Lost in an long running trade deadline e-mail diary between Bill Simmons and Zach Lowe of Grantland was a comment regarding the state of the mega-deal in the NBA.

You know, the big player for big player, high salary for another high salary or multiple salaries deals? With first round picks and swapalicious sweetners attached? It's the best, right?

When Danny Ferry took over as GM of the Hawks he came in, ate a turkey sandwich, and then unloaded from the team what was thought to be unloadable, the Joe Johnsoncontract.

He traded Joe and his massive contract to Brooklyn for Jordan Farmar, Anthony Morrow, Johan Petro, DeShawn Stevenson, Jordan Williams, a 2013 1st round draft pick (Shane Larkin was later selected) and a 2017 2nd round draft pick.

Also, Ferry gained the ability to swap picks with Brooklyn for both the 2014 and 2015 drafts.

It was fantastic that Ferry unloaded Joe and the huge back end of his six year, 123 million dollar deal. To get all expiring contracts back was a bonus. To get picks was incredible. To get the swap pick sweetener for multiple years was very surprising.

So Hawks fans were thrilled, but what was the impact of the deal across the league? Did it impact this season's deadline deals at all?

Says Lowe:

Wait, what? Atlanta got the best of someone in a deal? Not just that, but it's the recent gold standards of lopsided deals by which all other teams wish they had?

Danny Ferry came off the street, suited up and scored 100 on his first test, and it set the foundation for every sweet thing that has followed.

It hasn't netted a top-flight free agent, yet, but it has set the Hawks free from the certain salary cap quagmire that was going to follow. Toss in the Marvin Williams deal that occurred after Danny finished the Johnson deal, had a cream soda and then scalded Utah and it may go down as an all-time franchise moment.

It was good at the time, so so very good, but to see it now is to see it in even greater perspective, and the vision is oh so sweet.

Uh...not sure why I was, well, whatever you call it when you @name people? I always was a fan of trading Joe to get out of his contract. Loved the player, hated the contract. Go back and look when we traded him and every time its been brought up since. Always liked that deal.

I know we've been around this topic many, many times...but it still surprises me to no end how we cleared 150 million in cap space from Joe and Marvin. I don't know how he convinced the brass in Brooklyn and Utah to pull the trigger.... great moves. As time goes forward, we'll keep realizing the impact those trades made....

I guess Ferry brought the blessing and the curse with those two moves. The rest of the league seems bound and determined to never be fooled by #eventheHawks again. Lol.

this is why I dont critictize ferry for not making a trade at the trade deadline as much as others. It is much harder to complete a trade these days. More GMs are overvaluing their own assets. Unprotected 1st rounders are like gold and with more GMs finding gems in the 2nd round like chandler parsons and isaiah thomas, 2nd round picks have sky rocketed this year in value.

Edit: also dont forget about how the new CBA is affecting everybody.

I think fans are so use to being down on the Hawks that they just don't know how to think positive about them. Danny Ferry is the best GM in Hawks history and is 10x's better than most Hawks fans like to give him credit. It's better to not make a move than to make a terrible one. When analysts, other GM's, and other NBA professionals talk nothing but positive things about Atlanta's situation, you know we are in a good spot. Hell, even players around the league see Atlanta in a new light. The standings and current roster means nothing. 2 years as a GM is a blip on the radar for how long it takes to make a contender.

Also, fans saw how Miami made an insta-o-matic contender in 2010 and got a false sense of how contenders are actually made. They aren't manufactured and cooked in a microwave. Making a contenders is slow-n-low BBQ. A lot of preparation and a lot of time in the oven, but oh how sweet it tastes once it's ready.

Ferry deserves praise for that trade as I have said since that trade happened. The only thing I wish we had gotten more was Brooks or Gerald Green. I'm fairly positive that Ferry not being an idiot would have asked for that and was told no so he had to either take that deal as it stood or not do the deal at all. Clearly it is better for our team that we did the deal.
