I am now rooting for Trae Young

It turns out that a co worker of mine that I am friends with is dating an assistant coach at Oklahoma. I don't think it would be appropriate to name him but I've seen the proof that he is dating my co worker.

She is a big basketball fan and she knows I'm a Hawks fan. I move in and out of either working at home or in the office. For the next few months I'll be in the office and we've had a chance to really talk again. I had no idea, full disclosure, that she was dating one of the assistant coaches at Oklahoma before we started talking about the Hawks. I asked her how did the coaching staff feel about Young because I know some players can put up stats but the coaches can't stand them because of their personality.

It turns out Trae is beloved by their coaching staff. Said he was the most coachable kid they have ever had in the program. Lives and sleeps with the basketball. She was showing me all the pictures and signed balls and jerseys that Trae just gave to her kids because he was nice. It was really cute. I had no idea this kid has such a gym rat attitude.

So while I'm not sure he's going to work out like so many of you want him to work out I am hoping and rooting that he does make it big here. He does seem like a really good kid that loves the game for the game and has a great attitude about the game and life. You can't ask for more than that.

Good to hear. I’m now rooting for him, too, mostly because it’s my pattern to get mad at the Hawks for not drafting the guy I wanted on draft night...but to become reconciled and positive by the time the regular season rolls around. Let’s go Trae!!!

Must admit that is good to my ears or eyes or whatever to see...I think Trae is going to really be the Lynch pin that takes the hawk's to another level. Glad you're aboard Sothron...

I do find the timing of this a bit curious considering the Twolves are well into the process of resurrecting the beataBulls in Minnesota.  Lookin' like that up'n'coming(sic) young team's about to get a heavy dose of Luol/Noah minutes.  Is Scalabrine available too?  heh

Yeah, she's told me a number of stories about him that I don't think are repeatable because of it was personal to her, her kids or other people. But Young sounds like a really good, humble kid that loves the game the right way. I can never hate on a guy that has to be chased out of the gym or encouraged to put down the ball to do other things.

The TWolves are fine. Whatever little tread Deng has will be used up in one year with Thibs.

There's no denying this kids will and work ethic and he has set the bar high for himself.  It's just a matter of him being able to put it all together when he hits the floor.

So let me get this straight...for 3 straight months, we tell you that we have a future superstar on our hands in Trae. He’s unselfish, can pass the hell out of the ball, is a team player whose loved by his teammates, coaches and a great number of fans and you reject our assessment of him and insist that he’s a bust and the next Acie Law and go on a huge rant about it...until they put you in a 5x5 working cell with Susan B. Anthony and you’re on the wagon now?

Keep in mind, I'm not saying I think this kid is a superstar. I said I was rooting for him now. I got a look at him as a person that I wouldn't have gotten otherwise except through something like this. Guys that bust their hump and want to bring their team up versus chase personal stats are guys I'm going to root for.

If he is a bust then I will call him out for it. But I'm sincerely hoping that won't be the case.

There are a lot of people who have been skeptical about Young who don't "hate" him either -- just thought he was overrated and will disappoint.
