NBASupes
We ate both Melo and Bud's contract.
Moderators AHF Posted July 19, 2018 Moderators Report Share Posted July 19, 2018 The Hawks have shown no reservation about spending money except to the extent it would impact their ability to use their cap space. Throw Jamal Crawford on that list as well.

It's definitely a cheap move, seeing that the net result of buying out Melo, instead of paying Schröder and Moose, is a little over 2 million. Keeping Melo ( or Dennis and Moose ) + adding another player, would've shown that they're not being cheap.

We’ve used it every year. Melo costs roughly 7-8M more this season.

Then cheap is the wrong word. Buying expensive crap is not cheap — it is bad stupid spending. Here they are paying dollars to get a clean cap sheet and to accrue future picks. Whether that is smart or not it isn’t cheap.

So instead of the superstar we get medium level free agents which everyone complained about in the past. I guess it's acceptable now.
NBASupes
My guess is Atlanta wants to be major players in the trade market for one year contracts next year. Because all of the major market teams got a max or two contracts. We would be in position in 2020. Maybe if we are good. Giannis might consider the Hawks. Im assuming we are looking to have Young, Collins, Prince, Huerter, our pick this year and Dallas’s pick this year (probably) as a base of talent or to have traded some of them for talent (maybe AD if he tires of NO incompetence?) to be able to pitch high level free agents this coming offseason or the one after that. Will we succeed? Don’t know but that has been a recent (ugly) trend in the league that we appear to be trying to prepare ourselves to exploit. In ilyaso va 's case he was a decent player but not going to put us over the top.

The new trend is to overpay if you want to keep your young draft picks when their contra us expire (a la Schröder , bazemore, etc.

That's not how this works....its not how any of it works. line 23 of the CBAFAQ 23. What is the maximum salary a player can receive? Are there exceptions to the maximum salary? Here are the league-wide maximum salaries for the first season of a new contract: Years in NBA1 Defined maximum salary 2017-18 2018-19 0 - 6 25% of cap $24,773,250 $25,467,250 7 - 9 30% of cap $29,727,900 $30,560,700 10+ 35% of cap $34,682,550 $35,654,150 You see..overpaying for rookies is far different than overpaying for 10 year players on the downward trend. A max contract for a 4 year player is $10 million less than for a 10 year player. The numbers/mistakes are more favorable. This isn't to say that overpaying a 4 year player isn't stupid and can't hamstring you, but their windows are tighter than say "Lebron" or "Love" (or more recently for us...Millsap).
