After giving Rice a 2 game suspension Goodell announced that going forward the punishment for a 1st offense is 6 games? Why is Rice suspended indefinitely?

This whole debacle has been mishandled from the start.

I agree, however the issue is why people dont go to the inner city or why they would have a reluctance to go downtown on a weeknight and then have to venture back to MARTA or their parking lot. Been there , done that and seen some crazy things. I didnt say it was a fair perception, but it is what it is - you say people should take things like their personal safety with a grain of salt , but at the same time look at the circus this whole episode has become??

So why arent whites going downtown in large numbers to see the Hawks ??

But why are the same whites going downtown to see the Falcons or Monster Truck shows or Garth Brooks concerts?

The same reason blacks and Hispanics and Asians and Eskimos don't. They go through whatever they go through (traffic jams, lousy parking, scalpers, scammers, panhandlers) to get to the arena and watch Joe Johnson pound the ball through the hardwood, watch Josh Smith shoot from Duluth, watch players the Hawks could have drafted whooping their tailfeathers, watch the Hawks get blown out by 40 against playoff rivals, watch Pero Antić be the one taking at-the-buzzer jumpshots in the playoffs... It's not a proven attraction to get people to overcome whatever perceptions they have, and not enough for those perceptions to make a difference if they move their venue to what people think is some Whitopia but give fans the same-old, same-old. (Our Bravos are about to figure this out in a half-decade or so.) If you're not looking like you're competing, not even a "palace" in Auburn Hills will save you.

Levenson is worried about hauling in larger numbers of white people when larger numbers of white-collar persons of any stripe will do just fine. As I mentioned in another thread about downtown, the Hawks are in a unique position to work with local leaders (many of whom sit on the same boards of directors they do) and help change whatever external perceptions they think keep people satisfied with just watching from home. But it appears to me they haven't done so, and instead of professional market analysis they're shooting from the hip and hitting themselves in the foot.

They gave Rice a 2 game suspension.  Goodell then admitted that wasn't enough and that was in error.

They announced the new policy of 6 games.

Then the video tape came out and it was so brutal and so offended people that the league ramped up into damage control, claimed they had no idea what was on the tape, and that the new information on the tape led them to indefinitely suspend him.

It is going to be a tough issue for the NFL because they have a lot of players that have been involved in domestic violence incidents and it could devolve into something very ugly if the attention is there everytime there is an incident.  There will be lots of second-guessing.

Was funny hearing Barkley say that when he goes to a Nascar race (which surprised the hell out of me) that you can bet his antenna are up seeing all the confederate flags that people have. It's just a natural reaction for most people that when you're the minority, you're likely going to feel uncomfortable. Whether that's racial minority, gender minority, religious minority, whatever.

I think an important point to add is that public outcry caused him to waver each time.  It's not like he decided on his own that it wasn't enough.  Like you said, it's being poorly handled.  His super-arrogant stance isn't helping the league's image either.

This has a chance to really get out of control especially when you have guys like the Browns' suspended WR trying to use this situation to shorten his own ban.

They still do wrasslin' down there too.  Doubt ticket sales from OTP citizens are sagging.  If you have a product people want they'll show up in droves.

Garth Brooks? I thought he was dead. Damn I'm out of touch I guess.

lol - Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood in concert at Phillips from Sept 19th (I have no idea why I should even know that - don't do country).

Edit: I know why - I was looking for Hawks tickets :-(.

You sure it's a concert and not a porno taping? Weren't they caught cheating and it caused his wife to leave him? Damn this feels like a blast from the past from 10 years or so ago.

And it's ok if you let everyone know how country you actually are. Nobody here is gonna judge you if you're a big fan of Garth, Trisha and Darius Rucker ;)

Don't let him drag you into that.  Clearly he's the one that loves country.  Did you see how quickly he rattled off those country acts?  Even knew about some obscure country scandal with Garth Brooks.  Can't fool me @Dolfan23.

Seriously though, my wife listens to a little of the new-ish country music which isn't all that bad.

I'm a Texas boy (well now I am, after growing up mostly in Florida) so of course I like country music.

A lot of the new country music is basically pop music. Some of it is good and some of it is trash. Pretty much the same as every other genre of music, of which I enjoy most of them.

Nice how you used country music as a metaphor for the different races.  Some black/white people are good and some black/white people are trash.  Pretty much the same as every other race ...

Das deep, Dolf.  Das deep.

What the what? Now I love a good metaphor but that was certainly not my intention. Not that what you are saying is not true, but that was definitely not where I was going with that.

I know that's not what you meant.  Just being my typical oddball self.

I didn't know blacks were the majority at garth Brooks concerts or falcons games.

Ah, come on now.  You're being purposely difficult.  You know what the point is that we're trying to illustrate.  Our white brothers/sisters find a way to venture downtown when they want to, and in large numbers for a product they want to partake in.

What do people think happens in the stands at Hawks games with black people as the majority?  I pretty much guarantee that whatever it is it's tamer than whatever happens in the stands at Falcons games, SEC Championship games, etc.

I also think it's debatable to what degree black folks are the majority at Hawks games anyway. It's certainly not 70% black.

You're right about that. It's actually closer to 70% ghosts.
