SALT LAKE CITY – The Dallas Mavericks and Atlanta Hawks battled on the second day of the Rocky Mountain Review on Saturday. Atlanta pushed a five-point halftime lead into a 17-point lead late in the fourth quarter and went on to win 88-76. The Hawks used a 14-5 run to pull away in the fourth quarter. Atlanta's Arthur Johnson scored 14 points and added 10 rebounds in 12 minutes of play. First round draft pick Marvin Williams added 11 points, making just 4-of-13 field goals. Neither team looked sharp playing in its second game. Dallas committed 16 turnovers in the first half, 25 for the game, and shot just 62.5 percent from the free throw line. However, the Mavericks battled back from a 13-point deficit late in the second quarter to cut the Hawks' lead to five, 40-35 at halftime. Felipe Lopez dented the Hawks' lead in the second quarter, scoring seven points in less than three minutes, to bring the Mavericks within four, 35-31. Williams struggled in the first half, hitting just 2-of-8 shots from the floor. Atlanta was missing second-year star Josh Childress who sprained his ankle in Friday's game against Utah. Lopez led the Mavericks with a game-high 19 points, on 7-of-13 field goal attempts. Teammate Rawle Marshall added 17 points and five steals for the Mavericks.

I will be curious to see if Johnson has another game like this. So far in 2 games he has 16 pts & 14 boards in 23 minutes. He is only 6'9, but he is 255 lbs.

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH (July 16, 2005) -- Behind a balanced attack and solid bench play, the Hawks evened their record at 1-1 at the Rocky Mountain Revue with an 88-76 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday.

"I thought our guys responded well (to yesterday's loss)," said Hawks summer league coach Larry Drew. "Defensively, at the start of the game, we really established ourselves. For the most part, we did a really good job on that end."

After the Mavs scored the first five points of the game, the Hawks responded with the next six thanks to good ball movement and unselfish play.

Atlanta's rookie draft picks hooked up for a nice play towards the end of the first quarter, with Salim Stoudamire finding Marvin Williams for a breakaway dunk to put the Hawks up, 18-11. At the end of the period, the lead remained seven (20-13).

In the second, the Hawks got a nice spark off the bench, especially from a trio of subs, who helped propel Atlanta to a 40-35 halftime lead after Dallas had cut the lead to two at 35-33.

"I thought we had some guys come off the bench and really step up tonight," Drew said. "Tre Simmons, Jason Conley and (Gyasi) Cline-Heard all did a really good job. Those guys didn't get a lot of minutes yesterday, but I gave them minutes today, and they responded."

Arthur Johnson (who started at center and finished with team-highs of 14 points and 10) and Royal Ivey (started in place of the injured Josh Childress) paced the Hawks with six apiece in the first half. Coach Drew wasn't shy, as thirteen different Hawks saw the court in the first.

Atlanta extended the lead to as many as 13 in the third as Josh Smith asserted himself with some spectacular plays on both ends. His rejection of Dallas' Rawle Marshall with 3:40 left in the period brought the crowd to its feet.

Late in the third, Ivey came out of the game after straining his left Achilles on a breakaway layup. He didn't return to action and will be re-evaluated tomorrow.

In the early stages of the fourth, the Hawks kept the Mavericks at arms length as they continued to execute well on the offensive end and withstand Dallas' rally attempts. The lead climbed to as many as 18 at 79-61 midway through the quarter. Despite seeing the lead dwindle to five (81-76) with under two minutes remaining, the Hawks made their free throws and hung on for the 12-point win.

Marvin Williams finished the night with 11 points and 4 boards, whiled Conley added 10 points and 4 rebounds. Salim Stoudamire and Cline-Heard had nine each, while three Hawks (Ivey, Simmons and Josh Smith) had eight apiece. Felipe Lopez (19) and Rawle Marshall (17) paced Dallas.
