8 standout prospects from 2024 NBA Draft Combine

Baylor Schierman (Creighton)

If an MVP were awarded for the scrimmage portion of this week’s events, Schierman would have earned it. The 6-foot-7 guard was 11-for-18 through two games and averaged 13 points, all of which were quality looks. Schierman shot 38% on 3-pointers in his senior season, proving to be a capable rebounder and passer for the Bluejays. He was locked in all week and competed in every test, drill and scrimmage. His high hoops IQ could be an asset to any NBA franchise as are his shooting ability, versatility and motor.

Nikola Djurisic (Serbia)

If Schierman was the MVP, Djurisic might have been the most talented. A member of the Mega Basket family of the ABA, that produced reigning Kia MVP Nikola Jokic and Nikola Topic, a potential 2024 lottery pick. The 6-foot-8 player is highly effective off the pick and roll as both a passer and a scorer from all three levels. Djurisic, 20, scored 16 points in 20 minutes in his final scrimmage, displaying his ability to create space off the dribble to get to his spots. He also has playmaking prowess and sneaky athleticism. Djurisic made a strong case this week to be a first-round pick in the 2024 Draft after this showing.

Coleman Hawkins (Illinois)

This second-team All-Big Ten performer has an interesting situation: he can exercise his extra year of college eligibility or stay in the draft after his week in Chicago. A quintessential pick-and-pop forward at 6-foot-10, Hawkins displayed robust offensive skills and finished with 17 points (on 6-for-7 shooting) in his final scrimmage. Hawkins finished around the rim consistently and showed his mobility and passing ability all week. The lone concern regarding Hawkins’ game may be on defense.

Boogie Ellis (USC) vs. KJ Simpson (Colorado)

This matchup between two smaller guards was one of the more entertaining ones this week. Ellis, one of the select players called up from the G League Elite Camp, impressed Tuesday with 11 points, five rebounds and five assists in 18 minutes. The 6-foot guard is explosive off the bounce and can get to the rim consistently.

Simpson, similar to Ellis, plays bigger than his size. The 6-footer averaged 13.5 points through two games, showcasing his knack for finishing above bigger defenders and rebounded capably.

Both guards communicated well and were focused on the intangibles in both games. Their competitiveness and leadership stood out and made their matchup entertaining.

Oso Ighodaro (Marquette)

At 6-foot-9 with a strong frame, Ighodaro can defend multiple positions and rebound. The 21-year-old showed his ability to set solid screens and switch onto smaller players. Despite not being a perimeter threat, Ighodaro scored 11 points on 4-for-4 shooting.

Adem Bona (UCLA)

One of the most physically gifted prospects in Chicago, Bona’s athleticism and imposing physique stood out. The 21-year-old Nigerian manned dunker spot effectively with his finishes at the rim and can protect the basket on defense.

Jamal Shead (Houston)

He measured just 6 feet tall at the Combine, but Shead stood tall all week. Using his stout frame and scrappy demeanor, Shead averaged 14 points and five assists in Chicago. After much success at Houston, Shead hopes to find a rotational role in the NBA by using his pestering ball pressure and overall toughness.

Additional standouts: Dalton Knecht, Devin Carter, Alex Karaban

Easily be the best pick for us. I think it would be like Deron Williams to the Jazz. Optimal PG and coach, PnR based, paint based offense which is a must for Edey. Edey is the best off ball player in this draft. Deron literally turned that Jazz team into a competitive team as a rookie. Soph had them contending in a difficult western conference and unlocked Carlos Boozer who no one expected to become an all star player out of Cleveland or Duke.

Deron was in everyone convo for best young PG against CP3. That's who I compare this pick with if he gets drafted by Atlanta. I actually think Edey stats, impact on wins and impact will be higher for us than Deron was for Utah.

It would be the worst #1 overall pick in the history of the NBA.  Think about it.  You are willingly taking a guy who doesn’t fit the modern NBA with the first pick all because he’s big.  It’s a guarantee that he will never be a starter in the NBA, and to constantly promote him as this savior of the franchise tells me all I need to know about the thinking involved.   This is a player who wouldn’t even go in the first round in deeper draft.

Optimal fit with Trae

Two time national Player of the year

Best off ball player in the draft

Terrific athlete for a center

7'5 299 pounds

Good drop coverage 5

While this won't be Wemby or LeBron, saying he would be the worst isn't close to possible. He's at the least with us being the top 25. His resume is as good Ralph Sampson and he's clearly better than players like Andrew Bogut who's the median for 1st overall picks.

I know you hate him so you will cry about this pick till his rookie year begins but realistically, this would be a massive lie.

Wrapped up combine stuff

I really saw things I liked from the combine game. Some guys moved to the low end of tier 4 due to their play.

Big testing winners.

1. Kel'el Ware- Only bad was his wingspan was 7'4 instead of 7'7 which means normal for his size. That said, his athletic metrics were off the charts for a true 7ft. This seen him shoot up my BB back to the low end of tier 4.

2. Zach Edey - Somehow had a growth spurt and is now 7'5 with shoes. Yao Ming lane. His athletic metrics vastly improved outside of spirit speed. Edey is continuing to get better each year.

3. Reed Sheppard- the measurements was poor as expected but the testing results showed why he is that guy. I think he's locked in as a top 5 pick.

Big loser

1. Donovan Clingan- While he did well in shooting drills for his position, he really struggled at testing

Last for Centers at everything but vertical and standing vertical.

While he is a very fluid athlete, I think his ability to play extremely hard with no care about pace and his smooth dunks had people thinking he's a better athlete than Edey when he's nowhere close.

Clingan was last or 2nd to last for all position players as well. While his numbers are similar to players like Gobert and better to be honest, Edey showed what I saw on tape was real. Edey is a freak athlete for his size. Clingan is a good athlete for his size and he's very fluid.

2. Justin Edwards - He did not look good at all. Man, he looked bad. If he gets drafted, he will have to pray to stick.

3. Keyshawn George - he was someone that needed a big day and he didn't have one. I am wondering if he's a 2nd rounder

I just read someone calling Clingan a weird hybrid of CC and Mason Plumlee that's 7'2. That might be a good one. Like Plumlee, stamina issues, can really pass, terrific finisher, but like CC, very fluid, terrific screener as a younger player, and just limited af while being an excellent drop coverage 5.

Good one.

I think Clingan is underrated but overrated.

Lmao. I can't lie. He even goes all out like Mason does. It was a pretty spot on description and rarely do I give people props for that either. Even I limit it because it's always wrong in a way. Every player is their own

The Cc and Plumlee hybrid with some Priest Lauderdale.  I am not a fan.  I think Edey will be much better of the two.

He's fluid af, my man Priest had negative fluidity but I agree will eventually be the better of the two depending on where they land.
