Hawks alter two-a-day practice details

Quote

The Hawks completed their first three days of training camp at the University of Georgia on Thursday, which included two workouts each on Tuesday and Wednesday. They weren’t the traditional two-a-day workouts as in the past.

The Hawks went through extensive on-court work in morning sessions Tuesday and Wednesday. However, they did very little court work in evening sessions. Instead the session was focused on strength and conditioning, including weight lifting and other work.

“A shift away from the basketball,” Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said after the final workout Thursday. “Hopefully, we got more done in our morning sessions. Especially (Thursday) morning, I thought the energy and the work that we were able to get in on our third day was significantly better. I think a lot of it was because of our (training) staff has done the last few nights.”

It’s an interesting concept. Newcomer Ryan Kelly (who will be feature in a story later today) noted the change in philosophy from his first three seasons in training camp with the Lakers with more of a commitment to conditioning.

Budenholzer said the team got more out of morning sessions, especially the third day, after less court time in the evenings.

“I think you get a lot more out of the third day if you manage the first two a little bit different,” Budenholzer said. “They worked hard in the evenings too but it wasn’t the same pounding and running and active recovery type stuff.

Splitter contines to progress, other injury updates

Quote

After three days of training camp work at the University of Georgia, the Hawks will not hold a formal workout on Friday. They will return to the court on Saturday as part of the free open workout and scrimmage at Philips Arena.

With the exception of Dennis Schröder, the Hawks came out of the first workouts healthy. As previously reported, the Hawks held Schröder out of practice on Thursday with an ankle injury. He will monitored and re-evaluated after a few days.

As for updates of the three players coming back from surgeries:

* Tiago Splitter has been an active participant in workouts after hip surgery ended last season for the center. “I think we feel good about Tiago’s three days of work, how much he was able to get in and how he played when he was in,” coach Mike Budenholzer said. “We tried to keep him more in scrimmage and competitive type environment. I think the whole team marvels what Tiago is doing coming off his surgery and off his injury.”

* Jarrett Jack is being brought along slowly from a torn ACL that ended his last season. The guard competed in most of the non-contact drills on the first day of training camp and Budenholzer said he did “a little bit less” the last two days.

* Paul Millsap had a non-surgical procedure on his right knee recently and will be sidelined for the first three weeks. The forward continues to be “very, very limited” which means his on-court work consists of free-throw shooting
