When did I say that age is the only difference between the 2? I said the gap will narrow in time. And yes. The gap will narrow. That’s a nice strawman argument for Bruno/Clint, but nowhere close to apples to apples. Griffin came out of college after a single season. Hunter had 3 to learn the game. He’s 19 still learning the nuance of the game. He will never be a defensive stopper. I never said he would. But to expect him to not be better than he is today is silly. Or maybe some posters on this site don’t understand player development. and when his defense gets to average. His offense will be far more impactful to the team. And thus the total package is more valuable to me. and for the record. I’m a big Deandre fan. No, simply no. I am going to be honest. This is a really bad post with good intentions. I am not attacking you personally, but just the post. Man, this is a bad post 1. Age isn't that big a deal for individual defense. Team defense, sure, I agree but for individual defense, no. 2. Dre didn't play the 3 till the Hawks. He was a 4 at UVa. He guarded the other teams best players, sometimes that was a 1, 2, 3 or 4. Griffin played the 3 at Duke. He was a 3 with us the minute Bogi came back and his defensive production fell off and his team defense which has always been bad became unbearable. Then again, young players generally are bad team defenders. 3. His age isn't going to change his traits. That's the big issue. He has the same lateral issues as Bey without any of the instincts Bey has. How do you expect him to be anywhere near Hunter who can move his feet very well for his size laterally? 4. There is no player development that's gonna make him a defensive specialist as well as Bey. They don't have the traits. They don't move anywhere near well enough for their position. Same for JC defending wings. He can barely stay in front of bigs. I still remember Ersan cooking him time and time again off the dribble drive. 5. Quotes like this is why I hate this site at times "And just to get you really riled up. for such a shit defensive player. when AJ is on the court with trae at the 3 - we gave up 111.5 pts/100. With Dre we gave up 113.9. And Bey? 116.2." Tell me you don't know shit about the shit you are talking about is obvious when I see shit statements like this. 6. You aren't a Dre fan. If you are, you need to renounce that shit. Do you think Aaron just can develop passing like Trae? Come on man, why is the stupid shit always said in reference to defense on this site. Hawks may wait until their wanted player is drafted by another team, then make a deal for him. This is the way Atlanta ended up with Trae. The closer the draft comes the more I think that this may be the plan. We all have our favorite draft player but we don't really know which one that the Hawks desire. Horsewind reported yesterday that the first shoe has dropped in POR, ie, that the decision is made to keep the #3 pick. That would strongly suggest the next shoe will drop, sending Dame to BRK, MIA, or some other team lurking behind the curtain. A lot of fog clears as soon as that happens. But still seems most likely to me that any moves Landry, Korver, Snyder and Associates Inc make hinge on who drops in the draft, or does not. Makes sense that we won't know anything until sometime during Thursday's extravaganza.

A.J. hasn't shown us anything defensively reliable defending 2s which he's best at. He was ass defending 1s and 3s. As bad as Bey if not worse. Using measurements, you might as well mention JC, his measurements aren't much different either. I wish the BBIQ on here was better, especially in regards to defense. Offense, this site is better than most but defensively, might be the worst Basketball site by a mile. This is the only place other than Hawks Reddit and twitter that tries to say Trae isn't a terrible defender. I love A.J. mainly for his offense but defensively, he has no versatility. It's worse than JC who has no defensive versatility. Age doesn't really explain it. He's just not good on defense. A.J. has more defensive flaws than Bey. Seriously. What the f*** is wrong with our posters and terrible defensive opinions? AJ was a rookie and you talking like he a five year vet. To me, AJ offensively is a 2/3 and defensively eventually will be able to guard 2/3/ and some 4s adequately. That's not saying all defense out there. He got ate up on defense at times but show marked improvement from his college film. He wasn't healthy during last summer and now he is. I expect a leap offensively and defensively this year. I think we agree to a degree, but are talking past each other at this point. I have confidence that AJ will improve on the team defense aspect which will bring him up to a league average defender. I would project him to follow a JC type path to a league average defender. Not elite. Not a stopper. Average - which I've been clear on.] 3. His age isn't going to change his traits. That's the big issue. He has the same lateral issues as Bey without any of the instincts Bey has. How do you expect him to be anywhere near Hunter who can move his feet very well for his size laterally? [I don't ever expect him to be at Hunter's level. I said the gap would narrow - that's it. And part of the reason I said I see him as a future 3 is because of his lateral speed. Yet you want to put him at 2 against guys who are typically quicker? I could see us hiding him on 2s that aren't exactly great offensive players, but his primary position is still, to me, at the 3.] 5. Come on man, why is the stupid shit always said in reference to defense on this site. [Welcome to Strawman City. Population: Supes. There was a thread a few months back where I defended Dre. Saying he could be the #3 on a title winning team. So yes, I am a fan. But I believe in AJ's future more. That's not disrespect to Dre. That's the same as me saying I'd rather keep Trae than DJ.]

I think the help defense aspect is what is keeping him from being an elite defender right now. With that said, De'Andre being in the line up allows you to shift the defensive responsibilities at other positions. I think AJ is a player you can pair with De'Andre when his help defense improves, but he will never be the on the ball guy that De'Andre is. What I would like to see is a very strong defensive four added to the mix. I really love OO's defensive potential at center. I think he can be elite despite his size. That's why I'm so high on Jarace Walker. I think he's a four that can be a strong defender as well as space the floor with his shooting. EDIT: I also think you will see a far more efficient offensive version of Hunter now that he's in a real offense. He can PDS. He can really shoot. He has a good feel for the game. He has a nice pace to his game. Defensively, it was a mess at Duke. Hell, it was a mess here once Bogi came back on D for Griffin.
