolfan23/charts/EFG.png" /><br /> <img src="http://www.hawksquawk.net/dolfan23/charts/TS.png" /><br /> <img src="http://www.hawksquawk.net/dolfan23/charts/EFF.png" /><br /> <img src="http://www.hawksquawk.net/dolfan23/charts/PER.png" /><br /> <img src="http://www.hawksquawk.net/dolfan23/charts/USG.png" /><br />All-Star F Stats.zip

Guest
Good break down but it is too hard to read , you should have kept the same color for each player and kept the names in the same order.

Admin
Good break down but it is too hard to read , you should have kept the same color for each player and kept the names in the same order. I didn't really have time to do that so I stuck with the default Excel color palette but the players are listed in order on the right for what they are going L-R on each graph so it should be easy to see where each player fits in. I didn't want to have the names listed in the same order as I wanted to sort each graph from best to worst. I probably should have mentioned that earlier but I was late for happy hour LOL. Admin
Perhaps someone who is better at Excel and has a bit of time can go in and color coordinate the players? I don't work with Excel much so I'm just about at my limits of what I can do with it.

Alright is that easier to read now? I've put them all in alphabetical order and made Josh's graph stand out a bit more, plus added an overall chart at the top for him. *If they look the same you might need to clear your cache.

Admin
Me likey... Nice work on this. Deng and Iggy... Thank you ... glad y'all like. It does seem kind of messed up that Deng and Iggy are in over Josh after going through all of these nimbers ... so it's clearly a personal thing as to why he didn't get in. The blocks chart is kinda funny looking and seems like a statement from Josh to the NBA
benhillboy
Being last in true shooting may be the deathnail, but you can't deny the man being way ahead of the pack in blocks and being third in rebounding to Love (historic rebounder) and Griffin is quite impressive. That LeBron James might be okay some day if he improves his rebounding and free throw shooting, as if he doesn't outclass everybody at his position by a wide margin already. Moderators AHF Posted February 24, 2012 Moderators Report Share Posted February 24, 2012 Being last in true shooting may be the deathnail I think you are right. It is a combination of poor efficiency scoring the ball and opponents knowing Josh gives them the exact look they most want - him shooting from the perimeter - way, way too often. When an opponent does exactly what you want them to, you lose respect for them. That is a perception that amounts to headwind for Josh trying to get an All-Star invite along with the carping at the refs, running the break, etc. that opponents just have to love to see. I suspect there is a whole sheet of things that guys try to get Josh to do in games while for most players of his caliber it is about stopping them from doing the right things (ala "back off and hope he makes a few jumpers at the beginning of the game," "hit him a few times to try to get him distracted barking at the refs," "if he rebounds the ball try to let him be the person advancing the ball and don't pick him up until he is past half court", etc.). Yep........that also equates to a low basketball IQ as well....even though that is not a stat. I'm a Hawks fan and a Josh Smith fan but I'm also honest. His inability to correct the primary weakness to his game is what keeps him from getting the needed respect from coaches required to make an allstar team. I think you are right. Well said, AHF. and that is why he has little trade value.........most coaches do not want to deal with guys like that. Premium Member Diesel Posted February 24, 2012 Premium Member Report Share Posted February 24, 2012 I tend to think that it's as simple as coaches choice. Coaches know that the gameplan against Smoove is easy. Back up and give him the shot. Smoove has a lot of effort stats but no intelligence stats working for him.
