Plainview1981
Quote: I actually meant to reply to Diesel, not you. Thus the confusion. also, it's been bugging me: LeBron (not La) does Wade really pop into your head in terms of 'defense'...doesn't for me (neither does Bron, just saying). LOL. Lots of people have brought that up. I don't know why I call him that... I just do. I guess Labron just rolls off the tongue better for me. No Wade isn't an impact defensive player like a Bruce Bowen, but he is better than Kobe I think.
Traceman
in 3 of the last 6 seasons and a 2nd Team All NBA Defensive player for 2 of those years. He didn't make it last year but he was injured for a significant part of the season. Kobe is a better defender than D Wade at this point but Wade is not a bad defender at all and I could see him being on the ALl NBA Defensive Team if he set his mind to it. Plainview1981
Who votes for Defensive player of the year? The same guys that game PJ Brown an MVP vote? Theo won defensive player of the year, but he was nothing more than a weakside shot blocker. He couldn't defend one on one had other than his weakside shot blocking wasn't all that effective on defense. The awards are nice, but that doesn't really mean he is that good of a defensive player. Admin chillzatl Posted September 2, 2005 Admin Report Share Posted September 2, 2005 it doesn't take very much to see him locking down everyone he guards...
Plainview1981
Kobe's defense seems to be the best againest Michael Redd whom he held to 1-8 shooting and 8 points the second time. But Corey Maggette had 25 againest him....Joe Johnson had 25 http://www.nba.com/games/20041208/PHOLAL/boxscore.html 22 for Jason Richardson http://www.nba.com/games/20041203/GSWLAL/boxscore.html 27 for Maggette the second time http://www.nba.com/games/20041211/LALLAC/boxscore.html 26 for Ray Allen http://www.nba.com/games/20041214/LALSEA/boxscore.html 33 for Larry Hughes http://www.nba.com/games/20041217/WASLAL/boxscore.html 20 for David Wesley (9 points above his average) http://www.nba.com/games/20041222/NOHLAL/boxscore.html 25 for Ray Allen Again http://www.nba.com/games/20050125/SEALAL/boxscore.html Jacque Vaughn had 16 on 6-10 shooting... Mightly big game for a scrub like Vaughan http://www.nba.com/games/20050128/NJNLAL/boxscore.html 30 for Maggette again on 9-11 shooting http://www.nba.com/games/20050308/LACLAL/boxscore.html 30 poitns for Ray Allen http://www.nba.com/games/20050408/LALSEA/boxscore.html 26 for Joe Johnson http://www.nba.com/games/20050411/PHOLAL/boxscore.html Looking through most of the games it looks like Kobe didn't shut down any of the top SG's other than Michael Redd. Allen went 2-8 againest him in one of those games but only played 10 minutes. And if Kobe isn't guarding any of these guys he isn't doing anything worthy of being an all team defensive player either. cyman3
He put GREAT D on Hamilton during the DET/LA finals. He got his points and chased Hamilton all over the court. Kobe made great plays on defense when it counted as well. hes a very good defender. wade is too. but right now, id have to say KOBE. the only reason why Lakers lost is b/c only KOBE + SHAQ decided to play in the FINALS. Payton? nope. Malone? didnt show up. Rest? nobody could score! As for Detroit, while Hamilton struggled to get his points- the rest stepped up! Plainview1981
Rip Hamilton is a good player, but he can be defended. The games I listed don't show great defensive ability. I never said he can't do it, but he hasn't done it lately. The ojective for a good defensive player isn't to just show up every once and a while.... Moderators AHF Posted September 6, 2005 Moderators Report Share Posted September 6, 2005 I hate Kobe and give the credit to Shaq for the championships as he was clearly the biggest factor for those Laker teams because no one could match up with him. Kobe became way overrated when people started mentioning him in the same breath as MJ. That said, he is easily a top 2 SG in terms of what he does on the floor and has a very well-rounded game. He can score, pass, is clutch and is a standout defender. He isn't someone who is good enough to put a team on his back and take them to the playoffs like Shaq or Duncan but he is better all-around than someone like Ray Allen, IMO. Where his value starts to dip farther is that he seems to be a cause of significant discord on his teams both among coaches and other players due to his selfishness. I would rank the SGs for 2005-06: 1. Lebron 2. Kobe 3. T-Mac 4. Wade 5. Ray 6. Vince (if motivated) 7. PP 8. Manu 9. Hughes 10. Richardson (too one dimentional) (This assumes AI and JJ are PGs for 2005-06).
