Commenting on the decision to call off Tuesday's All-Star Game after 11 innings, former commissioner Fay Vincent was critical of baseball's current regime, including commissioner Bud Selig.

"It was just awful," Vincent told ESPN Radio's Dan LeBatard on Sunday. "The general consensus was that it was a disaster for baseball. The brand of baseball was hurt very badly .... How can you not anticipate it going extra innings? It's preposterous.

"The whole thing made baseball look like a joke. Nobody was thinking. The quality of intellectual effort was very, very low. How do you screw up an All-Star Game? These guys managed to do that. That's pretty hard to do. It's almost impossible to have an All-Star Game end on a disastrous note."

He also said the decision to call the All-Star Game a tie is going to raise questions among owners about baseball's leadership.

"I'd be astonished if there aren't a fair number of owners who wonder if they're in the right hands." Vincent said. "Bud seems to have gotten some very bad advice. You can't end it that way. You can't have it end in such a whimper. There has to be a bang. It's entertainment. The one thing he did was the one thing he shouldn't have done."

Selig ultimately replaced Vincent as commissioner after Vincent was pushed out of office by baseball's owners in 1992.

"I think Bud is mad at me for doing what I'm doing now," Vincent said, meaning being critical. "One of the things I said to him was, 'You don't have any credibility because in 1994, you told everyone the world was coming to an end and here we are eight years later and baseball is going on.' The union is saying, 'Don't tell us about the problems. We don't believe you.' If there are problems, let them (the players) have them. Let teams go broke. Three or four teams are sick. A few of the teams may go bankrupt."

Vincent also chimed in on the current state baseball.

"A total mess. If there were stock in baseball, it would be hitting a new low. It's as low as it can possibly go."
