I don't blame Joe, Al, Josh and Marvin. I blame ASG and Sund

It's their fault. They never decided to go by personnel groupings. They made Joe a #1 option when it was clear in his 1st year he wasn't a number #1 option. They decided it Smith and Horford are a great tandem when it is clear that both players play better without the other and both are PF's who are redundant since both are more so finesse players. They value their talent too much when they don't fix. They are like the Miami Heat in terms of redundancy but are like OKC in terms having a stagnant offense but OKC has Harden, Westbrook and Durant who are all potential #1 options on any NBA team and Atlanta only has one and he can't even create his own shot.Atlanta is built around guys who are better without the ball than with the ball. Joe Johnson is a spot up shooter who can create his own shot and is a playmaker a little bit. Marvin is a spot up shooter who can move off the ball really well. Horford is an elite PnR PF who plays center with a combo guard who has no PG skills but is talented but no where near the talented needed to overcome the fact that he can't run an offense. Smoove is seriously a crab-shoot player. He is like Rajon Rondo, extremely talented but heavily flawed but unlike Rondo who is in the perfect situation, Smoove is in an awful situation. He has no one to create some of his offense, he has to play next to either a below average offensive center in Zaza who's undersized or an PnR PF in Horford and his offense sets are stagnant most of the time. For Smith to even be what he is in team is amazing to me. My hat goes off to Josh Smith.Defensively, this team is just fine. Teague is a good man defender but his PnR defense is awful. His team defense is good and causes trouble in terms of help side defense. Joe is a very good defender, he does struggle with man at times but generally his team defense, and PnR defense is pretty good. Marvin is a very good overall defender. He can struggle with SF's who have a great first step but generally he can defend SF's better than most SF's in the NBA. Smith is a jack of all trades defender. He is a solid man defender, not too versatile and he struggles in terms of low post defense at times especially when he has mental lapse. He struggles v. quick forwards and can be at risk in terms of perimeter defense depending on the match-up. But his defensive BBIQ and his ability to anchor a defense is elite. He also is an elite help side defender who is a head hunter for blocks and steals. He makes the defense a lot better. Horford is the most versatile defender. He can play post defense, man defense, team defense and can guard any position in spurts, and he has elite overall BBIQ. Horford issue is he struggles v. bigs with more size plus skill and he struggles v. extremely quick bigs. He doesn't really protect the rim nor is he much help on help side defense. Zaza is a solid defender. Decent in terms of low post defense and man defense. Struggles v. the PnR and doesn't protect the rim nor is a threat in help side defense.Overall, the defense is top notch but the lack of size and offensive inefficiency kills the Hawks more times than not. This team needs a playmaking PG more than any NBA team in the history of the NBA. It's clear when you look at the strengths and weaknesses of the players.ASG/Sund and the management team has done a horrible job in terms of personnel groupings. Talent wise, we are one of the most talented NBA teams in the league. But fix wise, this is the worse NBA team in the league. Even teams with little talent like Charlotte can put a team together that at least somewhat fix even when they can't possibly put players in the perfect place for them because they lack the talent overall. ASG/Sund and the management team needs to figure out how to get all the pieces to work or expect the same thing again and again.

You are correct. But I think the main issue has been coaching.

A coach can't make bad pieces fit. His best bet is to bench Smoove for Zaza and have Smoove as a 6th man but at the end of the day, we don't have enough talent in the starting lineup and we are no different anyway. Management needs to do their job and get a playmaking PG and a center with size.

Tattoo this to Gearon's forehead. It's been amusing the last few years how the team tries to promote Joe as some kind of star. Being an All Star don't mean squat if you vanish in the playoffs. Wake me when this nightmare is over and someone that gives a damn owns this team.
