Premium Member JayBirdHawk Posted September 12, 2022 Author Premium Member Report Share Posted September 12, 2022 Interesting Nugget? Quote The 23-year-old guard inked a two-way deal, the Hawks announced Monday. He joins a team that's expected to be in the middle of the Eastern Conference alongside the Raptors vying to avoid the play-in tournament next season. At one point this summer it seemed as though Culver was destined to join the Raptors. He was seen wearing Raptors attire at the Rico Hines runs, playing alongside most of Toronto's players. Scottie Barnes even hinted that Culver was set to sign in Toronto while streaming on Twitch.
Premium Member sturt Posted September 12, 2022 Premium Member Report Share Posted September 12, 2022 TOR already was one of those teams with several decisions to make in the eventual cut down to 15. Maybe at "one point this summer" it was plausible, but that was awhile ago now.

In fact, I wanted him over DeAndre Hunter. Hunter proved to be the better player. Now the Hawks have both players.
Dejay
Wow, I remember folks here wanting to take him with the 6th pick before the Hawks moved up to take Hunter. Now they got Culver for a song. Uhm, can he play? 2

In general, I like moves like this.

We needed some more PG depth so in that sense of course this move makes sense and is fine by me. But it's beyond obvious Culver is not a needle mover and probably never will be. He was abysmal in Minny.

Premium Member sturt Posted September 13, 2022 Premium Member Report Share Posted September 13, 2022 Unless you thought you could possibly turn Culver into some defensive monster unicorn PG, I never understood the optimism. To me, that was... and remains... the one way he conceivably could prove worthy of his draft slot. That's what I would hope would be the Schlields vision... send him to College Park to play beside Etienne and Forrest, with all three taking turns at running the team. He was abysmal in Minny. Right. They rarely do. You might get a year or two in their late 20s that they emerge as 2nd unit material, but that tends to be the ceiling. If you were looking for more PG depth, it's less certain that Culver is going to get PG minutes even in College Park--though, as I just posted, I would hope they'd try, simply b/c I believe that's the one route to him becoming an asset worthy of a high draft slot. That said, that's more about developing him than it is filling a void for the team...

Premium Member Popular Post sturt Posted September 13, 2022 Premium Member Popular Post Report Share Posted September 13, 2022 Strongly disagree that Cam's a bust. He's a victim of a really bad situation where the head coach and GM were not on the same page, and he's paid the price then of the old adage, "Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it." He's barely played since he left ATL. It would be different if he'd gotten to NYK and was given a legitimate shot at the rotation, and only fell out of favor after a half season or so of games. Sometimes it's more about the coach and his system than it is about the player's capabilities. Don't misread... he still obviously has something to prove, just as he had something to prove when he left here. But until he actually receives a legit opportunity to do that, I consider him a prisoner awaiting the end of his sentence, and maybe just that much more motivated when he finally gets out. And maybe this break, too, allows his body time to reinvigorate so that he doesn't experience the health struggles he did while in ATL. 3
thecampster
This why Culver went so high. The problem is Culver never developed a 3 point shot in the NBA, shooting under 30%. If he could get to just 35% from 3, he'd be a great pickup. The problem is his 3 pt shot is unnatural compared to his more normal contact, rise and shoot feel. No player ever needed a shooting coach more, because he's able to play the rest of the game adequately.

I think they saw defense. Good ball passing. Could be somebody who could work his way up. They gave him a shot.
