What’s our starting lineup for 24-25 season?

Right now i'm concerned about our shooting.  If Bogi and Zacc are playing a lot then we're in good shape.   Hunter has a good career 3 point % but hasn't proven to be a consistent knock down threat.  Vit, DD, Kobe, JJ, OO are all works in progress.

NBA Southeast Division Rotation and Roster Battles

ATLANTA HAWKS

WING ROTATION

The Hawks aren’t really rebuilding, but resetting. And Atlanta is attempting to do so on the fly. Nowhere on the roster is more of a work in progress than the wing rotation.

It looks like De’Andre Hunter and Jalen Johnson will start at the two forward spots as interchangeable players. The shooting guard spot is a three-way competition between veteran Bogdan Bogdanovic, first overall pick Zaccharie Risacher and Dyson Daniels.

If those five guys aren’t enough, Vit Krejci is firmly in the mix for regular minutes, as is shooting specialist Garrison Mathews. And Larry Nance Jr. will figure into the four/five rotation, which may push down other players to more minutes at the three.

None of this is bad. The Hawks are in a good spot to have players earn their minutes. Johnson is the best of this bunch, as he’s already shown he’s a long-term part of Atlanta’s future. Bogdanovic is the next most proven. The question for him is if he should be coming off the bench or starting. As a reserve, Bogdanovic is a potential Sixth Man of the Year. It also should help Quin Snyder manage minutes for the veteran a bit more.

Risacher has looked better in the preseason than he did in Summer League, which is exciting. He’s got the potential for rapid improvement and he’s going to play plenty. Daniels gives the Hawks a nice big guard option alongside Trae Young, but his lack of a consistent jumper is still holding him back somewhat.

Snyder is going to have make some tough decisions as long as everyone is healthy. Bet on Johnson, Bogdanovic, Risacher, Hunter and Daniels all playing plenty. The others may have to wait until an injury, or a trade, opens up more minutes.

I had advocated Bogi starting with Daniels but watching preseason I think Daniels is a lock for the 2 guard and Hunter will be the opening day starter at the SF barring injury.  But i expect Zacc to get as many minutes as Hunter.   He is way more dangerous and should learn to be a better defender quickly.

If OO isn't playing,  i'm intrigued to see what this lineup can do for short spurts: Trae/Bogi/Zacc/Hunter/Nance.  Offensively this could be scary.

So Hunter starts at the 3 and we get a 3-way battle of Bogi, Zacc, and Dys at the 2?

Spoiler

More likely Zacc / Hunter battle it out at 3, Bogie comes off the bench, and Dys starts at 2

I think Trae + Dyson is locked in.

JJ is locked in.

Bogi has mastered his 6th man role and will lead the bench unit.

Zacch v Dre is the battle to watch

CC v OO is a battle that really doesn’t matter who wins since they will both play roughly the same.

Nance gets reserve big man minutes.

Kobe v Vit for the 10th man slot is a sleeper battle.

Agree with all of this.  The interesting part of our rotation is more around who Quin overlaps the most between the starters and the bench.  I imagine he will want Trae+Risacher to get a decent amount of time on the court together but Trae+Bogi has historically destroyed opposing benches.  I think the question is more around who does Kobe fit well with, and I think that's Bogi.  I wouldn't be surprised to see a decline in Trae+Bogi minutes this year in favor of more balanced lineups

While I think our best lineup might be DD / BB, I'm good with Dyson / Zacc starting.  DD / Hunter starting feels like a recipe for us falling behind out of the gate in a lot of games.  Not a lot of punch or spacing especially with CC starting as well.

If I were deciding, I would have Dre coming off the bench for sure and would be deciding between Bogi and Risacher as the other wing along with Daniels to start the season.

Apparently, there is an online debating raging online between Haeks fans on whether the Starting Shooting Guard spot should go to Dyson or Kobe.

The arguments are thusly:

Dyson doesn't bring enough on offense to start.

Dyson is exceptional on defense so he should start.

Kobe is more SG than PG so that should be his natural position.  Brings more offense than Dys so he should start. And his defensive is still good enough.

Thoughts Squawk? Discuss.

Not much to discuss from where I sit. Bufkin isn't even in my rotation (see above). Credit to him for having a fantastic preseason game vs. OKC, but that only makes it a tougher decision whether to insert him over Vit for the backup PG job... not whether to insert him over Dyson for the starting SG job. Not yet, at least. But let the meritocracy commence. Big fan of meritocracy here.

After dealing Dejounte Murray to the Pelicans this offseason, the Hawks do not have a defined backup point guard. Since the Hawks have several players who can handle the ball, who can pass and who can shoot, that role could fall to at least three or four players. “Trae, the way that he plays and what he does for our team, is unique,” Hawks coach Quin Snyder said Saturday. “So, I don’t look at it as a positional thing where (we) talk about backup this. It’s the same way you look at a wing. Dyson (Daniels) is not Hunt’s (De’Andre Hunter) backup, Zacch’s (Zaccharie Risacher) not Dyson’s backup. Bogi’s (Bogdan Bogdanovic) not Zacch’s backup. Like you have players, and the most important thing is (how) the team functions. And that means, when I say functions, it’s successful.”

(Which is consistent with the thought that only recently struck me... depth charts don't really capture the reality... and so I've transitioned to the above, outlining the first three substitutions, and then an approximate average # of minutes for each.)

Smh I just don’t see the value in starting Hunter with the rookie being a better fit.

Also even with Dysons offense not being fully developed yet, dudes defense is so exceptional it makes absolutely no sense he isn’t the starting 2 in my mind. Trae generates plenty of top 5 offensive ability with the other 3 players.

what we need is defenders who are relentless and get at it.

I believe Synder don’t want to jump to conclusions or afraid to tell his team the reality.

i don’t even dislike Hunter the way this board do I just know he’s better off the bench. Here we go though , with our starting SF built like a tank but can’t rebound.

The whole idea of Kobe starting the season as the stating SG just seems beyond ridiculous to me:

1) If Quin thought he was potentially going into the starting lineup, he would have played him more last year like he did with JJ;

2) As you say, Quin hasn’t played him with Trae during the preseason or had him defending starting SGs.  That would seem an essential part of the preseason if you were going to make him a starter;

3) As far as I’m concerned, it is an open question whether Trae / Kobe would be too small together defensively.  I have to be convinced they won’t have some of the same liabilities as Trae / DM;

4) We can’t afford to sink this team with an unready rookie and while preseason doesn’t mean much I have yet to see Kobe looking like someone ready to deliver consistency in anything.  This is your season to sell Trae on staying.  This isn’t it.

There are just zero indicators of it and I’m not even sure why anyone would be rooting for it. Bogi is a much better scorer.  DD is a much better defender.  Kobe is just starting his NBA career.  Let him learn off the bench.

That last part….”our season to sell Trae on staying”

yeah you don’t talk about starting Bufkin next to Trae if you’re serious about winning games. Secondly with this being our season to sell Trae on staying long term you must ask yourself, when are we going to start prioritizing defense around Trae ???….you got the point of attack defender that’s been needed for years in Dyson…USE HIM….Dyson should get the start to bring the defensive intensity. I am a believer that Traes gravitational pull will give Dyson a peace of mind that will not only improve his shot but help make it consistent as he learns where his spots on the floor are with Trae.

I really do believe we have plenty of offense in a lineup of Trae, Dyson, Risacher, Jalen, CC or OO….CC will always be a lob threat even if teams know it’s coming . Risacher off ball talent is phenomenal especially for a rookie. Jalen has all star level talent waiting to unleash. I’m not concerned about the offense this season, we need to figure how, how we are going to improve defensively as a whole.
