Premium Member Diesel Posted December 6, 2017 Premium Member Report Share Posted December 6, 2017 If the Hawks tank to the 1st or 2nd worst record in the NBA and is drafting 4 or 5th, would you be willing to say that the draft lottery is rigged?? On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the highest, how mad would you be if we did all of this for the 5th pick?
NBASupes
I would just be happy we got a top 5 pick. This is a great top 5 draft. In other years where #1 is Anthony Davis and number 2 isn't close is when I get mad because you wasted a season and didn't get much to show for it.
Premium Member Jody23 Posted December 6, 2017 Premium Member Report Share Posted December 6, 2017 As is the case with most drafts, there will likely be players taken after the first five picks that will be better players than one or more of the players selected in the top five. The draft position is very important. Identifying the best player long term at that selection is just as, if not more, important.

Sixers drafted Okafor because at that stage, he was the best players even though scouts had questions about his ability to translate. They passed on KP. Said, he is the most raw but has the most potential in the draft. KP is superior to everyone in the class. The Sixers in another draft went long. Embiid was not only the best prospect in his class but the most NBA ready. But injury concerns had scouts and GM's questioning if he could play in the NBA for more than 3 years. The scouts were right to a degree. Embiid in his first three NBA years played fewer games than Oden but Sixers took Embiid's health seriously and won at the end.
Admin capstone21 Posted December 6, 2017 Admin Report Share Posted December 6, 2017 No, I don't think the lottery is rigged (anymore) ... maybe back in the day but not anymore.

If we have the second worst record our odds of getting the 4th or 5th pick are 44.2%. So basically a coin flip. Getting that 4th or 5th pick would be really weak evidence of a conspiracy or rigging when the odds of that happening are over 44%. This draft seems to have enough legit exciting prospects that any top 5 looks pretty compelling so I wouldn't hate that. Of course, I'd rather have my pick of the litter but I can name more than 5 guys I'd be excited about adding to the team right now.

I think that the draft is rigged simply because they don't need it. It doesn't accomplish what they set it up for, so ultimately, it just looks like a way that the League can handpick which markets prosper. They go through all this stuff to tell you that the draft is fair... but then you have to ask yourself, why do we have a draft anyway? What's wrong with the worst team having the best pick? I just find it so coincidental how some teams end up winning the lottery and at what times they do. Moreover, if they rigged the lottery when David Stern put his hand into a barrell with one envelope being Ice Cold.. why would they not continue the process? Admin capstone21 Posted December 6, 2017 Admin Report Share Posted December 6, 2017 The draft isn't rigged ... there is too much transparency now ... it is setup to keep teams from just completely tanking and automatically getting the first pick... it doesn't stop tanking but its an attempt

Philly did it. Cleveland did it. Chicago is doing it. We're doing it. There's nothing halting a franchise from tanking from the beginning of the season. Nobody cares about the lottery.. they are tanking for a shot at the top 6. Bet this. Bet that the NBA would scoff at the idea of making a 30 year plan where everybody knows what pick they will have. That would completely kill tanking. NBA won't do it because they have this lottery to make you believe that it's a deterant... when all it really is is the means to control who gets the best picks. Okafor is going to end up being the Hassan Whiteside of the NBA in about 2 years. Once he finally goes somewhere in which he can fully showcase his offensive talent, he's going to be a steal for anyone who picks him up. What the Sixers are doing with him, is a travesty. What's worse, are these idiot NBA teams ( especially the playoff level teams ), who aren't willing to give up a late 1st round pick for Okafor, and instead, are willing to roll with journeymen centers.

Until he learns to defend, no playoff team is going to want to insert him in their rotation. Sixers have been better with him on the bench. It is why no one has wanted to trade for him over the last year because the price isn't a late 1st anymore - it is a second round pick (and not necessarily a good one).
