This was the right selection for the Hawks. He will bring so much more amd be much more valuable to the Hawks than Doncic would habe provided in my opinion.

Schröder wasn't gonna relinquish the offense workload to Doncic to become 'THE' playmaker for the Hawks offense, rendering Doncic null and void.

:Schroder: I was looking for a Homer Simpson avatar but had to use Bart ... Seriously though that's why I have given Schlenk so much praise. Last year I wanted Harry Giles. He was there and than we picked John Collins:ermm:. Than Dorsey :sorry: and I like Kabba with the last pick:secret:... Point is I realized early with Collins just watching workout and pre draft vids but Dorsey??? Every time he touched the floor last year I saw him growing and doing more than I expected and still growing and doing more.

I was upset with the Trae pick because I wanted Bamba but once I saw the Huerter and Spellman pick I knew exactly what Schlenk was doing!  . " My job is to pick the next Steph, Klay and Draymond". Trae by himself although still a good pairing with Prince, Collins and Bembry would not have done it for me. Seeing that he came with a trio in Spellman and Huerter I felt he was an excellent pick.

This years going to be fun!!!!!

“He knows everything we want to do,” Hawks coach Lloyd Pierce said of Young’s grasp of the offense. “ I don’t know if he knows the nuances of how to do it. Does Alex (Len) like it high on the roll or does he want the bounce pass? Does (Kent Bazemore) like it on the shakeup or does he need to spoon feed it? Just those simple little reads of knowing his personnel, his players, he is playing with. When to deliver the pass. Does Alex need to get set when he pops out to the 3(-point line) or can he be on the move? Just being able to stay poised and let the play develop. He knows what we are running. He does it very well. He knows the reads. Now, it’s just figuring out who he is running it for and deliver it the best way he can.”

Not sure how folks can read stuff like that and simply say, "Bwah, they're tryna lose, blah, blah .." and not get that they're trying to teach the guys.

Well, I do know how folks can simply not get it .. #AgendaSquawkLives

I wanted Trae from about mid last season so I was ecstatic we got him (and a pick).   It's a good point though about Dennis and Luka.  I don't think they are an ideal fit.  That's not a great reason to not take Luka but it's a good point.

Trae is going to be the toast of this town sooner than later.

Dennis was going to be traded regardless, so it wouldn't have been Luka and Dennis anyway.

We got zip for Schröder.  Schlenk gave our vet players away.

I was not happy with the pick/trade (still not) at all but it is what it is.

I am hoping to be proven wrong and Trae shows he can hang in the NBA.

I think he is an excellent passer but his size, shot selection, turnovers and terrible defense worries me but with experience I am hoping shot selection/turnovers worries will go away.  I don't hold out hope for defense but there are a lot of bad defenders out there.

I am a Hawks fan and have been for a very long time.  I will cheer for him to do well and hope he does.

Did you consider Iverson or Nash good defenders? I think he will do well on D and far as steals are concerned and obviously being quicker than most. He might get posted up on but I feel like it’s about desire on D. Outside of that I think he will prove people wrong on the shot selection by being pass first but if ur a shooter ur gonna shoot and that’s just the way it goes.

I think we will be an exciting team moving forward with our new quarterback in Trae and start attracting free agents in coming years. Players are gonna want to team up with Trae due to the amazing passing alone. He can increase a players numbers with his vision alone. Yup ? I think you and I became fans the same year 85-86? I dunno I’m more excited about Trae than any other rookie I can remember. I did LOOOOOVE Stacey “plastic man” Augmon as well as used to physically write his stats and cut out boxscores of the Hawks and really dissect his numbers in that 91-92 season. But I think Trae will be the best point guard we’ve ever had in my time. Time will tell.

Trae Young’s first NBA game is Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden. He will start at point guard for the Hawks against the Knicks. It’s the first game of a long season for Young, but it’s also the beginning of an era.

It’s not exactly right to say that the franchise’s future is riding on Young becoming a star. It’s not exactly wrong, either. Young is the first draft lottery selection for general manager Travis Schlenk, who has engineered a losing-for-picks rebuilding strategy.

A strong rookie season for Young would be tangible proof that something better is ahead for the Hawks. It’s a lot to ask. The NBA is hard, especially for teenagers.

Maybe no other rookie will be as scrutinized as much as Young. He was the most famous player in his draft after one hyped season at Oklahoma, and Schlenk’s draft-night trade to acquire him intensified the spotlight.

“Every shot I’ve taken, everything I’ve done is looked at even more,” Young said. “Which is fine. That’s what I worked for. I think it motivates me to push more and more every day.”

Young can’t know what he’s in for. He has an idea after playing five NBA exhibition games, but this will be different. Now it’s real games against grown men in the best basketball league in the world.

Opponents will single out Young for defensive attention and target him relentlessly with pick-and-rolls.  He also will be targeted by detractors eager to declare him a bust. Young will have plenty of bad games, and the Hawks will lose a lot.

One of Hawks coach Lloyd Pierce’s task will be to prevent the weight of expectations from crushing Young.

That is what a coach should say. I’m sure Pierce will do what he can to protect Young from confidence-sapping criticism. There is no avoiding it, though. Young already knows.

Young’s poor shooting at the Utah Summer League became a national NBA story during the offseason news void. Young hadn’t played an NBA game, but some offered his summer struggles as proof that Schlenk erred in trading the rights to European prospect Luka Doncic for Young.

NBA Twitter can be a cruel place.

“Sometimes people forget we are still human,” Young said.

He says this as if acknowledging reality, not seeking sympathy. Young is a pro now and criticism comes with the job. He said he tries to limit his exposure to social media and keeps himself grounded with regular visits from family and close friends.

Young’s job is to filter out the noise and play basketball. I think that, in time, he will be a very good NBA player. He’s a gifted point guard with a superlative ability to read the floor and zip accurate passes.

There’s also a certain toughness to Young’s game that I like. He is slight of build, but stout in spirit. Young has some “dog” in him, as they say in the NBA.

“To me, what I see is the confidence,” Hawks teammate John Collins said.

I see it, too. It’s one reason to believe that, though Young doesn’t know what’s coming, he will handle it. His basketball background is another.

Young gained fame at Oklahoma when he dominated early in the season with highlight-worthy shooting from long range. But his detractors multiplied when he and Oklahoma struggled in the second half. They were waiting for him to fail in those faux games in Utah.

Critics who didn’t like Schlenk’s trade are ready to pile on some more. Doncic’s floor is perceived to be high, while Young is viewed as boom-or-bust. The trade will be at the forefront when Doncic and the Mavericks come to Atlanta next week for the Hawks’ home opener which, not coincidentally, is their only nationally-televised game of the season.

This says a lot:

Quote

Schlenk has done what he can to smooth Young’s path. He’s tried to reassure Young that he was the team’s top choice in the draft. Schlenk has asked fans to have patience with Young while emphasizing that he’s just one piece a long-term puzzle.

Trae Young needed to do so some convincing. Actually, he needed to do a lot of convincing to his father, Rayford.

Trae wanted to go to the Future150 Elite 24 camp in Atlanta as an eighth-grader. Some of the top middle school basketball players, such as Chicago Bulls first-round pick Wendell Carter Jr., Louisville point guard Darius Perry, Auburn shooting guard Jamal Johnson and others, would be there. The registration fees would be covered for the top players, but not Young. If Young wanted to go, his family would have to cover all of the costs.

“I told my dad that I was going to make it worth it if we could go down there and pay for the flights and the registration fee,” Trae said. “I remember talking to him the night before as we drove to the hotel that I was going to win MVP.

“I ended up winning MVP.”

He has never been the tallest, fastest, quickest or most athletic basketball player on the court. But Trae always found a way. He kept draining shots at the camp, so the organizers had no choice but to name him the MVP...[which] propelled him into the national spotlight as an individual.

I'm in the same boat. I had a strong negative reaction to the trade after an entire season of hoping for other players, but I would be thrilled to be proven wrong. And I've seen enough at this point to be hopeful.
