Admin
According to Peter Gammons the HUGE Randy Johnson deal is complete and has been submitted to Selig's office for approval. That should take no more than 24 hours. The Yankees will then have 72 hours to work out an extension with Johnson, the D-Backs will have 72 hours to do the same with Shawn Green, and then finally Brad Penny has to pass a physical with the D-Backs. The final deal looks like this: To the Yankees Randy Johnson Kaz Ishii 2-3 million cash to offset Ishii's salary To the D-Backs Brad Penny Shawn Green Yhency Brazoban (Dodgers reliever) Brandon Weeden (Dodgers starting pitcher prospect) To the Dodgers Javier Vazquez Dioner Navarro (Yankee C prospect) Eric Duncan (Yankee 3B prospect) Also, the Dodgers are talking to the White Sox about sending Vasquez to them in exchange for Paul Konerko, reliever Damaso Marte and starter Jon Garland. Some more ripples from this deal could include the Dodgers preparing a huge offer to JD Drew of 5 years and 55-60 million dollars. That seems like an awful lot for a guy who has had only 1 really good year. Another thing that will likely happen once this deal is finalized will be the Yankees moving on Carlos Beltran. Supposedly they are wanting to wait until Jan 8th when the Astros lose negotiating rights on him until May. This deal could also signal Carlos Delgado being offered a big contract by the Dodgers since they will have freed up some much cash.
andycard69
LA pulled out of the trade for good reason they were getting screwed. They would have given up a lot and gotten a couple of prospects and major downgrades in the pen and starting pitching.
Admin
They werent getting screwed......IF.....they would have gotten Konerko, JD Drew or Delgado or another big bat to replace Green. They were getting the Yankees 2 best prospects, 1 of the better young pitchers in the game, and a ton of financial freedom. I think in the end they couldnt finalize the deal with the White Sox for Konerko, Marte, and Garland.....and/or couldnt get Drew to agree to sign. I dont believe that this deal is dead, but it will just go in a different direction now.
Admin
The Dodgers had 2 motives for making this deal. One, to get enough dollars freed up to sign JD Drew and stay at the same payroll as last year. Two, to move Javier Vasquez on to the White Sox to get another young starter Garland, a good young reliever Marte, and most importantly the BIG bat of Konerko. Apparently Vasquez told the Dodgers that he wouldnt play for them and refused to take his physical for them, and they couldnt get a deal worked out with the White Sox yet. Vasquez then said he would only play for an east coast team. SO, this deal is not completely dead yet.....if the Sox and Dodgers can work out this deal, then the whole monster deal will be back on again.......but who knows if that will happen or not.
