Lascar78
Quote: I'd add "homophobe" to the litany of sins. I'll admit to being a misofrancist (think misogynist, but with 'franco' as a root), but this is the 21st century. No room for the lame 'butt buddy' stuff. Oh I know, I'm half french and I take note. But I'm also well aware that cheap shots and silly insults won't get anywhere on a basketball board. Especially in dissuading hate, which is almost inherently irrational. Interesting to see that you think that some forms of hate are acceptable at certain points in time while others are not. Interesting.

Lascar78
Quote: But this one would be embarrassing because with NEW ownership... However, this move would signal lots of things to FAs about our organization... Seems to me like you're changing your stance to what I was saying, which is that this is only embarassing if we do in fact get cold feet and the deal falls through
TheRedStripes
Maybe Belkin is going to screw up everything in an attempt to ruin the franchise even more and to get the other owners to sell to him and at an even lower price haha i hope not, im not saying i think that IS whats going on...just a thought... Premium Member Diesel Posted August 3, 2005 Premium Member Report Share Posted August 3, 2005 No LASCAR.. Right now, this is already embarrassing. The longer the "snag" goes on, the more embarrassing it becomes. IF we fail to get JJ.. Then we might as well not try to get any big name free agents as long as BK is here because we have thoroughly proved that he doesn't have the power to work out a deal... NOW... You can try and dissect these points. Try to find a spot to disagree... Make a stand and get your soap box... But at the end of the day, Diesel is still right! drzachary
"Hatred" of the French is based on over two hundred years of politics, and even then it's more of a strong dislike. It's also somewhat justified. (Plus, it's in style!) Homophobia is more of the 'hate that which is different than you' variety, like racism towards blacks, or towards Andrew Bogut! (And it's very out of style.) Sorry to hijack the thread! Back to hoops, all.

Moderators AHF Posted August 3, 2005 Moderators Report Share Posted August 3, 2005 Lascar - That isn't necessarily true. There are people who hate the French because they are French (like people hate Jews for being Jewish, etc.) but there are political reasons to hate the French for many people that are entirely unrelated to inherent bias. For example, if someone hates any nation who speaks out against the war in Iraq that is totally unrelated to the type of bias associated with racism. Lascar78
That is not the French that is a president. I don't hate americans despite my hatred for Bush and his administrating. Anytime you stereotype over 50 million people and put them in a box and hate them, you're not being rational. If you don't think that half the arab world claims to only hate the jews because of their occupation of palestine, you're out of your mind. But I've seen all forms of hatred and stereotyping and I know I'm not going to convince anyone. I know that people who want to hate will always find good justifications. Plainview1981
I agree with LASCAR. I've thought the whole "hate the French" thing is really stupid.

Moderators AHF Posted August 3, 2005 Moderators Report Share Posted August 3, 2005 I am just saying that a lot of people do say they hate "the Americans" because of our foreign policy and I don't think that is comparable to racism. (Just for reference, I also have thought the "lets hate the French" kick of the last few years was pretty juvenile peaking with the "freedom fries" moment). There's a difference in hating a person, or persons, violently, and disliking a country's politics and making fun of it (I.e. white flags, brioche for german generals, "why do streets line the streets of paris? / so the germans can march in the shade!" That kind of thing.) I guess you could say that I don't hate the French people, I hate the terrible influence the French government has had on world politics and culture, including but not limited to: their imperialism, their racism (!), the Dreyfuss affair, the disgusting Ira Einhorn affair, their philosophers, their creation of Aryanism, Operation Torch, Vietnam, the French Revolution, attitudes towards East Germany, socialism, and well, to be frank, hygiene. I'm sure there's more, but those are what come to mind. Also, I think we're arguing the difference between stereotypes and racism. Stereotypes are arguably bad (I just think they're funny), but racism/bigotism (is that a word?) is a different beast altogether.

Last few years? There's good reason to disapprove of how the French have interfered in American affairs since day one. You don't even want to hear what their intellectuals had to say about the American Indians! As for freedom fries, that was utterly lame. Frites are a Belgian invention! Also, I am the first to admit that the best French contributions to the world were the restaurant, Escoffier, and the magic of taking stringy, cheap ingredients and cooking them into something amazing. So that's something they can feel good about!

Admin chillzatl Posted August 3, 2005 Admin Report Share Posted August 3, 2005 there are hundreds of snags that happen in sports, involving contracts and trades and the like. THis is NO DIFFERENT. well, except that we all happen to be fans of the team that the snag happens to involve and half of us are freaking out about it. YOU are saying we don't have our stuff together. But YOU don't really know what the heck is going on, none of us do. You and a few others, just want to assume it's a big deal. But I guess we don't really have much else to talk about anyway right?
