We should now officially consider Bruno part of the DJM trade since the way that trade was constructed led directly to us cutting him.  Still want to know why they didn't do the trade with Jonas V and removing Zeller.  Might never get an answer to that.

This Zeller snafu still looms large since we ended up cutting Bruno. But on top of that because he was signed for more than the vet min contract of $3.3 mil, Hawks don't get to take advantage of the $2.1 mil value that counts against the cap for vet min deals. Instead, it's the entire $3.5 mil that counts against the cap.

Might not ever know, but at this point why keep Zeller over Bruno?  Do they see Zeller as a better player?  Or do they want a higher dollar contract for a possible future trade?

This is what negotiating with leverage looks like.  For whatever reason, NO and Atlanta decided not to combine their trade with the Jonas trade.  As a result, NO had to include Zeller or give up a real player and Atlanta had no appetite to try to push value at that point.  So despite Zeller not even being worth a minimum and despite the negative implications for the Hawks, he refuses to sign for a minimum contract and Landry agrees to give him more than the vet minimum.  Cody "You are Lucky If I'm Healthy for Half the Season or Average More than My 1.8 Points and 2.6 Rebounds per Game" Zeller used our desperation and weak spine reputation to squeeze us for extra juice to our detriment and we just took it to get the deal done with no sweetener from NO.  This is a microcosm for the current state of the Hawks.  A problem that seems to have been entirely avoidable and NO gets what they want at no additional cost, Zeller gets extra from us forcing us to cut a better player, and we take all the negatives.

So we keeping Zeller looks like .

going to be some mad fans when they realize there’s no plans to bring in a true backup point.

Those of you who aren’t blind can see that every move is to be cheap. So why wouldn’t they just go with Bogi ?

Because keeping Zeller means staying under the tax line without having to make any other moves.

It's because our GM stands for generally mediocre.

So cutting Zeller and paying Bruno would mean both salaries count towards the tax?  I never understood what our options were with Zeller.

Bruno extended his deadline twice to give us time to make room for him on the roster. We obviously couldn’t find a suitable deal out there and with Brunos deadline approaching this week, they decided not to extend it again and let him talk to other teams.

I saw this coming and tried to warn everyone who thought Bruno was coming back. Nance likely is the reserve center now but I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets shipped out too to save us money.

If you cut him, his money still counts against the cap. The most we can do is offer a buyout to reduce the full cap hit fir whatever that buyout number is.

Why would he take a buyout for less than what his contract is, unless he has another team lined up for a vet min slot. (Salaries would offset.)

Yes, towards the over cap charge.

He just turned 21 and put up like 24/8 on almost 58% shooting in the G league last season.  He's a real player. Very solid signing by the team.

Not poo pooing the Hawks propensity to snatch mediocrity from the jaws of excellence, but so what? This FO pizzes mediocrity.  Smdh. Landry and his pals got us again.

I hate to lose Bruno but some of y'all are acting like we waived prime Shaq.  Zeller or Bruno was our 4th best option at Center regardless of who we kept.  Leverage to trade Clint or another center probably slipped a little with folks knowing we had a roster crunch and an oversupply of centers.  NBA teams don't typically make it easier for other teams unless it benefits them in some way.  This was the logical reason because regardless of how cheap Ressler has been, it was the smart move.  If we're going to pay the tax, let it be for someone who will actually be a rotational piece or a real difference maker.  Not a 13-15th man.
